“Sail Away” September 2012

David Stoffels
Well if things weren’t already moving along fast enough in the world of sailing, we definitely now have
the country’s attention after the outstanding results of the sailing at the London Olympics and Para-
Olympics. I am hopeful that this will in turn have a positive effect on our membership numbers for the
coming season. With new members already joining we need to make sure that we keep an eye out for
new members and visitors, making them feel welcome. Along with this, we need to ensure that all
visitors sign in and are shown around the club.
What a Father’s Day and what a kick-off to the season of 2012-13. Some said it was one of the best kick
-off days we have had for years, as the lake was full, the sun was out and club house and grounds are
something else.
I would like to thank all the masses of people who have given their time and dedication over the past
winter in helping transform the look of the club house and its grounds. I think that you would agree we
all need to take our hats off to these people as there are too many people to name.
Once again, I would like to ask for help to assist me at the Wodonga Children’s fair at the Wodonga
Racecourse on 14 October 2012. We will have a wonderful display of yachts of all sizes and need
around 25 people to assist throughout the day. If you are available to help us out for an hour or two.
Those who assist will be able to claim average points for missed races just as duty personnel do. There
is a variety of jobs and tasks to be carried out on this day. Please drop me an email to
awyc.commodore@gmail.com
Don’t forget we have a packed full calendar this year and if you can be involved in any way don’t be
afraid to help and be a part of what, I think, will a memorable season.
The 725 Regatta & NX25 Country championships was very successful with four visiting trailables
adding to a good sized fleet which I hear also caused some fun on the water. Don’t forget to have a
look on the club website for some wonderful photos of this event.
Noteworthy things to remember this month and next month are First Aid Course 15-16 th September,
the first of our Tackers programs during the first week of the school holidays 24-28 th September,
International Canoe National Championships 29-30 th September and 1 st of October, Sailability 13 th
October @ 1pm last but not least, Ronstan Sail Inland series 20-21 st October.
With the coming of October, we also will see the return of the Wednesday evening sailing/socialising,
kicking off on Wednesday 3 October 2012 and running fortnightly. Bring your family and friends for a
night of fun. This has been proven to be a lot of fun thanks to John Landon of course as this was his
initiative two years ago. Let’s hope it will be just much fun this year.
We need to bring to everyone’s attention that with the changes to our bar facilities some changes have
been made. When the bar is open there is no BYO to be consumed on the club grounds. However
when the bar is closed BYO can be consumed on the grassed areas.
I would like everyone to know that we as a club now have the privilege of having Sandringham Yacht
Club taking our club under its wing in a mentoring program. This is a major advantage to us as we will
be able to use their knowledge and Intel to help the committee to ensure that we head in the correct
direction with our constant growth. Please don’t be afraid to talk to a committee member for any
clarification if you have any concerns.
An invitation has been extended to AWYC members to help celebrate the official opening of the Sandy
Creek Inlet Bridge on Saturday 20 th October at 11.30am. Why not sail down and help in the celebration
of the reopening of the old trestle bridge over the lake, your presence on the water will add to the gala
atmosphere.
An important date for your diary: 28 October 2012 is our annual AWYC Discover Sailing Open Day from
12pm. This event is being widely advertised and it would be wonderful to have as many boats on the
water as possible and members in attendance to assist visitors on the day. Whether it is cooking the
barbecue, signing up registration forms, fitting lifejackets, sailing yachts or making a new friend, please
come along and help promote your club.
I am missing the following items from previous working bees – wire strainer, sledge hammer, crowbar,
plane and metal rake. Paul Ransley is missing a folding ladder from the shed. These items may have
been taken home by mistake. If you have them, please return these items ASAP.
Happy Sailing
Hi All
The 2012/2013 sailing season has commenced.
Safety
(from our Safety Officer)
Safety can be such a dry topic but there are a couple of items I would like all of you to take the time to
think about and if applicable to do.
If you’re intending to compete in any racing events, you need to complete a Safety Compliance
Declaration form.
The Declaration forms are at the club (on the bench), or follow the link below and print one off. There
is a check list helping you with what is required for each category. The bigger the number, the lower
the category type.
AWYC Sunday races are Cat 7.
If you’re thinking of competing in some away-events you may need to go to Cat 5, or Cat 5n for night
racing.
Please give all completed forms to me and when I’m satisfied with them the club will order in the
stickers.
There is also a declaration and checklist for Off-the-Beach boats. Members should note that the OTB
declaration requires the signature of a person in charge where the boat owner is less than 18 years of
age.
