to any of the senior staff at Tihoi, including the
Director. The clinic is open every interval, and
provides time and opportunity for social and
personal, as well as paramedical assistance.
Tihoi staff, together with the Physical Education
Department at St Paul’s, Hamilton, have
developed a comprehensive health education
programme with a special emphasis on drug
education.
Students and staff also have access to
professional counselling from the Chaplain, and
the Guidance Counsellor, who visit on a regular
basis.
International Students
The Director of International Students provides
advice, guidance and supportive counselling to
international students. The Director also provides
a vital home-school liaison function as required
by the Ministry of Education’s Code of Practice
for the Pastoral Care of International Students. In
addition the Director of International Students
teaches ESOL to international students and
permanent residents, for whom English is a
second language.
While the Housemasters have the day to day
care of the international students, the Director
of International Students, as the person
designated by the Headmaster to undertake this
role, has the overall responsibility of ensuring the
specific requirements in the Code of Practice
for the Pastoral Care of International Students
are addressed. These include such issues as
academic progress, attendance, welfare and
accommodation.
The Code of Practice specifies that this applies
to all international students, whether on
exchange or full-time study, and whether they
are living in a boarding house, in home stay
accommodation or living with their designated
caregiver. In addition, there are special
requirements for students under the age of
eighteen. Should a serious situation or traumatic
incident ever arise requiring an outside agency
or liaison with the Police, then assistance and
advice would be asked from the Chaplain, the
Health Clinic Staff, and/or from the Headmaster.
Career planning is provided by the Director of
International Students, the Assistant Headmaster
and by the Careers Adviser.
