It was a night like no other. Poly had had some great celebrations before, but never in its 152 years had anything of this magnitude ever taken place. An Evening with Friends was a chameleon. It was a night of remembrance, a night of fundraising for a very worthy cause, and—quite fittingly—a night of both laughter and tears. More than 350 Poly alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends gathered at Cipriani 42nd Street for the big event on Wednesday, September 6, 2006. The community paid tribute to Poly’s ten alumni and one parent lost on September 11 and raised more than $250,000 to benefit Poly’s September 11 Memorial Scholarship Fund that honors them. Mistress of Ceremonies and Poly parent Rosanna Scotto P’12 opened the event with remarks on Poly’s strong sense of community and how crucial it was in the wake of the September 11 tragedy. These sentiments were echoed throughout the evening, even by New York Governor George Pataki, who dropped in to make a brief but powerful statement about the City’s enduring commitment to freedom. Celebrated actress and Poly parent Meryl Streep P’04, ’09 provided a videotaped welcome to the evening’s festivities, and Poly’s beloved headmaster emeritus William M. Williams offered the invocation.
