“The school aims to develop mentality, physique, and character,
but because the first two of these are menaces without the last, the greatest of these is character.”
—Joseph Dana Allen, Headmaster 1917–1949
Consistent with Dr. Allen’s guiding vision, the mission of the school is to prepare students for college and for
life by fostering learning, health, leadership, community responsibility and, above all, character. In support
of this mission, Poly Prep offers an outstanding program of academics, physical education and athletics, arts,
and other activities, guided by a strong, committed faculty, in a diverse school community, on campuses with
outstanding facilities.
Annual Report

A L E T T E R F R O M T H E H E A D M A S T E R
This year has truly been outstanding. We kicked things off in
September with An Evening with Friends—a spectacular night and
an overwhelmingly successful fundraiser for the September 11
Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event was the perfect launch to a
year that has seen tremendous student achievement made possible
by the tireless efforts of parents, faculty, and staff providing support
and guidance for our community.
I invite you to take a look at Poly’s Annual Report, included in this
magazine. You’ll see that the wonderful giving from the 2005–2006
school year has definitely spilled into 2006–2007, which has seen record philanthropy from parents, alumni,
and friends.
This publication provides a glimpse at some great student and faculty accomplishments. As always, their
endeavors surpass all expectations, and I am constantly reminded why Poly is such an incredible place to be.
David B. Harman
A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e E d i t o r
What a difference six months make! Although I visited Poly’s main
campus several times by last August, I did not officially become a
full-time employee until mid-September. As anyone who has ever
worked for a school will tell you, starting after the beginning of the
school year is a daunting task. No matter how much time you put in,
you always feel a bit behind. The phrase “hit the ground running”
doesn’t even begin to describe my first week.
Six months into my new role, the chaos continues but so does
record productivity for the Communications Office. I have an outstanding team and wonderful colleagues
that make writing for and about students, faculty, and alumni easy and enjoyable. I am delighted by the great
camaraderie shared among faculty, staff, and administration, who work together day after day to advance Poly’s
mission.
Whenever I start to feel overwhelmed, I think back to my first official piece of Poly business—attending An
Evening with Friends. Not a bad first day.
From Poly Rival to Poly Teacher
Jose de Jesus has experience with several independent schools,
but the former Prep for Prep student calls Poly home
Upon finishing undergraduate work at Wesleyan,
history teacher Jose de Jesus knew he didn’t want
to move back home to New York. So, he completed
an intensive two-week teacher-training program at
Collegiate School in Manhattan and then accepted
a position at Concord Academy, a boarding school
in Massachusetts. There he taught history, coached
basketball, and helped run the dorm.
“The first year was only a half-time job, and it was
really sink or swim,” he said. “The kids there were very
bright and expected a lot, which can be tough for a new
teacher. I had some really strong lessons that earned
me credit early on.”
De Jesus had planned for only a brief stint at
teaching, followed by law school, but began rethinking
things after a few short weeks at the boarding school. “I
had never planned to stay at Concord for as long as I did,
but I caught the bug early and knew that I wanted to keep
teaching. One year soon turned into seven,” he said.
Family obligations steered him back to New
York, however, when his wife became pregnant and
he learned that his stepfather was ill. As his wife’s
family was from Brooklyn, the two decided to settle
in the borough as well, and de Jesus began seeking
teaching positions near his new home. During the job
search when recruiting agency Carney, Sandoe and
Associates told him about a vacancy at Poly, his longtime
familiarity with the school made him take notice.
“I was a Prep for Prep kid at Horace Mann, and
we played Poly in sports. Poly was always around,”
de Jesus said. “I remembered that all the kids I had
encountered from Poly over the years I genuinely liked
and thought they were all smart and down-to-earth.”
One of those students was Monique Wilson ’05,
whom de Jesus had met while he was an instructor for
Experiment in International Living, a summer program
that sends high school students abroad for learning
experiences. Wilson—who would go on to win the Poly
Cup and numerous other accolades—was following in
the footsteps of her successful sisters Melanie ’96 and
Marilyn ’98 and was a standout at Poly. During one of
his interviews on campus, de Jesus was spotted by his
former summer student.
“I was walking down the hallway with Louise
Forsyth, learning about the school, when Monique saw
me,” he said. “She ran over to
me and gave me a big hug and
said, ‘Oh please hire him, I love
Mr. de Jesus!’ Then, Louise told
me that if Monique Wilson gave
me a good recommendation—
well, that was big.”
Wilson got her wish and
soon de Jesus found himself
on the faculty. In his third year
at Poly, he’s keeping a busy
schedule, serving as one of the
Form III deans and teaching World History to Form III
students, U.S. History to Form V, and an elective on the
history of Cuba to seniors. The differences between the
boarding school and country day school environments
are noticeable but not surprising, he said.
