Shed progress update
The initial intention was to construct the shed on a dirt floor, ready to be concreted in the next year or
two. However, the decision was made to concrete the lot before the shed is erected and thereby save
money and time and end up with an excellent asset from day one.
The shed kit has arrived, the site has been levelled and foundation holes have been drilled. The next
step is to get sand, cover it with plastic, put the reinforcement mesh into place and then pour the concrete.
Once the concrete is cured retaining walls will be erected and then the shed will be constructed.
Installation of a switchboard and lights will take place and then we can have big party!
Members can expect a call to arms (tools) to help with the major tasks such as concreting and shed
construction.
“Sail Away” January/February 2013
Jeff Stirling
It is hard to believe that January has come and gone, and we are well into the second half of our sailing
season.
We have enjoyed good water levels at Lake Hume for sailing activity and for enjoying the view from the
clubhouse. The tide is well and truly on the way out at present with the lake at 60 something per cent,
but the place still looks fantastic and there is oodles of water for great sailing and socialising.
January has seen the club being used extensively following a very enjoyable night for New Year’s Eve.
Numbers were down on last year, but with organisation earlier and more promotion I believe we can
host a very successful function next year.
Special thanks to the club juniors for stepping out of their comfort zone in putting on an excellent
concert for us! Congratulations – you really added to the fun of the night.
January saw the club host the RL24 National Titles with our guests prolific in their enthusiastic
feedback. There was good racing and good socialising occurring all week.
The club has been the used for various groups for private functions, as well as Sailing for Everyone and
a very busy training program with positive feedback on all fronts. Thanks to all the volunteers
contributing in all sorts of ways to make the club an enjoyable place for members and guests.
If you are a member who has not been out to the club in a while, come out and have a look. We have a
wonderful spot with shady, green lawns, a first rate café operating, good water quality and plenty of
room for you and your guests.
Training has commenced for use of the Defibrillator kindly donated by the Wodonga Apex Club. A great
opportunity to gain valuable skills – please see elsewhere for dates and times. Thank you to Terry and
Helen Kerr for their time and expertise with this training.
The club has had a successful half-year on the financial front due, of course, to the unrelenting work
being done by the training crew, the café crew, the on-water race management crew, the grounds
maintenance crew, the general helpers crew, and the members and guests supporting the various
initiatives and activities being undertaken.
The aim at the start of the year was to rebuild some financial reserves following last year’s heavy
investment in training assets and café facilities. We are in a position now to fully pay for the new boat
storage shed about to be constructed; to continue to improve club facilities in other areas; to build
reserves for next season; and to grow the club for the enjoyment of members and guests.
Completion of the shed is now a priority to free up the currently used area for other storage and to
improve safety in moving club boats around the club.
Please do not hesitate to have a chat to myself or other committee members about your views on the
club and the way in which we can continue to improve!
Cheers
Jeff Stirling
Thanks from visitor, Roderick Smith, Wooden Boat Assoc.
Thanks to all of the committee who helped, and all of the friendly members who made us welcome. Geoff
and I had a great holiday cruise, and a happy New Year (the singer had a wonderful voice, and the band
could entertain without blasting).
The launching and retrieval were easy; it was great to have the use of the jetty.
The scenery was wonderful; we also got to see points of other transport interest (Wymah punt, the former
railway bridges up the Mitta Mitta arm).
It is always good to see the club in action on a range of fronts: the technically-interesting careening of
Pelican, and the youth members in their Optimists (and larger) in training sessions. Last year, I admired the
work of the club on the sailability program.
I did two short trips for members, and both got me closer to landmarks which I had skipped while coping
with the 'Tallangatta Ghost'.
I am now working on the logistics for my next gap filler: Wellington - Goolwa in February (for Goolwa
Wooden Boat Festival: Google for details). I am very likely to add the Coorong to that one.
With Lake Hume at 1.5-2 m down I could still get under Bethanga bridge, and get over the shallows at 70
km, and hopefully reach Jingellic on flow. That could also be at a time when the north-east is green. The
problem would be if it comes at a time of frosty nights: Jessie II is unheated.
