As the leaves begin to change colour, so comes to an end a fantastic sailing season, during which,
undoubtedly, you would agree so much has been achieved around the club in such a short space of
time.
I would like to congratulate you all on the efforts put in by everyone.
Congratulations to Kaye Harris for taking out our final members’ draw on social sailing Wednesday
night. Kaye’s name was about the tenth drawn from the hat with most of our regular attendees names
drawn but alas they were not there to collect the cash.
This month has seen the end to a very busy year of sail training. The training has far exceeded
everyone’s expectations and would not have been possible to facilitate without the help of all our
enthusiastic volunteers.
Congratulations to Sailability on another successful season. This month saw Simon Brown take part in
the Access Championships – our thanks to Simon for representing the club. We look forward to
Sailability recommencing in mid October 2012.
This month we welcomed back the King Valley School Cluster. These small rural schools enjoyed three
days of camping at the club. It was nice to see the school and members socialising on our final
members night. It was great to have some of the students making a personal thankyou to the club
members present. This notice was left behind on the whiteboard as a thankyou -
I have been told that the competition was fierce for the final round of the Summer Sailing series. I
snapped a photo of Lee Geraghty (see next page) taking the opportunity for some last minute touching
up on the Laser handling skills. Hope it helped…..
See you at the presentation evening when the winners will be announced.
The club was a hive of activity over the Easter long weekend with the camp ground full and it was
wonderful to see so many visitors both young and old.
The 14” Skiff guys enjoyed the perfect sailing conditions and revisiting the club with their families and
friends. All are keen to return again next season.
I believe that even the Easter Bunny dropped by for the many kids camping out at the club.
Don’t forget the End of Season Presentation dinner on Friday 11 May at The Commercial Club Albury,
kicking off from 6.30pm. This evening is one not to miss so please forward your RSVP to John Pimm.
Hi folks
Club Calendar for 2012-2013 and comments
The current draft of the 2012-2013 calendar is at the back of this newsletter.
The training and sailability dates are just my guess at the moment with the organisers of those activities
to confirm dates.
The Open Day (or “Go Sailing” Day) will be held earlier so that visitors will have the opportunity to sign
up for training programs which will probably get under way early in November.
The National Championships for the International Canoes will be hosted by AWYC, September 30 –
October 1 (NSW Labour Day weekend). The RL24 Australian Championship will be hosted by AWYC
from January 6 to January 11, 2013. There is a chance of a National Championships for some catamaran
classes from December 29 2012 to January 4 2013. The 14 footer group who were here over Easter are
keen to be back with a lot more boats next Easter. Some TY sailors at the National TY and Sportsboat
Championships in Tasmania over Easter have indicated that they will lobby for the next ones to be at
AWYC. Could be a busy year for the vice-commodore, race officers and volunteer race committees!
The popular mini-regattas for junior, novice and lady helming look set to stay. There are not any night
races scheduled, but the Full Moon dates are on the calendar so that anybody, who is keen to have a
night sail, can plan ahead. The fortnightly social gathering, which sometimes includes sailing, is to
continue, probably still with the members draw.
Paul Ransley reports on the TY Nationals in Tasmania over Easter
The series started with a passage race of 20 nautical miles in a light noreaster, around 10 to 12 knots. A
good fleet of three divisions, our division was 3 E5.9's, 2 C650s, 3 TS16s, an 18 & a 21, and a spinnaker
start. The last leg was a beat to finish and the wind died from the north and swung to southeasterly,
very Lake Hume. We managed to stay in the northerly flow out of the tide then caught the seabreeze
and finished 2nd across the line and 1st on handicap, the TS16s struggling as the breeze died.
Day 2 and the wind was variable from the west/norwest at 5 to 25 knots. Unfortunately, the W/L course
was hard to set and ended up being two shy reaches which suited the Hartleys, we struggled for a 4th
and two 5ths.
Day 3 was very windy, gusts to 35 knots and sustained above 25. There were three or four capsizes in
the Sportsboats, a broken mast, shredded spinnakers and broken rudders. We sat at anchor alongside
the Bellerive oval and listened to the footy!
Day 4 was more of the same. In the first race we noticed the rig was losing tension, so retired, found we
had a broken spreader. A very interesting nats, to say the least.