“I can’t wake up ten minutes before class anymore!”
de Jesus laughed. “I have a commute now, but that’s a
good thing because I like to use the time to think and
to plan for the day. I loved working at Concord because
at a boarding school you live with the kids, so there’s a
very close connection there. But for where I am in my
life right now, Poly is a great place to be.”
When not teaching, de Jesus helps out with
admissions events and talks to prospective families
about Poly, a task that sometimes pairs the Prep for
Prep alum with students currently in the program. He
always proves popular with the crowd and likes to talk
about an exercise he does with his classes, which he
thinks illustrates one of the most unique aspects of
the school.
“I ask students to identify when their families
came to America and from where. One time I did this
here, and we had eighteen countries represented, and
kids from four continents. Only three had families
who had come before the twentieth century—all the
rest were relatively recent. That’s rare—you just don’t
find that everywhere,” he said.
“I then ask the students to imagine sitting next to
that family member coming to America for the first
time, and I tell them ‘You are the manifestation of
that person’s dream. You are a part of that person’s
vision for the future, and that’s big. Now, what do we
do with that?’”
It was a night like no
other. Poly had had
some great celebrations
before, but never in its
152 years had anything of
this magnitude ever taken
place.
An Evening with
Friends was a chameleon.
It was a night of
remembrance, a night
of fundraising for a very
worthy cause, and—quite
fittingly—a night of both laughter and tears. More
than 350 Poly alumni, parents, students, faculty,
staff, and friends gathered at Cipriani 42nd Street for
the big event on Wednesday, September 6, 2006. The
community paid tribute to Poly’s ten alumni and one
parent lost on September 11 and raised more than
$250,000 to benefit Poly’s September 11 Memorial
Scholarship Fund that honors them.
Mistress of Ceremonies and Poly parent
Rosanna Scotto P’12 opened the event with remarks
on Poly’s strong sense of community and how crucial
it was in the wake of the September 11 tragedy. These
sentiments were echoed throughout the evening,
even by New York Governor George Pataki, who
dropped in to make a brief but powerful statement
about the City’s enduring commitment to freedom.
Celebrated actress and Poly parent Meryl Streep
P’04, ’09 provided a videotaped welcome to the
evening’s festivities, and Poly’s beloved headmaster
emeritus William M. Williams offered the invocation.
Assistant head of school for finance Robert
Aberlin ’62 introduced One School Still Remembers,
explores how Poly families dealt with the loss of
their loved ones.
Five years ago, the history of this country was
forever changed with the occurrence of the worst
attack on American soil in history. Through
those excruciatingly difficult days and weeks,
we found out about Poly alums, relatives, and
friends who were lost. And through that chaos
and confusion, the reality of what Poly has always
been became crystal clear. Poly is a community
that supports and cares. Poly is a community that
helps. Poly is a community that remembers.
The night’s extraordinary entertainment
included inspiring
vocal performances
by Douglas Jabara ’84,
Leah Horowitz ’97,
and Art Garfunkel,
who was accompanied
by Poly’s A Cappella
Singers for a rousing
rendition of “And
So It Goes.” The
Paul Taylor Dance
Company performed
the highly acclaimed “Promethean Fire,” hailed by
The New York Times as “simply one of the best works
choreographed by Paul Taylor.”
Leah Horowitz ‘97 Doug Jabara ‘84
The keynote speaker for the evening was Bill Feehan,
partner and co-head of Global Human Resources
Practice and executive committee member of the
board of the 9/11 United Services Group. In his
address, Feehan gave a moving tribute to his father,
a first deputy fire commissioner who lost his life
on September 11, and spoke of their mutual love
for baseball. He left the audience with words of
inspiration drawn from one of his father’s favorite
Art Garfunkel

expressions, “It’s always darkest before the dawn.”
It was for many of us our darkest time after
September 11, 2001. But we have before us
the dawn of opportunity. The opportunity to
remember and honor our heroes, to create
living tributes to them forged out of the everyday
actions of our lives. To take the best of their
example and to let them inspire us as we move
forward and never forget.
Scholarship recipients Sean Carberry ’06 and
Charlotte Werner ’13 spoke about the importance of
the September 11 Memorial Scholarship Fund and
those honored by it. Werner, recipient of the Joseph
Mascali Memorial Scholarship, said her promise to
Joe is to always try her best and be the best person
she can be. “Joe is always in my heart and I love him,”
she said. Carberry completed his term as the Joseph
Della Pietra Scholar in June 2006 and called it “a
great and humbling honor to represent Joseph for
four years.”