Club Historian Wanted
Albury Wodonga Yacht Club will be 55 years old this year and we are lucky enough to have some of the
founding members still visiting the club on a regular basis. A number of long-term members have collected a
lot of information over this period of time and the committee is now looking for a club historian to become
the custodian of this information and to collate any historical documents we can get our hands on. Although
not essential, it would be great to scan some of this information and store it in digital format for future
access and distribution to interested parties.
As Cliff Swatton pointed out, it is just a question of time before someone will need this information to
compile a club history - maybe for our 60th birthday in 2018
If you, or someone you know has an interest in history and would like to become the club historian, please
let the committee know.
John, Alison, Ilse, Rhena and Sarah
Happy New Year and welcome to 2013 at the Yacht Club. We hope the holiday season has been kind
and relaxing for you.
January has been a fairly busy month in the galley. Firing up the month was the RL National
Championship. Talk about a massive week. We had over 90 people camping on our grounds, all of
whom needed feeding and watering after a busy morning of sailing. The RL crew were a fantastic
bunch of families who did everything they could to support our club. Many games of pool, cricket and
bocce were had, it was really wonderful to see the club being used by all age groups (a few of our club
kids benefited from the odd lesson in pool from the teenage RL sailors!) A big thank-you has to go out
to the galley crew and also Helen (coffee maker extraordinaire) and Richard (our snake chaser) for the
mammoth effort put in by all.
The club has also seen another increase in activity with
our beautiful space being used by a new emerging club.
An open water swimming club (still to be named) is in
the process of forming. They have had a few very
successful swims over the holiday period, bringing more
life (and money) to our club. They will be spending the
rest of the season boosting the numbers of our Friday
social night with a swim kicking off at 6pm each week.
Any Yacht club members are very welcome to join them.
All abilities welcomed and encouraged.
Due to the unforeseen success of our fantastic Yardarm
Café and Bar, we are putting out a call to members to
join the Galley sub-committee. We are looking for more
enthusiastic people to join our crew. If you love our club,
and can spare some time either over the weekend or
week we would love to hear from you. No experience is
needed, just a desire to help this club recover from 10
years of drought. Ilse and myself (Rhena) would like to
hear from you, we will be holding a meeting planning the
last couple of months on Saturday,2nd February at 2pm.
‘Yardarm Café and Bar’ Opening hours
Friday - 5pm till late, Saturday – 12pm till 6pm, Sunday 7:30am till 6pm.
The closing time may be extended on the day to suit guests.
Signing off for now
Resails
Chp/Hcp 2 on Feb 3; Chp/Hcp 4 on Feb 24; and Com/RC5 on Mar 17. These are in the order that the
races would have been sailed. As March 17 is the last day of sailing for the season, there will not be resails
for Chp/Hcp 5 for all divisions and Chp /Hcp 7 for Juniors.
RL24 Championships– Thanks and how the locals fared.
AWYC hosted the RL24 Championships from January 6 to January 11. Thanks to everybody who
volunteered for this week of racing. We had five or six on the committee boats each day. The galley had
a terrific team of workers for long hours with most of the sailors staying on site. Then there was general
help with cleaning up and with the camping area. We managed to get ten races in over five days
despite one day of no wind and another day when racing was called off after a short race as the breeze
was 25-35 knots. The RL24 group were very pleased with AWYC’s race management and hospitality.
The winners were Simon Walsh in the Drop Keel division and Darren Dyer in the Swing Keel division,
both from Lake Wellington Yacht Club. John Hall, who has recently joined AWYC, was third in the Swing
Keel division, sailing Street Car.
Victorian TY championships (in conjunction with Castle and Timpenny State Titles), March 23-24
The Notice of Race for the 2013 Trailable & Sports Boats Championships and Castle & Timpenny State
Titles and Entry Form will be published on the TYD website, trailableyacht.com.au , as well as the
Gippsland Lakes website, http://www.sailglyc.com/ Entry fee is $80 up to March 15, then $100 to
March 23.