If there is anything you are unsure of, talk to me and if I don’t know I will find out.
http://www.yachtingvictoria.com.au/?Page=18590&MenuID=Sailing_%40_Boating%2F21673%2F0%
2F%2CSafety%2F13251%2F0%2F
Duty crews.
Please set a couple of the crew around the shed door when moving the tractor and the boats to watch
for any pedestrians.
Off-the-beach crews
With the water so cold in the early months of the season, wet suits are a great idea.
Hypothermia will set in even though you are out of the water from the chill factor of the wind.
But most of all, have fun whether you are cruising or racing, and be safe.
Colin Hobbs
27 Meg Radio Phased Out at AWYC
Category 6: (Short races close to shore in relatively warm or protected waters, normally
held in daylight) will now include mobile telephones and/or club preferred VHF radio as a
required radio in the new YA Special regulations to be introduced in 2013.
AWYC has purchased VHF radios and the VHF antenna was installed at the
working bee on August 5, so TY sailors should be acquiring VHF radios.
AWYC will use channel 73
A word from our resident First Aider, Helen Kerr
HYPOTHERMIA
The human body normally works within a fairly limited temperature range. There are various
mechanism that will start up if the body gets too hot or too cold. The body has several ways of
warming itself if its normal temperature of about 37 degrees starts to fall. I am sure you are familiar
with these defence mechanisms; shivering being the most obvious. We shiver in an effort to maintain
our core (inside) temperature. When we shiver our muscles quiver, this movement generates heat
inside our bodies thus maintaining our internal temperature. We also have the urge to move around
when cold, once again using our muscles and generating internal heat.
Water is a very good conductor so anyone who gets wet, either through being immersed or just
getting wet through in the rain, will lose heat from their body very quickly. If there is wind associated
with either of these incidents then heat loss will be even more rapid. The body’s defence mechanisms
will find it difficult to overcome this loss of internal heat so hypothermia sets in.
When would you worry about Hypothermia?
Hypothermia can occur at any time. It does not necessarily have to occur in the middle of winter,
although it is more likely to occur when water temperature is cold, winds are cold and the ambient
temperature is also low. However, if someone is wet and there is wind, even wind generated by your
movement over the water as you are sailing, hypothermia should be considered and avoided.
What does the hypothermic person look like?
The person:
Complains of feeling cold.
Will be shaking and shivering, although in severe cases shivering will cease.
May look pale.
May have difficulty with coordination or may be slow to react, for example when tacking
or performing other tasks on the vessel.
May be unable to make a considered decision.
May become irritable.
May progressively become quieter and less responsive.
Lapse into unconsciousness.
Treating Hypothermia
The aim of treating hypothermia is to stop the temperature dropping any further and to bring it back
to normal. This needs to be achieved slowly.
The first and most important thing to do is get the person out of the water/rain and wind and into a
sheltered environment.
Get the person into the warmest spot on board.
With smaller boats get to shore and get the person into a sheltered environment for example
the clubhouse or boat shed. Warm up the environment if you can.
Get the person out of their wet clothes, pat their skin dry (don’t rub the skin) and into
something warm and dry. Help them do this if they are unable to. Cut clothes off if
necessary.
If on board, put the person into a sleeping bag or wrap in a blanket. If these things are not
available, cover the person with what you can and remember close body contact can help
with rewarming, so cuddle up to the person.
Generate heat in the cabin if you can. Even turning on the galley stove burners can help.
Make sure draughts are avoided as far as possible by ensuring hatches are secure and the
companionway is closed.
Give the person WARM drinks if they are conscious.
“Sail Away” September 2012

If the person is unconscious do all of the above except giving fluids. Stay with the person.
Keep the person on their side and keep a very close eye on their breathing. It may be
necessary to do CPR if the person stops breathing.
If the person is unconscious help should be obtained as soon as possible. Either send a
MAYDAY call for assistance or arrange to have an ambulance awaiting arrival if a short
distance from the nearest help. Consider use of engine rather than sail if this would be
quicker.
How can you avoid hypothermia spoiling your sailing experience?
Be aware of the possibility of hypothermia occurring and know what to do about it.
All crew members should keep a close eye on each other and act if they suspect the onset of
hypothermia.
Ensure people are safety conscious in rough weather, taking care when moving around the
vessel and that they are using their harness properly.
Make sure you and your crew dress appropriately and have, and use, adequate wet weather
gear.
Ensure crew have regular time out of the elements .
If you anticipate inclement weather, consider filling thermos flasks with warm drinks before

you meet it.
