Statistics on the Filipinos and the conditions
that surround them are collected through household-based
censuses and surveys.

or the year, the Household Statistics
Department (HSD) undertook the
following projects and activities to
generate social, demographic and
economic household-based data.
2000 Census of Population and Housing
(Further Analysis and Release of Data)
The Census was conducted nationwide in
May and June 2000 while this year saw the release
of the results of the population counts based on the
2000 Census. Results of population by barangay
were proclaimed official by President Arroyo on 18
April 2001 (Proclamation No. 28).
Results of the latest census placed the
Philippine population at 76,498,735 persons as of
May 1, 2000.
Population counts by barangays are
available in CD-ROM and can also be accessed at
the NSO website located at
http://www.census.gov.ph. Manuscript for the 2000
Population Enumerated in Various Censuses
Census Report No. 1, which refers to
population by region, province, municipality/city and
barangay, is now final for printing. Technical
preparations such as preparation of table formats
and specifications, estimation procedures,
imputation procedures, and publication plans are
being undertaken. Regional and provincial volumes
in print, electronic copies (CD-ROM), and Public
Use Files (PUFs) will be made available to the NSO
clients by next year.
In response to the advocacy of local
government units to be upgraded to a city or to
create new barangays, the NSO also issued a
certification of population counts. The certification of
population counts is one of the required documents,
as prescribed under the Local Government Code,
for support in upgrading LGUs or creating new ones.
Labor Force Survey (LFS)
The Labor Force Survey is a nationwide
survey of households designed to provide statistics
on levels and trends of employment, unemployment
and underemployment for the country, as a whole,
and for each of the administrative regions, including
provinces and key cities or municipalities.

The country's unemployment rate improved to 9.8 percent in
October 2001 from 10.1 percent in July 2001 and 10.1 in October 2000 as
reported by the NSO.
However, the quarterly report said there were 3.3 million
unemployed people in October, slightly more than the year-ago level of 3.1
million.