Duty Roster
For a full 2012-2013 season, it is expected that members will be on duty twice. We will have to have
more rescue craft on the water with increased junior participation. If you have specific requests or wish
to inform me that you are unavailable for certain periods, contact me on 0400533741 or
awyc.vice.commodore@gmail.com Thanks to everybody for willingly attending their duty weekends so
far, this season.
The first person on the list is the Principal Duty Officer. The Race Officer is identified as RO. It is the
responsibility of the nominated Committee Rep to ensure that there will be enough duty personnel,
including assistance for the galley, in attendance. There is a check-list for duty personnel. After the
Becoming accredited through YA/YV courses.
If you have thought about becoming a club race officer, instructor or coach or would like to consolidate
your practical experience with a recognised qualification, check out the YV calendar for courses.
Please note that Erwin and maybe others will lead half-day course laying sessions to help duty
personnel learn the procedures. Notification of these will be by email.
Assistant Instructors should keep an eye out for opportunities to complete the Instructor course.
Boat Licences
Everybody should make an effort to get a motor boat licence, so they can drive rescue boats and TYs. If
you complete the Powerboat Handling course on Feb 15-17 then take its certificate and a log book to
NSW Roads and Maritime Services or VicRoads, you can get a licence. Lee Geraghty will bring a supply
of log books and these will be left in the training room.
Rescue crew
We are very keen to hear from anyone who might be available as a regular crew for a rescue boat and
back-up starter. Anyone who would like to volunteer
Blokarting - you’re welcome
If you missed the opportunity to join NEW (North East Windsports) for Blokarting at Wangaratta
Well doesn't time fly, and what a summer the club has had, and is still having.
Lee Geraghty
I must congratulate Terry Caldwell on his endeavours with regard to securing the RL regatta it was
certainly a resounding success.
It was certainly interesting to watch how the members from this regatta have maintained a consistent
generation of sailing, with a lot of father and son teams. Some boats were sailed by at least three
generations. All the families and people who attended definitely knew how to have fun and build a
good camaraderie amongst them.
We managed to get some good exposure during this event with PRIME, WIN and the Border Mail giving
us good coverage on three consecutive days.
The RL regatta was also a fantastic opportunity for our club see how our resources (people) stand up
when these events are organised. It must be said that everyone from our club, who got involved, did a
fantastic job.
Let's remember that every person who visits our club is a prospective member. Every person who visits
our club during invitation regattas is maybe someone who provides an opportunity for our club to
grow. Let's make them feel welcome as you never know where it may lead. This is how all of you as
members can promote the club.
With regard to up and coming events. If anyone has something with which they want help to get the
message out amongst the broader community, please let me know.
Well enough of the rant. Happy sailing to everyone, and may happy thoughts fill your mind.
Keep smiling and sailing
Lee Geraghty
Thanks very much to Dean Quinlivan for his ongoing servicing of our grounds equipment
- most recently, the garden blower.
Laura Thomson
Hi Everyone!
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and now for a happy new year. Hope Santa spoilt you all and
you've had a good break. I definitely noticed quite a few juniors out at the yacht club having fun during
these holidays.
Earlier these holidays, Sinead and Lache Stone went to the 29er Nationals at McCrae. They came 34th
out of 49 and they had a fun regatta. Aaron Pimm also went away and crewed for Wes Ward at the
Tasar Nationals in South Australia.
Congratulations to the 12 Tackers 1s and the 5 Tackers 2s who completed their courses in the holidays.
There was also a group of teens who did a start sailing course. Well done to all the kids.
Starting on 2nd February, we have a Tackers 2 running on a Saturday morning from 9am until 1pm and
on a Sunday afternoon Tackers 1 will be run from 1pm until 5pm. Places are still available so book in as
places are going fast!