Headmaster David B. Harman awarded Stewart
Rahr ’63 the Poly Prep Headmaster’s Award for
Lifetime Achievement in honor of his significant
contributions to families of firefighters and police
who lost their lives on September 11. Rahr’s friend
and classmate Joe Siegel ’63 accepted the award on
his behalf.
As an uplifting end to the night, Poly parent and
Sopranos cast member Steve Schirripa P’10 brought
down the house with his hilarious take as the event’s
auctioneer. He first told the crowd the serendipitous
tale of how he was introduced to Poly by childhood
friend Joe Mascali, who drove him to his Sopranos
audition. Then, after poking fun at Harman for his
slight stumbling over Italian names, Schirripa helped
to secure numerous bids for the five items up for
auction.
The auctioneer also brought along fellow cast
members from the Sopranos, including Sharon
Angela, Lorraine Bracco, Dominic Chianese, Vincent
Curatola, James Gandolfini, and Michael Imperioli.
Schirripa, Chianese, Curatola, and Imperioli offered
themselves as fellow diners for the auction’s biggestticket
item—a dinner with members of the cast at
RAOs for the winning bidder and three of his or her
closest friends. This highly sought-after item went
for a whopping $15,000.
Event organizer and Poly’s director of alumni
relations Lisa Della Pietra ’86 was overwhelmed
by the spirit shared by all in attendance. “The
extraordinary success of An Evening with Friends
is a testament to the enormous amount of love
and warmth that exists throughout the entire Poly
community.”
Connecting through Creativity
Form III Student’s Artwork Resonates as Powerful, Empathic
Last year in Neddi Heller’s Grade 8 art class, student
Paige Anderson was not awash in feelings of artistic
inspiration—she was a little distressed by the task
that lay ahead of her. Heller’s students were assigned
to create art inspired by Hurricane Katrina.
“I had a friend in my English class who was here
because she had to leave her home in New Orleans,”
Anderson said. “It was hard to imagine the suffering
those people went through, and I did not want to ask
my friend about it—I didn’t want to make her think
about it. I think I was able to express how sad I felt
for them, though.”
Out of that sadness Paige created a collage titled
“Hurricane Katrina” that nearly a year later is still
receiving accolades for its strong composition, as
well as its resonance with audiences as a powerfully
empathic response to tragedy.
In the aftermath of Katrina, Heller felt some
distress, as well, as she struggled with how to help
students cope with their feelings about the disaster,
which occurred only days after the beginning of the
school year.
“When Katrina happened, I wanted to help the
kids find a way to express how they felt about what
was going on,” Heller said. “I made the connection
with collage first because they were being bombarded
with images, and I wanted to help them make sense
of what they were seeing.”
Heller made a second connection to the
experience for her students by teaching the work of
prolific artist Romare Bearden, who was noted for
his richly textured collages. In all media he worked
in, Bearden commented on and celebrated various
aspects of the African-American experience.
“Bearden loved jazz music, and it figured heavily
in some of his work. New Orleans represented
jazz for our country—that element of our American
heritage is deeply rooted there,” Heller said. “I
wanted students to know the greatness of New
Orleans and thought that looking at Bearden’s work
could help them understand that and help them make
their own connections to the event and to that part of
the country.”
Heller’s students produced Katrina-inspired
collages that varied as broadly in their scope as they
did in their visual presentation.
“Some students spoke out against the
government with their art, while other pieces were
more Matisse-like,” Heller recalled. “Overall, the
work was strong, but Paige’s collage really stood out.”
Anderson employed very simple elements to
symbolize loss and displacement in her awardwinning
piece. A home floating in water, a cat, and
an uprooted tree served as important components
of the design, which has evoked powerful emotional
responses in many who have viewed it. She worked
closely with Heller to hone the paper-tearing
techniques used to create collage, and together the
two explored strategies for expressing certain ideas
through color.
Anderson was first honored with a Gold Key
award by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.
She was one of more than 200 New York–area teens
recognized as emerging artists by the Scholastic Art
& Writing Awards, sponsored by the Alliance. As
part of this, she was acknowledged at a ceremony
on April 6, 2006, at the Brooklyn Museum, and the
piece was displayed there throughout the month.
1 0 P O L Y P R E P M A G A Z I N E

Anderson’s award-winning “Hurricane Katrina”
“Hurricane Katrina” was then chosen as one
of only 25 student creations nationwide to be put
on display at the U.S. Department of Education in
Washington, DC, from December 4, 2006, through
January 31, 2007. Anderson and her family were
invited to attend a special reception at the White
House, where she received a private tour of the
famous residence, as well as the Capitol.
