“Sail Away” December 08
Hello All,
Phil Clements
As the festive season rapidly approaches, the water level continues to hold
its own and the prospect of us seeing out a full season is virtually assured (I
reckon!). Compared to this time last year we are have about 2% more water
and more rain is forecast before Christmas.
All in all it is really good news for us as a club. So don’t use the possibility
of losing the water as an excuse not to come on out and enjoy the facilities
and the water!! In reality, even at really low levels that we have
experienced in the past, the water available is still better from both a
quantity and quality perspective than most of our other inland colleagues.
50 th Anniversary.
I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who participated in the 50 th
celebrations on the weekend of the 22nd/23 rd Nov. The Sat night function
was well attended by around 140 people with visitors came from as far as
Queensland and southern Victoria. The displays were excellent and covered
the decades comprehensively. (We are fortunate that each generation seems
to have had an ardent photographer to record events.) John Carlé’s band set
the mood with some great music; the Table Top Red Cross kept us fed and
the drinks, talking and stories flowed all night!
On the Sunday, the club area looked great and as lunch time drew near the
crowds swelled and the lawn filled up with picnickers and more visitors all
enjoying the facilities and company of new and old friends. The weather
wasn’t ideal but that didn’t detract from the atmosphere of the day.
A few special thanks need to be made to:
• Our organizing committee; Gail Carlé, Diana Veitch, Les Langford,
Alan and Phyllis Hodge, Bruce Avery and Wes Ward
3

“Sail Away” December 08
• the general committee members who supported and assisted with the
event
• Thomson’s Graphipress (Donald and Leanne) who undertook the
design and printing work for the flyers and posters. These were quite
amazing and some samples are on display in the clubhouse.
• John Carlé for the music
A group photo (Editor: see supplement) was taken and we are in the
process of getting it set up and available for sale as a momento of the event.
I would also point out that we have some more hats, shirts and stubbie
holders available to commemorate the event. They will make a great
Christmas (or new year) presents!
On another social front, the Christmas afternoon at the club was also well
attended. Even Santa found us and delighted a small contingent of younger
members.
After lunch, the amusement levels were raised with about thirty people
having a ‘try-sailing’ relay on the Access Dinghy’s. Some good breeze and
a challenging course (for some!) kept the coaching and rescue crews on
their toes. All up it was a great way to finish up the first half of the season.
On the administrative front, our half time score is looking pretty good.
Revenues and expenditures are both down on expectations, however we are
still forecasting a break even situation for our end of year result. Only the
basic R&M activities are being undertaken and suitable prudence with
expenditure continues to be the strategy for this year.
Our Treasurer, Jeff, produces an impressive array of monthly reports that
look at our position from all angles. Anyone who would like to look at them
is welcome to do so. Just speak to either Jeff or myself and we will provide
you with a copy.
If you aren’t going anywhere over the holidays, don’t forget that the Club is
available for members to use over the Christmas period. At the 25% level
there is plenty of water out there. You are welcome to use the clubhouse
and facilities for a picnic, BBQ or bit of solitude! Just remember that we
have no hired help so it is important that you clean up after yourself and
remove any rubbish to the dumpster up the back.
Please note that there will be no newsletter in January, so either check the
website for details of upcoming events or watch out in your e-mails for any
upcoming events. If you aren’t on e-mail, just let us know if there are any
special events you would like to be kept informed about and we will get
details to you as they come to hand.
Committee Meetings:
In order to keep you abreast of Committee activities I will continue to
include a brief report on discussions held at the monthly meetings. If you
have any queries, please feel free to ask any of the Committee members.
December Meeting:
Matters considered included:
• Christmas function
• Financial position & budget review
• Events next year
• Maintenance activities
With Christmas just around the corner I’d like to wish all of you the very
best for the festive season. For those of you going away, enjoy yourselves,
good sailing and travel carefully.