Carry a couple of space blankets. They are inexpensive, readily available at the chemist and
very small. They are great in these circumstances.
Helen Kerr
(Editor: Helen is leading a First Aid course on Sept 15-16. the registrations closed on Wednesday
September 12. There should be more opportunities in the future.)
Terry Caldwell
Hi folks
Club Calendar for 2012-2013
The current draft of the 2012-2013 calendar is at the back of this newsletter. Since the last newsletter,
several changes have been made for courses and training. The Noelex Nationals (at GLYC) have also
been added to March 2-3 and the Victorian TY Championships (also at GLYC) are on March 23-24. The
TY Traveller Series are included.
RL24 Championships—Premium on Boat Parking and Camping sites Jan 5-12, 2013
We are expecting over twenty RL24s for their National Championships in January. These sailors tend
not to sleep in their TYs. I have already had requests for ten powered sites for that week. Please plan
your camping at the club to be in other weeks during the kids’ Christmas vacation. Also, if a few TYs
were to be off the grounds (at Gippsland Lakes or at home before returning to the club etc), this would
ease the pressure on the boat parking during the championships.
First Mini-Regatta already
On Father’s Day, we held the “Give Dads a Sail” regatta. It was a chance to iron out a few bugs with
the course-laying and the results software as well as check on sailing boats and equipment. We
managed two races before the wind dropped out. There were five OTB boats (Div 1), four TYs (Div 2)
and two Juniors in Optis (Div 3). The top three were Wes Ward (The Grey Ghost), Hayden Virtue
(Acrobat) and Stuart Richardson (Runny Babbit).
725 Regatta and Nx25 Country Championships
AWYC hosted a successful 725 regatta on the weekend of September 8-9. There were eleven boats
involving thirty-six sailors. The duty crew did a terrific job of ensuring that all five scheduled heats were
sailed, especially with the three Sunday heats being in testing light conditions. The galley crew provided
great meals with the pizza oven put to good use. The visiting boats were a strong contingent, filling
three of the top four places. For top photos from Max (Sailing boats, pizza preparation and even the
start boat), go to the website and click on 12-13 in the Photos drop-down menu.
Results for the 725 Regatta
Results for the Noelex 25 Country Championships
1. Dark Knight, Toby Leppin (Newhaven) 1. Leewana, Glenn Collings (Mount Martha)
2. Leewana, Glenn Collings (Mount Martha) 2. Pisces, Terry Caldwell (AWYC)
3. Pisces, Terry Caldwell (AWYC) 3. Cocktail, Rob Rainsford (Mornington)
Sailing Instructions and updates
Please download these from the AWYC website. There will be also be a hard copy at the sign-on bench.
The lasts version is the September 3 version. This version clarifies a couple of issue that arose on the
first weekend, including the expectation that there will not be shortened course for the average lap
time racing that we are conducting for the AWYC series.
Entry Forms for AWYC Club Racing
A few entry forms have been submitted to Daryl and me, but there are many more to come. Please
note that a separate form is required for each skipper/boat combination as the handicaps will be
different for each and the entry details are used in the new results software. Forms are available on the
website (click on Racing from the Activities drop-down menu) or from the sign-on bench.
Thanks
Thanks to Daryl Stone who has set up new software for results and these will be published on the
website as well as emailed (if requested on the entry form). Daryl has also assisted with the preparation
of the AWYC Sailing Instructions. Daryl is the webmaster and would appreciate feedback and
requests—via awyc.webmaster@gmail.com
Thanks to Erwin Bejsta who has prepared course diagrams and course-laying diagrams including
pictures of our marks/buoys to make it easier for sailors and duty personnel. Also thanks to Erwin for
getting the new buoys.
Thanks to Oliver Entrop who will be a “go to” person for maintenance of club boats.
Cruising Interest?
Paul Ransley has informed me that a couple of members intend to "discover" the newly rebuilt rail
bridge and possibly staying overnight behind Robinson's Island, on the weekend of October 6-7,
weather permitting. Any more takers? I believe that this is the rail trail that we have been asked to
have a few boats do a sail-past for the official opening on October 20 (for boats not going to
Yarrawonga for a Sail Inland meet).
Duty Roster
For a full 2012-2013 season, it is expected that members will be on duty twice. We will have to have
more rescue craft on the water with increased junior participation. If you have specific requests or wish
to inform me that you are unavailable for certain periods, contact me on 0400533741 or
awyc.vice.commodore@gmail.com Thanks to everybody for willingly attending their duty weekends
during the 2011-2012 season.
