Please note the days of the following activities:
Library days
We visit the library on the following days. Please ensure
your child brings their library book in their bag on these
days so they can choose a new book to share with you at
home.
Class 10: Thursday

PE days
Reception do PE on the following days. Please ensure your
child has their complete kit at school so they can participate
-details of correct kit are displayed on class noticeboards.

Curriculum Overview - Term 4, 2012-2013
In Nursery and Reception we follow the 2012 Development
Matters guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage.
We help children develop skills and confidence in seven Areas of
Learning and Development. Each term we base our activities
around a Core Book. This term our Core Book is
This Overview summarises the Early Learning Goals for the end
of Reception and lists some of the activities we have planned for
Nursery and / or Reception this term. Actual activities will vary
according to the children's developmental needs and interests.

Development
The Early Learning Goals (ELGs) for
the end of Reception are to:
Play cooperatively, take turns, take
account of others’ ideas, needs &
feelings.
Form positive relationships.
Develop confidence to speak in a
group, talk about ideas, try new
activities, choose resources & ask for
help if needed.
Talk about feelings, behaviour & its
consequences.
Work as part of a group. Understand
& follow expectations.
Our activities will help the children
work towards these goals, linking with
our Core Book where appropriate, e.g.
teamwork and cooperation activities -
like ants and bees!
Communication & Language
The ELGs are to:
Listen & respond appropriately in a
range of situations.
Anticipate important events in stories
& respond in a variety of ways.
Answer ‘how’ & ‘why’ questions.
Express themselves effectively, with
awareness of those listening.
Talk about past, present & future
events & connect ideas & events.
Our activities will help the children
work towards these goals, linking with
our Core Book where appropriate e.g.
discussing the story, talking about
butterflies and other insects.
Physical Development
The ELGs are to:
Demonstrate control &
coordination.
Move in a variety of ways.
Handle equipment & tools
effectively.
Understand how to keep healthy &
safe.
Manage basic hygiene & personal
needs.
Activities planned include using markmaking
tools, scissors & needles,
construction, small & large equipment
e.g. climbing frames, obstacles, stilts,
hoops, balls & bean bags health, as
well as safety & hygiene activities &
weekly PE (Reception). Some will
relate to our Book e.g. insect
movements, leap frog, related markmaking,
writing and drawing (e.g.
garden centre shopping lists, insect
drawings & books) & using malleable
materials (e.g. salt dough insects).
Literacy
The ELGs are to:
Use phonic knowledge to read &
write some regular words & simple
sentences.
Read & write some common
irregular words.
Understand what they have read.
Activities planned include weekly
library visits; daily Letters & Sounds
activities (Nursery); guided reading
& daily Read Write Inc. phonics
sessions (Reception). Activities will
link with our Core Book where
appropriate e.g. making insect
books, labeling insects, rewriting
The Very Hungry Caterpillar story,
writing garden centre shopping lists,
writing Caterpillar Diaries re: how
our EYFS caterpillars change.
Mathematics
The ELGs are to:
Count, order & say 1 more & 1 less to
20.
Solve problems involving doubling,
halving, sharing, size, weight, money,
capacity, position, distance & time.
Recognise, create & describe
patterns.
Use mathematical language to
describe shapes of everyday objects.
Activities planned include counting
(e.g. insect hunts, making worm
snakes & ladders boards), estimating,
one more & one less, positional
language (e.g. movement of insects);
capacity, shape (e.g. patterns on
insects, shapes in nature) & problemsolving
activities (e.g. how many
leaves to feed the EYFS caterpillars).
Also weights, pulleys, etc.
Understanding the World
The ELGs are to:
Talk about past & present events in
own lives.
Know about & be sensitive to
differences in people, places, objects,
materials, living things &
environments.
Observe animals, plants & change.
Be aware of & select a range of
technology.
Activities planned include visiting the
Junior’s pond; caring for the EYFS
caterpillars & environment; learning
about change though non-fiction
books; making insect pictures using
ICT; lifecycle, insect & frog small world
and puzzles; sand and water play;
sequencing lifecycles with pictures &
props; making a wormery; exploring
magnification and texture.
Expressive Arts & Design
The ELGs are to:
Sing, make music & change songs
& music.
Explore materials, tools &
techniques.
Use what they have learnt in
original ways.
Represent ideas through design &
technology, art, music, dance, role
-play & stories.
Activities planned include making
insect paintings, spider web and
worm trail patterns, stuffed tights
caterpillars, dragonfly models, role
play masks, honeycomb printing,
handprint butterfly pictures, snail
spiral pictures and insect headbands
as well as singing insect
songs and using the Garden
Centre, Grocers & Jungle Role Play
Areas.