“I was really excited to get to go to Washington
for the day,” Anderson said. “I got to meet the
other students whose art was selected, and we were
interviewed by Scholastic for a video. We also saw
[British Prime Minister] Tony Blair, which was
exciting.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are given
out yearly, but Anderson’s work was recognized
as part of a special initiative of the Alliance,
“Kids Reconstruct with Creativity.” This project
exhibits original artwork and writing created by
young people of all ages in response to Hurricanes
Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. It is similar to a former
project of the Alliance, “ARTifacts: Kids Respond
to a World in Crisis,” started as a response to the
events of 9/11.
he first time Science Department chair Sandy
Bornstein went to the Galapagos Islands, it was the trip
of a lifetime. She had no idea she would soon be turning
it into the course of a lifetime.
In summer 2005, shortly after returning from her
first Galapagos trip, sponsored by a Williams Chair
grant, Bornstein made a presentation for the Science
Department.
Around the same time, fellow science teacher
Suzanne Wolbers was energetically pursuing travel
options for students. She found a company that runs
educational tours and took a teachers’ trip offered
over winter break. Conversations between the two
soon spurred the idea of returning to Galapagos with
students and turning the experience into a course on
evolutionary theory.
“Since Suzanne had success with the company for
her trip to Costa Rica, we started seriously thinking
about the possibility of going back to Galapagos
with students and making it a class,” Bornstein said.
“Everything we experienced during our first trips to
the islands seemed perfectly suited for the field trip
component of a course.”
And so it began—a summer elective for credit. A
first for Poly, and a first for Bornstein. While all new
courses require substantial planning, this one was
unique in both the scope of its development and the
unusual timing.
“We wanted to ensure that the students would be
ready for the trip, which meant a significant amount of
reading,” Bornstein said. “And we had to find a way to
make sure there was time enough to prepare and make
our way through the material before we set out on the
trip.”
The students began coursework in the spring
and met in the summer a few times before the July
excursion. The teachers engaged their class in
writing-to-think activities, which involve presenting
students with material slightly beyond their normal
range and then helping them implement strategies for
comprehension.
“Galapagos was for Darwin the centerpiece of his
evolutionary theory,” Bornstein said. “So, it was logical
for students in the course to know Darwin first.”
The coursework incorporated reading and analysis
of texts including a special issue of Natural History
magazine on Darwin’s work and modern evolutionary
theory, as well as Jonathan Weiner’s Pulitzer Prize–
winning The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our
Time. Bornstein thought that Weiner’s book provided
“The most brilliant and graceful bird is the Frigatebird.
They constantly followed us on our voyage aboard
our ship, the Floreana, flying off our draft, and they
were everywhere on the island of North Seymour.
The Magnificent Frigatebird’s courtship displays
are amazing to watch, and to me they look just like
humans trying to get the attention of girls in a club.
The male Frigatebird has a huge red throat sac that he
inflates over about a 20-minute period. This enlarged
throat or gular sac shows the females who fly overhead
that the males are ‘single’ and looking for a
mate. They flap their beaks against this sac making
the strangest noise. They spread their enormous wings
(about seven feet across) and flap them strenuously.
The soaring females are looking for a male with the
‘most red’ throat or the longest wingspan.”
the perfect initiation into what the students would be
setting out to accomplish.
“The Beak of the Finch follows a husband-and-wife
research team, the Grants, who have spent twenty years
in the Galapagos observing finches in order to study
how natural selection plays itself out in the real world,”
Bornstein said. “Their observations, their study of
the environment was very similar to what we hoped
students would be doing as we hiked on the islands
ourselves.”
While still in the planning stages, the teachers
knew that they would end the course with a traditional
term paper but also wanted to encourage students to
hone their observational skills in the field. Students
would eventually record their Galapagos experiences
in a daily journal that incorporated writing and
photography.
Determining which students would get to
participate in this unique course was carefully thought
about, as well. Bornstein and Wolbers designed an
application to learn about students’ interest in the
summer elective and help narrow the field if needed.
“We knew we wanted kids connected to biology,”
Bornstein said. “We were thrilled and felt fortunate
that all the students who applied were ready for the
challenge.”
Four rising juniors and two rising sophomores
submitted applications in December 2005, and all six
were accepted for the course. Juniors Mae Carlson,
Charlie Cullen, Sophia Porotsky, and Reid Pierce and
sophomores Park Cannon and Hillary Dalldorf all
gladly met the demands of the challenging course load.
Unfortunately, Wolbers broke her arm before the trip
and was unable to attend. A friend of Bornstein stepped
in at the last minute to help chaperone the group.
The days of the trip were filled with vigorous
physical activity in addition to the nonstop educational
experiences, an aspect that added to the overall appeal
of the class, according to Bornstein.
