Initiatives and activities for 2010
• A rewrite of the Year 7 program is planned to incorporate units of work in Media and
Visual Art. A Year 7 unit based around observations of the natural world, symmetry in
nature and pattern-making will utilise digital photography. This unit will incorporate the
community Rangoli project
• A Year 8 sculpture unit titled Identity, focussed on visual studies of anatomy and body
language will begin in Term 1, culminating in each student creating a small figurine
based on their own sense of self. This unit will also examine how identity is
constructed by the media and students will investigate how an individual sense of self
can be developed in the face of powerful media messages
• The faculty is investigating the possibility of students from the Middle School working
with an artist in residence to explore Indigenous perspectives in the Visual Art curriculum
SPORT - ANDREWS CUP AND JUNIOR SPORT
Andrews Cup
Many positive changes to the structure of Sport within the Junior School occurred this year.
A number of new and exciting development programs were introduced within softball,
netball and cross country which kick-started the long-term plan of gaining greater
participation and success at Andrews Cup for St Hilda’s School students.
The Andrews Cup Swimming competition held in Toowoomba was the first cup day of the
year. The St Hilda’s team put up a great fight to try and hold onto the trophy for a fourth
consecutive year, but was pipped at the post by Moreton Bay College. However, the Andrews
Cup Swimming squad for 2010 is training hard to try and regain the trophy next year.
The Andrews Cup Tennis event was relocated to a Brisbane venue with more courts which
ensured a greater atmosphere and better spectatorship of the sport. The team did
exceptionally well, gaining a first place in the C grade competition.