The first person on the list is the Principal Duty Officer. It is the responsibility of the nominated
Committee Rep to ensure that there will be enough duty personnel in attendance. Not all are required
for Saturday – just one or two to ensure all is ready. After the Sunday sailing, everything is to be made
ready for the next weekend. When names are in [ ] these people will still sail, but take on the duties
listed.
Becoming accredited through YV courses.
If you have thought about becoming a club race officer, instructor or coach or would like to consolidate
your practical experience with a recognised qualification, check out the YV calendar for courses.
It would be great to have more accredited race officers in the club, especially if there is a demand for
AWYC to host championships for various classes.
Assistant Instructors should keep an eye out for opportunities to complete the Instructor course. . The
First Aid course on September 15-16 will assist in the this process (see flyer in this newsletter)
Rescue crew
We are very keen to hear from anyone who might be available as a regular crew for a rescue boat and
Stuart Richardson
The August committee meeting included a business planning session where we reviewed our current and future
initiatives and objectives. Over the next few months, a business plan outlining the objectives and performance
measures of the committee will be developed and provided for comment.
Business Plan
The key outcome of the Business Planning Session is the need for us to consolidate some of the key initiatives
introduced over the past year and to continue to build our membership base. Over this season, as well as the
usual activities, you will see more focus on:

The roll-out of the YA Discover Sailing Program with further development of our training program,
inclusion of Participation Programs and introduction of Discover Sailing Hosts. You will also notice
Engagement of more members in the administration and management of the club through the subcommittees.
The House and Strategic Planning sub-committees are up and running and delivering very
good results. If you are interested in being involved contact me.
Consolidation of the member development program. You will have seen some of the fantastic work
Donald has been doing with training programs. Watch this space; there is lots more to follow.
Clarification of roles and responsibilities for all committee members. Clear position descriptions will be
developed and published on our website to assist members in understanding what the responsibilities
and accountabilities of each committee position are.
Development of performance measures for the club’s activities so we can assess if we are achieving
the right outcomes for the club and its members.
Probably the most significant initiative is the development of the club’s strategic plan. This plan will
outline the way forward for the club and provide a platform for us to obtain funding to improve the
club facilities. The strategic planning sub-committee will be arranging consultation sessions to obtain
input and feedback from members on the future direction of the club and the requirements for our
facilities.
2012-13 memberships
You will have received your 2012-13 membership renewal invoices by now. Thanks to everyone who has paid
already. Also thanks to all those who have contacted me with feedback or to correct errors in their invoice and
membership details. There is a lot of work getting the information correct but it will make the administration of
the club much easier in future years.
If you have any queries or issues with your membership invoice or personal details please contact me at
awyc.secretary@gmail.com or on 0409 386 516.
MySailor
AWYC Liquor Licence is changing
All members are asked to take care to comply with our liquor licence.

When the galley bar is selling drinks, there are to be no BYO drinks.
BYO drinks are permitted when the galley bar is closed.
Take-away drink sales are permitted as part of the licence.
All non-member visitors over the age of 18 years are to sign in using the Visitors
Book which resides on the sign-on bench.
Quite simple rules but consequences of ignoring them could be dire.
The changes are to protect the club’s interest with regard to compliance and to ensure
that the club is able to exercise its duty of care.
“Sail Away” September 2012

Hello all juniors!
Laura Thomson
So much is happening now the season has started! You can just tell by looking at the newly painted
clubhouse that AWYC is growing as a bigger and better club. With so many more people around, it is
shaping up to be a great season.
There will be so many great Learn To Sail courses on both before and after Christmas. There will be a
Tackers 3 run in the September school holidays and in November there will be a lot on. On Saturday
mornings there will be Tackers 2, Start Sailing, Better Sailing and Start Racing. There will be a Tackers 3
run on a Saturday afternoon and on a Sunday afternoon there will be a Tackers 1. All these course are
on the AWYC website, so take a look, register and pay online using the links.
On September 15-16, Olivia, Lily and Matilda Richardson will be going down to Black Rock to sail in a
Girls-Only Opti training camp. Hopefully, the girls will have a small report on their experiences in the
next Junior Report. They are sure to have lots of fun and learn heaps!
On September 29 October 1, I will be going to the NSW Youth titles at the Belmont Sailing Club on Lake
Macquarie. I’m hoping to learn lots and gain more experience in Laser fleets. One of the great things is
it is being run on and off the water by Hayley Outteridge, the sister of our Olympic gold medallist for
the 49ers, Nathan!
The Lake is full and Spring is here. So, too, is the start of the sailing season. Our Discover Sailing Centre has been
busy scheduling our regular courses as well as investigating Club Member Development courses to offer.