Next week, we will be holding the junior-run regatta on 9th February! Registration will start from 1pm
and there will be an entry fee of $10. I would like as many juniors out there from 1pm to help with set
up and find out what their job will be. Briefing will be at 2 pm so the start and rescue boats will need
to hit the water soon after. Races will start at 3pm and we will try fit in as many sprint races as we can
in an hour and a half or so. Presentation will be held from 6:30pm and prizes will be given. Dinner will
be served from 7pm. Dinner will be warm chicken and salad, for dessert we will be serving fruit salad
with ice cream. The cost for dinner and dessert will be $20 and for children under 12, the cost will be
$10. We will also be running the galley, all day. All money raised will go to the junior fund to be used to
improve junior sailing facilities and make it lots more fun and enjoyable for all.
On 16th and 17th February we have 5 juniors (so far) representing AWYC at the Lidgett Trophy
Optimist regatta. The Richardson girls (Lily, Matilda and Olivia) and Simon and I are going to the
regatta at Davey’s Bay. Entries need to be in by Wednesday, February 6 th , and the more juniors we
have representing the club the better! It is a coaching regatta so there will be coaches helping both on
and off the water. It's a great opportunity to improve your Opti sailing. Davey’s Bay does stress it is not
a Learn to Sail event so you need to have reasonable skills to attend this event. Also, later this season,
we have juniors going away to represent the club at Vic and NSW Opti States.
For those bigger kids who aren't attending the Lidgett Trophy and are over 12 we are hosting a power
boat handling course. I did this course last year and found it very interesting and useful. Doing this
course gives you a powerboat handling certificate which could be very useful in the future. It can also
be used to get a Powerboat License easier than normal under the NSW state requirements, just
present your certificate and log-book and pay for your license at the RTA.
Lots happening in the next couple of months and lots of sailing to be done. Hope to see you all on the
water soon.
As coordinator I feel very honoured that Sailability Albury Wodonga
received a nomination for the Community Group of the Year at the
Australia Day Albury Awards. I am extremely proud of this group and wish
to thank the sub-committee and regular volunteers for making this program
worthy of such recognition. Although we didn’t win the award (Carevan
took the well-deserved honour), hopefully, we have raised awareness of
our program through this nomination and by attending the event.
Sailability Victoria has sent a supply of their new brochures, which you will
find in the brochure stand at the Club. This brochure not only lists all the
Sailability programs in Victoria but also explains about Sailability in its
many forms. It also includes a donation slip for anyone after a tax
deductable donation.
Saturday 12 th January’s session saw 23 people go for a sail. The day ran
smoothly with the sailors spreading their arrival times rather than all turning
up at once. Thanks to Simon Brown for also having his Access 303 on the
water and taking people for a sail. This allowed us to take more people at
once with many getting a second sail in. Thanks to all volunteers who
assisted as we had some of our regulars away on holidays.
Kalianna had their first Sailability Experience on Tuesday 22 nd January. A huge thanks to Lily & Matilda
Richardson, George & Oscar Henderson and Simon Thomson for taking the participants for a sail. Laura
Thomson assisted on shore coordinating our skippers to ensure they all got a break, as she was unable to sail
herself. Kalianna will have their second Sailability Experience on Tuesday 5th Feb 10am – 1pm. Obviously, our
juniors will be back at school and other volunteers back at work, so if you are available to assist set up is from
9am.
We held our first Corporate Sailability Experience on Wednesday 23 rd January. Corporate Sailability is about
opening the program up to able-bodied groups as a team bonding or social event. Eighteen people from the
Wodonga Primary School Leadership Group and their partners attended and had a two-hour sailing experience
followed by drinks and pizza on the shaded lawn. The funds from hiring the boats for such Corporate events go
back into the Sailability program to benefit all-ability sailors. If you know of any companies or social groups that
may be interested in this program please give them my name, number &/or email. Or if you would like to assist in
marketing &/or approaching companies with this new offering please let me know.
Dates for the remainder of this year’s program are listed below. Please make note of these dates and consider
offering a few hours of your day to bring a smile to someone’s face. If you want to know more information about
the program or volunteering please email or phone any questions or talk to Cathy Richardson or myself at the
Club.
group.
Congratulations also to the twelve Tackers-1s and five Tackers-2s who have also
completed training over this same week of the school holidays. Thanks to Leanne, Aaron Pimm, Sinead and
both in the morning and afternoon and as usual presented courses in a safe, fun and professional manner.