“We went on two hikes each day and one snorkeling
trip each day,” she said. “The boat was our home. The
days were packed with activities and exploring. I know
the students were exhausted at the end of each day, but
it was definitely worth the exhaustion.”
One of the most important lessons the students
learned while in Galapagos was how conservation is
viewed as paramount among the natives and visitors
alike. The students’ guide Jorge made it clear to
them and other visitors that respecting the natural
environment on the island meant looking but not
touching. This warning resonated even more when the
group witnessed some people violating the rule.
“One day our kids saw another guide with a tourist
group walking on sand dunes where the sea turtles lay
their eggs,” Bornstein recalled. “Jorge approached him
about this, but the guide ignored him. So Jorge, along
with another experienced guide, got the offender’s
information and told him that he was going to be
reported to the Park Service. The younger guide reined
in his tour group and got back on the well-marked
trail. It really reinforced this critical message with our
students. We were there as a privilege, but preserving
the natural environment and the habitats of so many
animals comes before anything else.”
Whether Big or Small, Poly
The Faculty Mentor/Mentee Program began several
years ago to help new teachers get acquainted with
the culture of the school and adjust to their new
environment. And just as Poly welcomes new teachers
each year, long-time faculty member Susan Beiles
welcomed a new position this year—dean of faculty.
In this role, she has taken on the Mentor/Mentee
Program and brings to it her years of experience.
“We want the mentor to be a safe harbor,” said
Beiles. “All new teachers have an academic mentor
in their respective departments, so the idea of the
mentor in this program is to provide new faculty
with someone who can help them get to know Poly
and provide a fresh perspective for the transition—
someone with whom they wouldn’t otherwise work
regularly.”
Beiles convened with Upper School head Bud
Cox and Middle School head Larry Patton ’82 to put
together this year’s pairs. One very successful match
is veteran Poly science teacher Bobbie Swain and her
mentee, English teacher Marisa Gomez. New to Poly
and to New York, Gomez arrived just last summer, not
long before meeting Swain for an introductory lunch.
“We met at Chadwick’s—my favorite restaurant,”
said Swain. “I was looking forward to the opportunity
to get to know Marisa and talk a bit about Poly before
school began. I was glad that we got along so well.”
This was Swain’s first year to formally act as a
mentor, but she’s no stranger to providing teachers
with much-needed assistance. This is her twentyfourth
year at Poly and her thirty-seventh year
teaching, so she has definitely had time to develop
strategies for managing the various aspects of the
job—an element that figured into Beiles’s plan.
“Our approach acknowledges that not all teachers
new to Poly need exactly the same thing, so we try to
pair people based on specific needs and strengths,”
she said. “Bobbie is very outgoing and is comfortable
sharing what she knows about Poly, and we thought
that would make her a perfect fit for someone like
Marisa, who has a lot of teaching experience but was
new to our school.”
At the start of the school year, Gomez was new to the
city, but she brought 14 years of teaching experience
to Poly. She came from Trinity Valley School, a K–12,
co-ed, college prep school in Ft. Worth, Texas, so
she was already familiar with the country day school
environment. She felt at ease with Swain immediately
and thought that their relationship exceeded her
expectations.
“I have been a mentor myself, both to brand new
teachers and to experienced ones who’ve come from
another state, so I can appreciate what Bobbie is
trying to do,” Gomez said. “I understand the need for
the relationship, and she does, too. It’s great to have
someone I can go to with questions.”
The two continue to meet regularly at the scheduled
monthly meetings required of the program, and they
sneak in a quick informal meeting from time to time.
Due in part to Swain’s help, Gomez felt she had settled
in perfectly to both her in-school and out-of-school
surroundings at the mid-year mark.
“Just before winter break I became comfortable
with the routine—all of it, the parts specific to Poly
and the other New York aspects, like navigating the
subways and walking everywhere,” Gomez said.
“Upon first coming here, I instinctively felt that Poly
was a good place for me professionally; I felt I could fit
in and contribute. I would say that Bobbie has been
great support for that transition.”
he Mansion can seem big and daunting to some
of Poly’s littlest, but teachers helped them start the
year off right by matching up youngsters with older
counterparts for a regular activity called Buddy Time.
A favorite component of the Lower School
Community Time assemblies, Buddy Time involves
students pairing off in twos for encounters designed
to build social skills. Pre-K students are matched
with first graders, and kindergarteners with second
graders. Nursery students buddy-up with others in
their class.
Teachers organize activities for these special
meetings that allow older students opportunities to
lead and encourage younger students to learn from
the big kids.
“The older children are embracing and protective,
and the younger children made to feel so special and
important,” said Kindergarten A head teacher Risa
Novikoff.