The first of these Member Development courses is a Red Cross ‘Apply First Aid’ HLTFA301C (previously known
as Senior First Aid) which will be held at AWYC on September 15-16 (two day course). You will gain the skills and
knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualties, the incident and other
first aiders, in a range of situations including in the home, workplace or within the community, until the arrival
of medical or other assistance. You need to register online and this can be done through the AWYC website
www.awyc.yachting.org.au For those who currently hold a certificate but are due for a refresher we will be
holding one of those courses in the new year.
With the change over to a Discover Sailing Centre (rather than a YATC) there have been some changes in
terminology, mainly the names of courses. Be assured the courses are the same (same syllabus) just a new
name. Tackers remains unchanged but GISBS is gone. It is now called Discover Sailing – Dinghy Program.
Within the Dinghy Program the course names are not that different but will now be know as: Start Sailing 1,
Start Sailing 2 (we will offer 1&2 as a Start Sailing Package), Better Sailing,, Start Racing, & Better Racing.
All the pre-Christmas courses are now open for registration. This season all enrolments
will be online. We also have the facility for credit card payments with this online system.
If you choose to pay by cheque or cash your money needs to be received prior to the
closing date of the course registrations. To register for a course go to the AWYC website
and use the training link or scan this QR code (at right).
Stuart Richardson, Leanne and I attended the annual Yachting Victoria Instructor
conference at the Albert Sailing Club in Melbourne. This was very informative regarding
the changes with Discover Sailing and changes to re-accreditation for Instructors.
A huge thanks to Daryl Stone who has been busy updating the AWYC website. The training link on this site now
has a wealth of information, including videos and is a great resource. The available courses are all listed together
with links to the registration page for each.
In the next couple of months, we have our Training Centre Audit to complete. We will be hosting Gavin Wall
(Yachting Victoria Discover Sailing manager) for the weekend of our Discover Sailing Day. Gavin will be bringing a
new marquee and promotional material for the promotion of the day and on the Saturday afternoon we will
host an information session and BBQ/Pizza evening for all members to explain all the exciting changes that are
happening in the way our sport is presented to the public.
Our plans are starting to come together, our courses are open for bookings and our new facilities and boats are
nearly ready. We have a very busy few months ahead of us.
Leanne Thomson
After the Gold rush of Olympic Sailing medals, followed by the great start by our sailors in the
Paralympics, it is hard not to be excited about sailing at the moment. For those wanting to continue on
that high, the website for the Paralympics sailing is www.london2012.com/paralympics/sailing or check
out the updates posted on our facebook page www.facebook.com/sailabilityAW
Over the winter months, we have all been very busy behind the scenes in preparation for a bumper
season. AWYC had four representatives at the annual Yachting Victoria Conference. This year’s
conference saw Sailability feature highly and our team sat in on several of the presentations, with
Donald Thomson even co-presenting in one about Sailability Pathways and Training. He also attended
the Sailability Victoria AGM in one of his last roles as Coordinator.
Yachting Australia have re-branded away from "Go Sailing" to "Discover Sailing". Sailability has been
included under this Discover Sailing banner and features in its marketing. The Discover Sailing website
includes heaps of information and a great video about Sailability. http://www.discoversailing.org.au/
Access Sailing Systems have advised our new Access 303 is expected to leave the UK on September 7,
so allowing for three weeks to get here it will be the end of September when it arrives in Nowra, before
making its way to Albury. When we have the boat here, we will arrange a Christening event with the
media invited. The more people we can get to attend this event the better, so keep an eye out for an
update.
Sailability now has a new phone number 0459 754 841.This has come about in an attempt to separate
the Training phone and the Sailability phone (so that a phone may be handed over to an individual of
each sub-committee).
As mentioned last month, Simon Brown and Rob Newman have agreed to join the Sailability subcommittee
that is currently being formed. Donald will be on this sub-committee and Cathy Richardson
has joined as well. This sub-committee’s role will be in the planning and organising of the Sailability
program. We will still rely heavily on volunteers helping out at our “Sailing For Everyone” Sessions. For
compliance, we really need to keep a register of our program’s volunteers. If you currently volunteer
could you please forward a copy to me (scanned via email is fine) of your Working With Children’s
(WWC) card and powerboat licence (if you have one). Application forms for WWC are available at the
Club or email me and I will send you one.
Dates for this years program are listed at right and there is a
copy of the flyer included in this newsletter. Please make note
of these dates and consider offering a few hours of your day to
bring a smile to someone’s face.
