Fairplay The School is a signatory and a strong supporter of the Hillary Commission’s Fairplay Initiative. Students competing in the host of activities offered by the School are expected to play to the best of their ability, show respect for their opponents, their coaches, their supporters and teammates. SPORTS AWARDS Colours is the highest award a student can attain in recognition of his or her achievements in a sport. Students eligible to receive a Colours Award are clearly recognised as ‘top’ in their sport and the awards are traditionally made at the annual Sports Awards function. The Colours Committee consists of the following: Chairman – Headmaster Secretary – Director of Extra-Curricular Activities Members – Deputy Headmaster Full Sports Colours Candidates for the award of Full Colours shall have in all cases proven to be exemplary role models. In the opinion of the Colours Committee they must meet the highest standards of behaviour both in and out of the classroom before being eligible for these awards. In addition to this candidates will have: 1. Passed beyond Year 10. 2. Consistently displayed outstanding ability, and commitment to their chosen sporting activity. 3. Shown outstanding sportsmanship as outlined in the Hillary Commission Fairplay Charter. 4. Be a student member of a School First team. 5. Met the following criteria as it relates to his/ her sport: • Athletics and Swimming – win an event in the Waikato Secondary Schools Championships and/or qualify for, and compete in, the New Zealand Age Group or North Island Championships. • Cricket, Rugby, Soccer, Tennis, Netball, and Basketball – the player must have gained provincial representative honours (U17/U18) or, in the opinion of his/her coach, reached a standard equivalent to this. • Rowing – compete at U17 or U18 level and finish in either the top three in the North Island (North Island Secondary Schools Championships) or in the top six at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships (Maadi Cup Regatta), or complete a witnessed 2km Ergometer in under 6 minutes 30 seconds (men) or 7 minutes 30 seconds (women). • Hockey – the player must have gained provincial representative honours (U18) or, in the opinion of his/her coach, reached a standard equivalent to this. • Other Sports – gain provincial representative honours (U17/U18) and/or placed in the New Zealand Championships. Junior Sports Colours Candidates for the award of Junior Colours shall have in all cases proven to be exemplary role models. In the opinion of the Colours Committee, they must meet the highest standards of behaviour both in and out of the classroom before being eligible for these awards. Junior Colours are only awarded to students in Years 9, 10 and 11. Candidates must meet similar criteria to those required for Full Colours. Service Tie for Sport This award is for students who have involved themselves to a marked degree in any one of the following areas: 1. Coached or assisted with refereeing or umpiring. 2. Organisation of sport. 3. Control or maintenance of sports gear. 4. Shown exceptional leadership below First Team level or in a Senior Team not in premier competition.