For some good photos of the carnage and even a good shot of Hawky working hard, check out http://
JA is now in cruising mode and heading off to Norfolk Bay, think I'll need the thermals though.
Youth and Junior Regatta
Several of our younger sailors are off to Sorrento this weekend ( April 14-15) for a Victorian Youth and
Junior Regatta. We wish them all the best.
Noelex Nationals
It appears that least four AWYC Nx25s will participate in the Noelex Nationals at Safety Beach on May 5
and 6. We are hoping for an improvement on last year’s results.
Duty Roster
For a full 2012-2013 season, it is expected that members will be on duty twice. We will have to have
more rescue craft on the water with increased junior participation. If you have specific requests or wish
to inform me that you are unavailable for certain periods, contact me on 0400533741 or
awyc.vice.commodore@gmail.com Thanks to everybody for willingly attending their duty weekends
during the 2011-2012 season.
New Members
Membership applications have been received from:
Kevin Shanahan (previously Bendigo YC) - no boat at the moment and very keen to crew on TYs.
Richard Foreman & family (wife Helen and kids Daisy and Annie) - previously sailed yachts in
Townsville.
Clinton Lee - recently acquired an A Class
Want to be a crew?
If there are members out there who are looking for boats to crew on, make sure you put your name
forward in the next newsletter. If other people are interested, put them in touch. Contact me on
0400533741 or awyc.vice.commodore@gmail.com
Becoming accredited through YV courses.
If you have thought about becoming a club race officer, instructor or coach or would like to consolidate
your practical experience with a recognised qualification, check out the YV calendar for courses.
It would be great to more accredited race officers in the club, especially if there is a demand for AWYC
to host championships for various classes.
Assistant Instructors should keep an eye out for opportunities to complete the Instructor course.
Perhaps YV will hold some of these courses at AWYC, with the possibility of the assistant instructors
only needing to complete an upgrade instead of a complete instructors course..
Rescue crew
We are very keen to hear from anyone who might be available as a regular crew for a rescue boat and
back-up starter. Maybe there’s someone who would like to volunteer.
Winter Series—on water and on land! (dates on next page)
Greg Oakes (NEW—North East Windsports) has contacted me about planning for a winter series (Harry
Jakobs series again) on Lake Hume that ties in with NEW’s Blokarting activities at Wangaratta Airport
for May to August. All members are encouraged to participate both . The start time for sailing is set at
8.00am but boats start at all sorts of times and record their own elapsed time, as long as they round
the laid marker buoy by Noon. The first Blokart event clashes with the Noelex Championships, but NEW
has also invited people from Melbourne for that day. Greg participated in our last series with his big
“Sail Away” April 2012
catamaran, Mariah, and is very keen to sail again and to give us the opportunity to try NEW’s blokarts.
May 5 Blokarting at 11.00am; May 19 Sailing at 8.00am
June 2 Blokarting at 11.00am; June 16 Sailing at 8.00am ; June 30 Blokarting at 11.00am
July 7 Blokarting at 11.00am; July 21 Sailing at 8.00am
Aug 4 Blokarting at 11.00am; Aug 18 Sailing at 8.00am
I’m looking forward to trying the Blokarts and hope that a few of you will join me.
Cheers
Our constitution and bylaws
Over the past few weeks, for a range of reasons, I’ve had the joy of reading our club constitution and
bylaws. I must say while it is not an exciting read it is certainly worthwhile. The constitution and bylaws
are the foundation of our club and clearly spell out the rules and structure for the successful running of
the club. The documents are available from our website under the ‘about the club/policies and
procedures’ link. I recommend all members familiarise themselves with the constitution and bylaws to
gain a better understanding of how the club is run.
Nominate for committee
A club such as ours is only as successful as the contributions the members make. We are blessed to have
“Sail Away” April 2012
such a proactive and enthusiastic membership base with an extensive range of skills and expertise.
You will have seen in the past newsletter that all positions on the Club Management Committee are up
for re-election. If you are interested in filling any of the positions on the committee please contact me
on 0409 386 516 and I’ll provide you with some background information. The constitution explains the
roles and responsibilities of the committee members. Being a committee member is not difficult or
time consuming; it just takes some interest and a willingness to contribute.
