A CONSTRUCTIVE EDUCATION lower School Students Can’t Wait for the new Addition to the Mansion— they’re learning from It now by Laura Butchy As progress continues on the Lower School construction project and the hum of machinery greets students on their way to school, the work outside also plays a role inside—it’s a teaching tool. The flurry of construction has captured the imaginations of Nursery and Kindergarten students, and teachers have used the opportunity to develop construction curricula. “Both Kindergarten classes are visiting the site, talking to the foreman, and documenting what they see with drawings,” explained Kindergarten B teacher Laurie Green. After one visit to the construction site, Kindergarten B children made a list of what they saw: a cement truck, an excavator, a digger, bricks, a broken wall, a cement bucket, rocks, dust, dirt, a big hole, wood, a hood on the bucket, and a man in a truck. The students also made pencil drawings of what they observed. Though the work isn’t audible from the classroom, they sometimes observe the action out the window and discuss what they see happening and what the workers have to know to do the things they do. “We visit at least once a week, sometimes twice,” Green said. “We work in the room to recreate what they are seeing outside.” In addition to drawing, Green has had the children focus some of their block building on the construction. After watching the cement mixer out their window, the children built a cement mixer, an excavator, and the school’s wall out of blocks. Kindergarten A began the year by drawing pictures of how they imagined the new building will look. Activities since then have included block building and discussion of what the new building will bring the students. “We recently read A House for Hermit Crab, by Eric Carle,” added Risa Novikoff, Kindergarten A head teacher. “This is a story of how the hermit crab outgrows his old shell and searches for a new and larger one. The children are very astute and were able to compare the crab’s need to our own for a larger and more suitable facility to thrive and learn in.” Nursery students have begun to appreciate the construction as well. Irwin Tawil has read quite a few books about construction machinery to his Nursery B class, such as Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. “We’ve gone to the site several times, taken pictures, and studied the machinery that they’re using,” Tawil said. The class has checked on the construction’s progress weekly, either in person or through the window. They’ve also collected dirt and rocks from the yard to use in their sand table. w I N t E R 2 0 0 7 1 9
