Phil Clements
Hello All,
As the festive season rapidly approaches, the water level continues to hold its own and the prospect of us
seeing out a full season is virtually assured (I reckon!). Interestingly, both Lake Hume and Dartmouth
are about 7% fuller than this time last year. And last year’s figures were an improvement on the year
before!
All in all, it is really good news for us as a club. So don’t use the possibility of losing the water as an
excuse not to come on out and enjoy the facilities and the water!! In reality, even at really low levels
that we have experienced in the past, the water available is still better from both a quantity and quality
perspective than most of our other inland colleagues.
Jeff Stirling and I met with our landlord (Goulburn Murray Water) during November to discuss the
access road condition and our current lease situation. Overall the discussion was very positive.
Since then I have obtained a quote for road-works and put forward a proposal to GMW to have these
works undertaken as soon as possible.
GMW has now provided us with a draft of a model lease agreement and assorted conditions that is being
reviewed by the committee and our Honorary Legal Officer Tony Brandt. Once we have deliberated on
these documents we will let you know what has been proposed and considered acceptable.
Based on the discussions that were held, it is our belief that GMW are keen to foster recreational use of
the Lake and were impressed by the work we had done and the condition of the grounds and facilities.
This will hold us in good stead for a reasonable lease arrangement with them.
Christmas at the Club
This weekend there will be the annual Christmas function after the race on Sunday morning. Santa will
be visiting and I hope there will be a good roll up of members to have a relaxing afternoon on the lake.
Plan is to once again bring out the Access dinghies for another ‘Try Sailing’ event.
Other Events
I’m pleased to see the response to the Wednesday evening events at the Club that have been organised
by John Landon. They are proving very popular and for good reason…..what better way to have a mid
week wind-down than a sail and/or swim followed by a BBQ or picnic tea watching the sun set on the
Lake. For those that haven’t ventured out, keep an eye out for the e-mail alerts for the next event.
Sailability
Check out the details for this Saturday’s event starting at 9am. Volunteers required from about 8.00am
please. There has already been a positive response in terms of bookings for this session.
Admin
On the administrative front, our half-time score is looking pretty good. Revenues and expenditures are
both down on expectations. However, we are still forecasting a break even situation for our end of year
““Sail Away” December 2009
esult. Only the basic R&M activities are being undertaken and suitable prudence with expenditure
continues to be the strategy for this year.
Our Treasurer, Jeff, produces an impressive array of monthly reports that look at our position from all
angles. Anyone that would like to look at them is welcome to do so. Just speak to either Jeff or myself
and we will provide you with a copy.
Holidays
If you aren’t going anywhere over the holidays, don’t forget that the Club is available for members to
use over the Christmas period. At the 32% level there is plenty of water out there. You are welcome to
use the clubhouse and facilities for a picnic, BBQ or bit of solitude! Just remember that we have no
hired help so it is important that you clean up after yourself and remove any rubbish to the dumpster up
the back.
Please note that there will be no newsletter in January, so either check the website for details of
upcoming events or watch out in your e-mails for any upcoming events. If you aren’t on e-mail, just let
us know if there are any special events you would like to be kept informed about and we will get details
to you as they come to hand.
Future Activities
This season there has been a number of changes to the way we undertake our activities. Most notable has
been the change to the club-racing format on Sunday mornings and the Wednesday evening social
function. These are excellent initiatives that we hope are appealing to members.
However, we need feedback and we also need more participation and more new faces around the club.
Do you have any other ideas/thoughts?
The committee has some concerns and needs to determine how to get the club moving forward. Further
discussions around this topic are being planned for 2010 but feel free to put your views forward at any
time.
Committee Meetings:
In order to keep you abreast of Committee activities I will continue to include a brief report on
discussions held at the monthly meetings. If you have any queries, please feel free to ask any of the
Committee members.
December Meeting:
Matters considered included:
Christmas function
Financial position & budget review
Events next year
Maintenance activities
Vic TY Titles
Media coverage
With Christmas just around the corner I’d like to wish all of you the very best for the
festive season. For those of you going away, enjoy yourselves, good sailing and travel
carefully.
Parking for Vic TY Championships:
We will ensure that visiting sailors to have access to level areas for parking their TYs on the
weekend of February 20-21 as they will mostly be sleeping abroad their boats on trailers.
Hence it would be appreciated if any boats that are not sailing on that weekend are moved away
from the western side of the club.
The Committee members will move them onto the foreshore if necessary on February 14, after
the Sail Inland racing.
We will also ensure that the TYs have access to the pontoon for boarding and disembarking for
the championships, so members, including duty crew, please be mindful of this.
Club Coaching - assistance required:
Our Club Coach, Rob Minato, will be away for the better part of this season due to work
commitments overseas. Rob will be in the Solomon Islands for five weeks.
