Everybody wants to be happy, but what is it that will make you happy? Are you sure you know? That may sound to you like a silly question, but remember that many people are unhappy precisely because they do not really know what it is they want in life. I have worked with many unhappy people who, when BOB GARON asked what is it that would make you happy, could not come up with a credible answer. I use the word “credible” because their answers are so general (“I just want to be happy”, or “I want to be PEOPLE loved or “I don’t want to be poor”) that they amount to nothing, to not knowing what they want. It isn’t surprising then that they are unhappy. If you want to be happy you have to know what it is that will make you happy and then go for it. Stephen Covey says it this way: “Happiness can be defined, at least in part, as the fruit of the desire and the ability to sacrifice what we want now for what we want eventually.” In short, formulate a goal that you believe will give you satisfaction (happiness) and then pay the price by sacrificing and working towards the goal. Eventually, your hard work and sacrifices will pay off and you will experience the happiness you sought. You cannot expect to wander around in circles, like a chicken without a head, and hope to bump into happiness somewhere in the process. That would be like playing the lottery and expecting to win the jackpot. Won’t happen. But then, there are people who want to believe just that. They want to be happy while doing nothing to make it happen. It’s what is called magical thinking. One of my clients who was into magical thinking put in this way, “It is because I think it is”. Needless to say that she was one very unhappy woman. If you want to be happy, don’t be like that. Don’t expect happiness to come running to you. You have to make up your mind about what you want (to be a doctor, a nurse a whatever) and then be prepared to pay the price for your happiness. Remember that the happiest people are those who worked the hardest to overcome the greatest challenges and gain the deepest satisfaction. The harder the struggle, the greater the victory. So make up your mind about what you want. Then, go for it. Believe. And just do it. On their third fulllength studio release, the luscious, multi-layered Plastic Beach, the cartoon band aims for a more pop-oriented approach to their trademark rhythms. Enlisting the services of collaborators, including Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Bobby Womack and Lou Reed, the entire album is a sonic trip that works inside a car on a long meandering road trip as much as it does on the club floor. Clearly the musical well hasn’t dried up for Albarn; on the contrary, while there are themes of unhampered consumerism and environmental degradation, the organic and club-friendly beats they use make this perhaps their most commercially accessible release yet.