Duty Expectations
Saturday: Not all of the crew are expected to be there when there is no racing
the fuel containers for the boats are full. If there is racing please be there 1½
hours before race start.
Sunday: from at least 1½ hour before first race of the day until no boats are
sailing. Galley from 10.00am.
Pisces (Terry Caldwell, John Hawkesworth, Brian Royal and Tony
Harrington).
Some highlights: Brian Royal thought the facilities were great and had one
more shower than he normally would. Brian and Tony had an interesting
dance around the mast on a slippery deck in a strong gust. John
Hawkesworth found somebody else who liked VB. John slipped off the side
and was sprawled across the back of the boat without letting go of the tiller
(which he had informed me earlier would only be released if boltcutters
were used!) or the mainsheet, which is very reminiscent of his cat sailing
days. Donald still had a navigation problem but not on the water - this time
he couldn’t find a favoured eating place. Julian took a couple of days of
tender care to overcome his sunburn and creams and a personal electric fan
(read Sinead’s tip in the Junior Report!)
Herman gets another
trophy for the mantlepiece
“Sail Away” December 08
Access Dinghy Racing
After Christmas lunch, Commodore Phil, split everybody into two teams
for relay races on two Access Dinghies. They were a lot harder to sail than
expected, with the automatic reaction to gust just the opposite on the joysticks
to using a tiller. A couple of wily older sailors did reach behind and
hold the tiller after watching the difficulties that the others were having.
Herman showed his good boat-handling skills in a smooth and quick relay
leg for the A team. The genetics showed true with his daughter, Leanne,
and grand-daughter, Laura, having the best leg for the B team. Mark Harris
had the most time for the shortened course as he took Jill Cardwell for an
extended cruise.
It was good for lots of members to have experience in these so that they
can help Sailability groups in the future (it will happen, despite having to
cancel twice already, due to unsuitable weather). Some students from St
Paul’s had an afternoon with the Access Dinghies too, so that helping
groups for a sail might become a part the community service component of
their Christian Studies course.
Left: Daryl
Right: Tight fit
Membership changes
New Members: Karen Toddie (social member, introduced by the Bejstas)
and James Brown (sailing member, sails on Executive Suite)
Resignations: Peter Campbell and Hayden Virtue
Soon!: Paul Ransley, owner of Joint Adventure (Castle 650). His wife,
Joyce, and daughter, Alice, were at the club for the Christmas lunch.
Want to be a crew?
If there are members out there who are looking for boats to crew on, make
sure you put your name forward in the next newsletter. If other people
interested, put them in touch. Contact me on 60432663 or
Terry.Caldwell8@Bigpond.com. Paul Ransley, in Castle 650, Joint
Adventure (pictured below), will be back in February and keen to have a
permanent crew.
Rescue crew
We are very keen to hear from anyone who might be available as a regular
crew for a rescue boat and back-up starter. Maybe there’s someone who
would like to volunteer for next season.
So, just how DO you
dispose of flares?
Cliff Swatton has recently been trying to dispose of out of date flares ‘in a
safe and responsible manner’. Because they are classified as explosives by
several organisations, there are implications for their transport and
handling, which makes it all too difficult for many organisations to want to
deal with them.
For instance:
• The Maritime Services NSW don’t handle them.
• The NSW Police suggested the Army.
• The Army only handle their own stuff.
• The Victorian Police will, but the Explosives classification
requires a lot of paperwork
• The NSW Fire Brigade will deal with them through the Fire
Training Centre at Deniliquin, which is a bit too far away to
be useful.
• The Wodonga Council is not licensed to handle explosives at
their transfer depot, but they were very helpful.
The most reasonable solution to the problem seems to be for the Club
committee to contact Worksafe Victoria (at the suggestion of the Wodonga
Council) and arrange a suitable procedure for collection possibly once or
twice a year. The committee will look into this early in 2009.
Thank you Cliff for checking this out!