Together buddies build with blocks, read to
each other, and meet up for special holiday fun. For
Valentine’s Day, students created a friendship quilt
and made valentines with friendly messages for their
buddies. One very popular Buddy Time had students
drawing their buddies’ portraits.
The special friendships created extend beyond
Buddy Time. “Even when we are not officially
together, as they pass each other’s classroom, they
call in greetings and wave to each other as they pass
in the hallway,” Novikoff said. “The experience is
the embodiment of our work focusing on respect and
caring, and celebrating what is truly most important
in life.”
CONSTRUCTIVE
EDUCATION
lower School Students
Can’t Wait for the
new Addition to the Mansion—
they’re learning from It now
by Laura Butchy
As progress continues on the
Lower School construction project
and the hum of machinery greets
students on their way to school,
the work outside also plays a role
inside—it’s a teaching tool.
The flurry of construction
has captured the imaginations
of Nursery and Kindergarten
students, and teachers have
used the opportunity to develop
construction curricula.
“Both Kindergarten classes
are visiting the site, talking to the
foreman, and documenting what
they see with drawings,” explained
Kindergarten B teacher
Laurie Green.
After one visit to the
construction site,
Kindergarten B
children made
a list of what
they saw:
a cement
truck, an
excavator,
a digger,
bricks, a broken wall, a
cement bucket, rocks,
dust, dirt, a big hole,
wood, a hood on the
bucket, and a man in a
truck. The students also
made pencil drawings
of what they observed.
Though the work isn’t
audible from the classroom, they
sometimes observe the action
out the window and discuss what
they see happening and what the
workers have to know to do the
things they do.
“We visit at least once a week,
sometimes twice,” Green said.
“We work in the room to recreate
what they are seeing outside.”
In addition to drawing, Green
has had the children focus some
of their block building on the
construction. After watching the
cement mixer out their window,
the children built a cement mixer,
an excavator, and the school’s wall
out of blocks.
Kindergarten A began the
year by drawing pictures of how
they imagined the new building
will look. Activities since then
have included block building
and discussion of what the new
building will bring the students.
“We recently read A House for
Hermit Crab, by Eric Carle,” added
Risa Novikoff, Kindergarten A
head teacher. “This is a story of
how the hermit crab outgrows
his old shell and searches for a
new and larger one. The children
are very astute and were able to
compare the
crab’s need
to our own
for a larger
and more
suitable
facility to
thrive and
learn in.”
Nursery students have begun to
appreciate the construction as
well. Irwin Tawil has read quite
a few books about construction
machinery to his Nursery B class,
such as Mike Mulligan and His
Steam Shovel.
“We’ve gone to the site several
times, taken pictures, and studied
the machinery that they’re using,”
Tawil said. The class has checked
on the construction’s progress
weekly, either in person or
through the window. They’ve also
collected dirt and rocks from the
yard to use in their sand table.
Two Great Poly Endeavors,
Both the Poly Store and Poly Archives reached milestones in 2006 —they got their own employees
Eileen Avvocato P’12 has settled
comfortably into her new role as
Poly’s first paid Store manager.
Her position, which includes
managing the Store, monitoring
attendance, and distributing
books, was created by Poly’s
Business Office last spring. The
arrangement provides Poly with a
knowledgeable employee familiar
with the school to help the Store
achieve one of its primary goals:
providing a place for students to
purchase supplies during school
hours. While her daughter only
started at Poly a few short years
ago, Avvocato’s history with the
school goes back many years—a
fact that makes her new position
extra-special.
“I was born and raised in
Brooklyn, and my brothers
graduated from Poly in the
seventies,” Avvocato said. “My
mother was always very involved
in volunteering here, and
although I didn’t go here, I always
wanted my daughter to come to
Poly. I knew when she did that I
would definitely volunteer, too.”
And volunteer she did. Prior
to holding the Store manager
position, Avvocato worked with
other moms to help get the
venture up and running.
Store cofounder and former
Parents’ Association president
Jo-Ann Kalb P’08 said there were
several objectives behind the
Store’s development. In 2005,
she and cofounder Janet Krombar
P’06 noticed that while there was
a lot of Poly merchandise available
at various events, there was no
centralized location from which it
could be purchased. Kalb then met
Avvocato, who said that if a store
was created, she would gladly
volunteer.
Another initial goal was to
provide additional funding for
student activities on campus. As
the Store has evolved into a joint
venture between Poly and the
Parents’ Association, the profit
structure has evolved to distribute
funds to even more areas. Onethird
of the Store’s profits goes
to student enrichment activities,
one-third goes to student clubs,
and one-third goes to athletics.
