Ready Set Go!David StoffelsThese are the words that come to mind for me as we launch into what I would think to be one of the bestlooking seasons we have had for some time. Just the vibe around the club is a clear indication of the kind ofsummer we have ahead, which I hope excites you as much as it does me.Often you hear me talk about the fantastic work some of our members do around the club. It struck me theother night at our monthly committee meeting, just what an outstanding job two of our quieter faces on thecommittee really do. These two gentlemen could almost be seen as the backbone of our club and I think don’talways get the recognition they deserve. So next time you see Jeff Stirling and Peter Quigley around the club.Don’t forget to give them a pat on the back. Thanks to Wes Ward for stepping in to fill the role of Publicity Officer whilst David Haberfield is overseas.Last Sunday saw the first Novice & Ladies Helms race for the season. Congratulations to Kaye, Andrea,Jacqueline and Lil on an outstanding effort on behalf of the ladies. Great to see you on the water, in such greatracing conditions. Our first Wednesday social sailing night was a great success. It was great to see some new faces and we hadaround six boats in the water for the social sail. However the lack of wind made for a slow race. We all had agreat laugh with John Landon managing to sail backwards at one stage. If you haven’t attended a Wednesdaynight social night we look forward to seeing you at the next one – Wednesday October 192011. Last night’smembers draw jackpotted to $50 as an added incentive…We have a busy few weeks ahead. This Sunday October 9, we have a site at the Wodonga Children’s Fair from 10am to 3pm. If you have a sparehour or two head down to the Wodonga Racecourse to lend us a hand, it would be greatly appreciated.Sailability will kick off on Saturday October 15 at 1pm. Numbers are looking extremely positive for the comingseason – if you are available for assistance please contact Donald or myself. Our annual Go Sailing Open Day is on Sunday November 6, 2011 – 12 noon till 3.30pm. Please feel free to invitefamily, friends, neighbours, work colleagues or anyone who you think would enjoy sailing as much as we do.We are on the lookout for a good quality lounge, sports gear, beanbags, board games and television for the kids’room.A friendly reminder that all membership and storage fees are now due and should be forwarded as soon aspossible. As you would appreciate, your fees maintain the viability of our wonderful club and its future. (As mywife says it’s another boat out of our driveway – if it’s stored at the club).CheersDave“Sail Away” October 2011

ENJOY BEING AN AUSSIE!(Not from the Treasuer!)Just imagine…If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in QANTAS one year ago,you would have $49.00 today! If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have $33.00 today. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have $0.00 today. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminiumcans for recycling refund, you would have received $214.00.Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg.A recent study found that the average Aussie walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found that Aussiesdrink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means that, on average, Aussies get about 41 miles to thegallon!Makes you damned proud to be an Aussie!Corporate Events - Coordinator RequiredThe committee would like to see some corporate events at our club happening during our season. It could take a few differentformats. One that is favoured is an afternoon similar to our Christmas afternoons when we have relay races with the Sailabilitycraft and this would be provided for small businesses to have their staff get together for a fun afternoon. The success of any activity usually depends on it being well-run. We need a coordinator for the corporate events. Let DaveStoffels or Terry Caldwell know if you can take on this role or assist with the events. Thanks very much to Dean Quinlivan forthe donation of a new push mower/slasherand his ongoing servicing of our groundsequipment.Albury Engineering & MowerService208 Borella RdPh 02 60411444Programmed PropertyServices3 Hempel St,WODONGA, VIC 3690D 02 6024 7333“Sail Away” October 2011

SafetyWhat a dry topic safety is.But with the new season upon us, it is something that we all need to be mindful of. I would just like to touch ona couple of points in relation to the safety and well being of our racers, cruising members and the general public. The rescue boat:If the rescue boat has to leave the course, please radio it to the fleet so the trailer sailers and start boat can keepan eye on the off the beach craft. This is especially important at the start of the season with the water temperaturebeing so low.I was rescued a couple of years ago while Gavin and I were having a social sail in Gavin’s cat. John Pimm was onthe rescue boat and was not only watching the racing craft; he was watching the social craft as well. After therace he had the good sense to come and look for us. We had had a gear failure and were stranded way downnear the Bridge, (then out of the southerly mist came the rescue boat with John Wayne Pimm at the helm). Yes Iwas so glad to see him. We were cold and very bothered.SafetyThe first rule in the racing rules is: 1.1 Helping those in danger, a boat or competitor shall give all possiblehelp to any person or vessel in danger. For the big trailables the best way we can help is to have a life buoy and a working radio (unlike mine last seasonwhen I kicked the aerial out of the radio and was blaming everyone else’s radio for not working) so let’s testthese radios and make sure they’re working.Below are the links to down load the Yachting Victoria declaration of Compliance Safety Equipment Check List. These links are for Category 6 / 7 and category 5 / 5n for the more adventurous.http://www.vic.yachting.org.au/site/yachting/vic/downloads/2010/Safety/Part%201%20Declaration%20and%20Checklist%20Cats%205N%20and%205%2004.10.pdfhttp://www.rbyc.org.au/site/yachting/rbyc/downloads/Downloads/2009-12%20Declaration%20EquipmentHave fun and be safe.Col Hobbs27 Meg Radio to be Phased Out in 201527 Meg Radio is to be phased out during the next 3½ years. Category 6: (Short racesclose to shore in relatively warm or protected waters, normally held in daylight) will nowinclude mobile telephones and/or club preferred VHF radio as a required radio in the newYA Special regulations to be introduced in 2013. The purpose of this notice is to alertYacht owners and Clubs of the proposed changes. Ultimately the frequencies will disappearand be used for some other appliance.“Sail Away” October 2011

Laura ThomsonAs the new Junior Rep is yet to be chosen I am writing a short report to keep everyone up to date in themeantime. The Junior Rep will need to be elected by the Juniors of the club. The rep’s job is to report on juniors’activities each month. This involves an article in the monthly newsletter and updating the ManagementCommittee on things relating to juniors by sending a report to their meetings to be read out. Please consider if you think you would like this role.In next month’s newsletter we will list the candidates with details of who they are so the juniors can then decidewhom they wish to elect. If you wish to nominate please write your name, age, sailing experience and why youthink you should be the Rep. (The details you write down will be what is put in the newsletter). We are all very excited to be the first regional Tackers Centre in Australia. Tackers is for kids aged 7-12, but theGISBS Learn To Sail program will still be running for kids over 12. If you are interested in learning to sail, get yourmum or dad to send an email to awyc.training@gmail.com with your name, age and any prior sail training youhave completed. The season has already started and it’s great to see a fleet of juniors already out there racing. The Junior Helmmini-regatta held on Sunday 2nd October saw windy and choppy conditions. The regatta had three heats (countbest two) with the results:1st Laura Thomson, Oopsy! – 1st, 1st, 1st2nd Kale Geraghty, The Jack Sparrow – 2nd, 2nd, 2nd3rd Simon Thomson, GAZZA – DNS, DNS, 3rdWe are very glad to see Lachlan and Sinead Stone back at the club. It will be great to have some older teens atthe club with so much sailing experience. They competed over the long weekend at the Yachting NSW YouthChampionships at Lake Illawarra in very windy conditions. They finished 10 th out of 21 boats. Great job!Don’t forget that we are collecting the Pauls collect-a-caps so we can raise funds for the junior clubroom. Thereis a collection box near the tea & coffee area.LIFE-JACKETS REQUEST: Anyone with old lifejackets lying about thatthey no longer need, please consider donating them to the Sailabilityprogram.