The final Sailability day was held on March 24. Leanne and I were busy with the final training day
activities, with Leanne completing a Tackers 2 the same time as the Sailability session. A huge thanks to
Cathy Richardson who stepped in to the administration role for the afternoon. Cathy has helped us out
on several occasions this season due to unavoidable conflicts in programs.
Numbers were down for this session as the weather was a bit cold and bleak. Still it was good to
continue with the day as many of the participants were disappointed they missed out at the start of
the month when we had to cancel due to the weather being “feral”. The lower numbers meant that
those who attended got a longer sail!
Congratulations to Simon Brown on his efforts at the Victorian Access State Titles at Lake Lysterfield.
Simon learnt heaps from the event and managed to get a second place in one race. For the races
where he didn't do well, he realised why and that is an important step in improving skills. Hopefully, we
will see Simon in some more races at a Club level next season.
'Forever Young' will be holding their Charity Dinner on Saturday, April 21. The event was originally
invitation only, but has been opened up to those involved with the Albury Wodonga Yacht Club and
Sailability - with a later RSVP than the flyer! There are more details on the enclosed flyer. All the money
raised goes to Sailability Albury Wodonga to buy a new Access 303. We have arranged with Access
Sailing to have a 303 on loan to be set up on the evening for everyone to see where their money is
going. I will keep everyone updated how the fundraising event goes. It would be great to get a crowd
together for any media releases in relation to the handing over of a large cheque or boat.
The end of a long training season has allowed instructors, assistant instructors and participants to
reflect on the growth and development of the club with an injection of new faces and a wealth of
different skills.
With the completion of a number of courses in the last month it is important to again thank all the
wonderful volunteers who assisted over the season.
The training program has been a massive boost to the club this year as a source of getting new faces
around the club but also ensuring that we are promoting the sport and the positive culture Albury
Wodonga Yacht Club has to offer.
As a Tackers leader I would like to congratulate all the participants in successfully completing their
courses.
As we draw the season to a close, we would extend an invitation for all participants of the training
programs run this year and new members to join us at the end of year function. This is a great place to
socialise with older members of the club.
The training schedule is also gearing up for next year, keep a close eye on the newsletter for further
information or contact any of the instructors for dates of the courses.
Thanks to everyone again for their support of the club and the training program.
An interesting article submitted by Phil Clements.
Laura Thomson
Hello everybody
It was sad to see the season go so quickly, but I am sure we have all had lots of fun competing and
learning to sail out on a full lake.
Congratulations to our Tackers and Teens who have completed their learn to sail courses successfully.
It has been a busy year and the Tackers photo board shows this best. Hopefully we will see you all out
on the water next season.
Our last event for this season was a Junior / Novice / Ladies helm mini regatta. The wind only allowed
us to get 1 race in. It was great to see that 1st and 2nd were the two Optis (Simon 1st & Matilda 2nd)
with Sinead on a Laser 4.7 coming 3rd. Shows just how competitive these small boats are and how
quick the little guys are learning.
On Saturday March 31 I attended a Laser Youth Training Clinic with Gabrielle King at the Woollahra
Yacht Club on Sydney Harbour. Gabrielle King is a Laser Radial sailor and member of the Australian
Sailing Team. She is the 2007/8 Youth World Champion. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome prevented her
competing at ISAF 2011 in Perth. She has won titles at Regional, State, National and Junior
International level, including two times as Laser Radial ISAF Youth World Champion. I spent the day
with five other sailors, all under 19 who sailed their 4.7s, radials and a full rig. We were coached in boat
handling, sail trim, starting and tactics. I learnt heaps and it was tiring because I was the youngest of
the group.
Best of luck to all the juniors going to the Victorian Youth Championships at Sorrento on 14th and 15th
April. For those going I am sure I will see you there. I will update everyone in the next newsletter on
how we all go.
I will be counting all the collect-a-caps over the Easter
break, so please make sure you send them out before
Easter Monday or drop them in to Mum and Dad's work
at Thomson's Graphipress, 409 Kiewa St, Albury.
Don't forget that the presentation/end of season
function is on Friday 11th May at the Commercial Club. I
look forward to seeing you all dressed in your best for
this once a year function (no wetsuits allowed).