Always bustling with activity,
the Poly Store now resides in
room 014, across from the girls’
locker room. While Avvocato
manages the location during
the week, she often opens the
Store at satellite locations during
special events, like Homecoming.
During these times, the Store
relies on volunteers to help keep it
adequately staffed.
Avvocato said there are great
things ahead for the Store in the
coming months. She recently
completed inventory on the entire
stock and is currently turning her
attention toward ordering new
merchandise and making all of it
available online.
“It’s really exciting,” Avvocato
said. “I’ve been getting calls from
alums wanting to know if we’re
online, and I’m so glad I can say
that soon we will be!”
Two Dedicated Poly Moms
In 2006, Ann-Marie Werner
gladly added “archivist” to her list
of titles. The Parents’ Association
Middle School vice president and
proud mother of four (Justin ’06,
Annie ’10, Sarah ’11, Charlotte ’13)
is very familiar with the school’s
ins and outs and seems perfectly
suited to the part-time position
created especially for her in the
vast and growing Poly Archives.
“I had wanted to return to
work, but most of the opportunities
I found needed a fulltime
commitment,” Werner said.
“I’m the primary caregiver for
my parents, and because of that I
really needed something flexible.
So, one day Robert Aberlin
brought up that the school needed
someone to work in the Archives
part-time, and it all came alive.
We were on exactly the same
wavelength.”
Werner’s first weeks on the
job were spent working with
Rachael Myers of the Winthrop
Group, an archival management
firm. Myers had been working in
the Archives for over a year when
Werner was brought on board, and
the reciprocal relationship the two
developed proved very beneficial.
“It has been great for me to
be able to work with Rachael.
She has been getting me up to
speed on everything we have and
teaching me how to properly treat
the materials,” Werner said. “And
because I have my own knowledge
of the school, while Rachael
shows me materials, I can actually
identify teachers and other
people.”
A lot of progress has been
made on simply getting the bulk
of Poly’s artifacts under one
roof. Currently, the materials on
campus fill three rooms. As the
archives are catalogued, they will
eventually reside in the beautiful
space designated on the third
floor of the Alumni House. In this
room, a plaque honors Patricia
Gauvey P’03, ’05, chair of Poly’s
Sesquicentennial Celebration,
who, along with Aberlin, originally
championed the idea of having a
formal Poly Archives and worked
hard to make it a reality. Werner
definitely feels like a beneficiary
of these efforts.
“Even when my kids were new
to the school, I just immediately
loved it here. The parents are
smart people with great kids,”
Werner said. “Pat Gauvey did
tremendous work to get the
Archives off the ground, and
I’m so glad I get to be a part of it.
Every day I find new treasures.”
When he’s not at Poly, Joe Calabrese ’11 throws a mean fastball for Staten
Island’s Mid-Island All-Stars. But beyond his exceptional pitching,
Calabrese made news last summer for his outstanding acts of
sportsmanship.
In the game that sent them to the Little League World Series
in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Calabrese and teammates bested
competitors from Livingston, New Jersey. As the boys from Staten
Island took their victory lap, they stopped midway through, and
Calabrese told the other team, “You guys go
first,” inviting them to lead the celebratory
run around the field and past the bleachers
full of fans. Steve Politi of the New Jersey
Star-Ledger wrote a piece dedicated to
this act and called it “as valuable as
the trip to Williamsport.”
When the All-Stars lost
their final game in the series,
Calabrese stepped in again
to console a teammate
visibly saddened by the
loss. This deed also
captured the attention
of the local press.
Poly baseball
coach Matt Roventini
’92 said he was
not surprised at
the news, as
Calabrese regularly
demonstrates good
character both on
and off the field.
“Joe is not only an
player but a hard
worker and great
teammate,” he said.
A Tribute to Teachers
Too often the obvious is
overlooked or forgotten. So,
sometimes the obvious merits
repeating.
My wife, Anne, teaches at Hackley.
I have attended her classes, and I have
a file of letters from her students and
from parents of her students thanking
her, in the case of the parents, for what
she has done for their children, and in
the case of her students, for what she
has done for them.
I tell Anne and her colleagues
that they do more for mankind in one
day than I, as a lawyer, have done in a
lifetime.
It is said that if you can’t do, you
teach. What an arrogant, condescending
concept! Teaching is doing! Teachers
are the infrastructure of our educational
system; they are the foundation of
progress. They deserve our thanks,
respect, and applause as much, if not
more so, than the captains of business
and the presidents, princes, and
potentates; for without the teachers,
there would be few of them.
The best investment a nation
can make is in the education of its
children. And one of the essential
responsibilities of the parents of those
children is to instill in them a work
From the Chairman of the Board:
0
A significant indication of a school’s strength
is its ability to sustain philanthropic support.