Hence, there is an opportunity for someone else to join Rob as a co-coach.
If you think this sort of thing might interest you, please contact Terry or Phil to discuss. The
Club is prepared to assist a suitable candidate to get the appropriate certification for this role.
Corporate Events - co-ordinator required
The committee would like to see some corporate events at our club happening during our
season. It could take a few different formats. One that is favoured is an afternoon similar to last
year’s Christmas afternoon where we had relay races with the Sailability craft and this would be
provided for small businesses to have their staff get together for a fun afternoon. This could be
done on the same afternoon as the Sailability mornings when the boats will be out and ready.
The success of any activity usually depends on it being well-run. We need a coordinator for the
corporate events.
Let Phil or Terry know if you can take on this role or assist with the events.
Keep it clean!
Members are welcome to use the Clubhouse and facilities over the Christmas break. In fact you
are encouraged to use them!
Just remember that we don’t employ cleaners so you need to ensure that you and your visitors
keep the facilities clean and tidy.
In particular garbage bins should be emptied into the dumpster up the back and garbage bags
replaced. (New ones are on the shelf under the counter in the galley).
Please don’t leave any perishable rubbish in the bins inside the clubhouse.
Terry Caldwell
Hi folks
We had an interesting time getting in just the one race on December 6. There was some doubt as to
whether a race could be abandoned when a boat was finished (much to Wes’s chagrin).
Rule 32.1 states “However, after one boat has sailed the course and finished within the time limit, if any,
the race committee shall not abandon the race without considering the consequence for all boats in the
race or series”
Remembering that race rules are in place for fairness, the decision to abandon is justified. Fortunately .
Wes got a good result in the resail and that was only fair!
DURING THE WEEK SAILING, WEDNESDAY 9/12/2009
Hi everyone, just a quick note to thank those that fronted for the second Wednesday sailing/socialising
event and further advising that our last one for 2009 is Wednesday, December 9 at around 1730 hours.
The last day was attended by around 15 happy people who sailed in a pleasant 5 knot South East breeze.
We had 2 trailables, 3 Lasers and Ron Gibson in his tinny fishing. “What could be better?” you ask, and
I say “Come and join us and find out!”
The BBQ was busy and the socialising around the Club was fantastic.
December 9 will be the last “organised” day for this year but we will be back on January 20, 2010
Bring your boat, food, drinks and be prepared to have a swim
THIS ACTIVITY IS TO BE RELAXED AND FUN. BE PREPARED.
I aim to be at the Club from around 1630 hours. See you there.
“Ropes” Article
(submitted by Phil Clements)
Double-braid polyester, which has a braided core of polyester as well as the polyester
braided cover, is suitable for spinnaker halyards, topping lifts and headsail sheets on
medium performance smaller boats where stretch is not a consideration.
Spectra is the trade name for a polyethylene fibre derived from crude oil developed in
the US by Honeywell in the 1980s. It has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios
of any man-made fibre, is light enough to float and has superior resistance to chemicals,
water and ultra-violet light. Honeywell says that its top grade, Spectra 1000, is 15
times stronger than steel.
Dyneema, a similar high molecular weight polyethylene from Dutch State Mines
(DSM), has a higher breaking strength in larger diameters and slightly better wear
characteristics in heavy use areas. Its newest fibre, Dyneema SK78, is stronger and has
lower 'creep' (stretching permanently when placed under constant load) than its previous
bench mark Dyneema SK75.
Vectran, developed in Japan, is a liquid crystal polymer. Its molecules are stiff, rodlike
structures which give it excellent fibre tensile properties. It has very low stretch, a
high-breaking strength and negligible creep. It is good around tight bends and has good
abrasion resistance.
PBO is a fibre that came from a class of high-performance polymers called PBZs. It is
stronger than steel, has extremely low stretch and no creep. It was used in halyards and
standard rigging on the America’s Cup yachts and is finding favour in grand prix offshore
racers. Downsides are it does not have good flex resistance, degrades quickly in
sunlight and is extremely expensive.
Dynex and the newer-generation Dynex Dux are extremely strong ropes produced by
Hampidjan of Iceland from DSM Dyneema fibre. They are stronger than steel wire
ropes of the same diameter, will float, have low elongation and are extremely flexible.
Dynex Dux 75 is a pre-stretched braided rope with ultra-high breaking strength. It is
very firm and compact with a smooth surface. Elongation is very low, about three per
cent. The rope is impregnated to improve abrasion resistance and endurance.
Besides the aramid Kevlar, Nomex and PBO, Technora and Cordura are now being
used in jackets on high-performance boats. Technora, a para-aramid fibre made from
co-polymers, has excellent fatigue resistance to avoid abrasion around winches and
better heat resistance then Kevlar and is salt-water resistant. Cordura, a nylon fabric,
has high abrasion resistance and general toughness.