In these pages, we have the opportunity to
recognize the generosity and philanthropy
of our alumni, parents, and friends through
the success of the Annual Fund and other
fundraising initiatives.
Thankfully, the commitment to provide
students at Poly Prep with an outstanding
independent school education continues, as
it has for more than 150 years. Support in the
Poly Prep community is strong and growing.
This support is what allows us to embrace and
uphold excellence and to chart a course for
ongoing success. For those who have served in
a volunteer capacity in a fundraising event, we
are indebted to you for your loyalty, time, and
effort.
My final words are simple: Thank you. Thank
you on behalf of the board of trustees and on
behalf of the faculty and administration that
continue to make this a great school. It is your
generosity, your enthusiasm for our mission,
and your commitment to Poly Prep—its students and their education—that makes all of this possible. For this
we are truly grateful.
Sincerely,
0
The 2005–2006 school year was an
exciting one at Poly Prep. Building on
the success of our Sesquicentennial
celebration, we enjoyed exceptional
attendance by alumni, parents, faculty,
staff, and friends for Homecoming in
the fall and Special Reunion Day in the
spring. In addition to attending these
and many other festive activities on
both campuses, hundreds of parent
volunteers offered their time and
talents to assist Poly’s various student
groups and activities.
Alumni and parents also
demonstrated their enthusiasm for
Poly with generous financial support,
which shows the commitment of
our community to Poly’s mission:
to prepare students for college and
for life by fostering learning, health,
leadership, community responsibility,
and above all, character.
The true beneficiaries of this support
are, of course, our diverse and talented students. Your contributions also sustain Poly’s remarkable and
dedicated faculty, allowing our teachers to grow professionally and further develop the myriad programs and
activities that enrich our students’ education. Together, we prepare our capable students to make a difference
in an ever-changing world.
Thank you for supporting Poly Prep. Your ongoing generosity and loyalty are deeply appreciated.
Sincerely,
David B. Harman
The Poly Prep Annual Fund is the cornerstone of all fundraising at Poly Prep. The Annual Fund
generates revenue that supports the operating budget, providing vital support for core activities and new program
development. Gifts to the Annual Fund support all of Poly’s diverse programs and facilities, helping us to provide
for financial aid, student and faculty programs, and improvements to campus facilities and technology.
As is true of most independent schools, tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students.
Every year, devoted Poly parents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff, and friends support the Annual Fund,
helping to close that gap. Your gift helps fulfill Poly’s mission to prepare students for college and for life by
fostering learning, health, leadership, community responsibility, and, above all, character.
Gifts are tax-deductible, and you will receive an acknowledgment by mail from the Development Office
for your records. If you have not received an acknowledgement of your gift, please contact ncadogan@polyprep.org.
Contributions to the Annual Fund may be made via credit card, check, or stock gifts. You may make credit
card gifts online at www.polyprep.org/common/giving/default.asp or by calling (718) 836-9800, ext. 382. Checks
may be mailed to:
The Senior Class Gift program,
established in 1980, contributes
to the Faculty Development Fund
each year. This Fund enables Poly
to send teachers to professional
development programs,
encouraging faculty members to
further their academic studies and
learn about new perspectives on
curriculum and classroom practice.
Last year’s Senior Class Gift also
supported the renovation of the
trophy room, which now provides
Poly’s accomplishments with an
impressive and welcoming home.
and people whom I otherwise wouldn’t have met, and this really broadened my horizons and made me a
more complete person.
are people to help and support me. No matter what you look like,
where you come from, how much money you have, or how smart
you are, you will always be accepted.
There’s more to Poly than just the amazing campus and great
facilities. Really at the heart of Poly are the people that make
up Poly, from heads of departments to the maintenance crew.
Everyone matters, everyone is family, and that is evident. There is
really no better place to be with so much support and such a strong
value for community and spirit.
What I think makes Poly such a special place is the maintenance of 150-year-old traditions while
continually changing to adjust with the times. As my senior year draws to a close, I am really comforted
to realize that all the teachers who have watched me grow in the past have stepped up to ensure that I
am able to fulfill my full potential in college. I know that no matter where I go to college, with the strong
foundation of Poly Prep behind me, I will succeed.
When I first came to Poly, I thought it was a big scary school with other kids who were going to make fun
of me. But once I had been in class for five minutes, I felt like I had been there all my life. All the teachers
are fair, and they give us confidence to learn more and more each day.
The class that has meant the most to me is my ninth grade history
class with Mr. DeJesus. We learned a lot about world history, but
we spent most of the classes studying the evolution of thought and
morals. It really made me step back and think about our society.
