We visit the library on the following days. Please ensure<br />

your child brings their library book in their bag on these<br />

days so they can choose a new book to share with you at<br />

home.<br />

Curriculum Overview - Term 4, 2012-2013<br />

In Nursery and Reception we follow the 2012 Development<br />

Matters guidance for the <strong>Early</strong> <strong>Years</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Stage</strong>.<br />

We help children develop skills and confidence in seven Areas of<br />

Learning and Development. Each term we base our activities<br />

around a Core Book. This term our Core Book is<br />

This Overview summarises the <strong>Early</strong> Learning Goals for the end<br />

of Reception and lists some of the activities we have planned for<br />

Nursery and / or Reception this term. Actual activities will vary<br />

according to the children's developmental needs and interests.<br />

The <strong>Early</strong> Learning Goals (ELGs) for<br />

the end of Reception are to:<br />

Play cooperatively, take turns, take<br />

account of others’ ideas, needs &<br />

feelings.<br />

Form positive relationships.<br />

Develop confidence to speak in a<br />

group, talk about ideas, try new<br />

activities, choose resources & ask for<br />

help if needed.<br />

Talk about feelings, behaviour & its<br />

consequences.<br />

Work as part of a group. Understand<br />

& follow expectations.<br />

Our activities will help the children<br />

work towards these goals, linking with<br />

our Core Book where appropriate, e.g.<br />

teamwork and cooperation activities -<br />

like ants and bees!<br />

Communication & Language<br />

The ELGs are to:<br />

Listen & respond appropriately in a<br />

range of situations.<br />

Anticipate important events in stories<br />

& respond in a variety of ways.<br />

Our activities will help the children<br />

work towards these goals, linking with<br />

our Core Book where appropriate e.g.<br />

discussing the story, talking about<br />

butterflies and other insects.<br />

Physical Development<br />

The ELGs are to:<br />

Move in a variety of ways.<br />

Handle equipment & tools<br />

effectively.<br />

Understand how to keep healthy &<br />

Manage basic hygiene & personal<br />

Activities planned include using markmaking<br />

tools, scissors & needles,<br />

construction, small & large equipment<br />

e.g. climbing frames, obstacles, stilts,<br />

hoops, balls & bean bags health, as<br />

well as safety & hygiene activities &<br />

weekly PE (Reception). Some will<br />

relate to our Book e.g. insect<br />

movements, leap frog, related markmaking,<br />

writing and drawing (e.g.<br />

garden centre shopping lists, insect<br />

drawings & books) & using malleable<br />

materials (e.g. salt dough insects).<br />

Literacy<br />

The ELGs are to:<br />

Use phonic knowledge to read &<br />

write some regular words & simple<br />

sentences.<br />

Read & write some common<br />

irregular words.<br />

Understand what they have read.<br />

Activities planned include weekly<br />

library visits; daily Letters & Sounds<br />

activities (Nursery); guided reading<br />

& daily Read Write Inc. phonics<br />

sessions (Reception). Activities will<br />

link with our Core Book where<br />

appropriate e.g. making insect<br />

books, labeling insects, rewriting<br />

The Very Hungry Caterpillar story,<br />

writing garden centre shopping lists,<br />

writing Caterpillar Diaries re: how<br />

our EYFS caterpillars change.<br />

Mathematics<br />

The ELGs are to:<br />

Count, order & say 1 more & 1 less to<br />

20.<br />

Solve problems involving doubling,<br />

halving, sharing, size, weight, money,<br />

capacity, position, distance & time.<br />

Recognise, create & describe<br />

patterns.<br />

Use mathematical language to<br />

describe shapes of everyday objects.<br />

Activities planned include counting<br />

(e.g. insect hunts, making worm<br />

snakes & ladders boards), estimating,<br />

one more & one less, positional<br />

language (e.g. movement of insects);<br />

capacity, shape (e.g. patterns on<br />

insects, shapes in nature) & problemsolving<br />

activities (e.g. how many<br />

leaves to feed the EYFS caterpillars).<br />

Also weights, pulleys, etc.<br />

Understanding the World<br />

The ELGs are to:<br />

Talk about past & present events in<br />

own lives.<br />

Know about & be sensitive to<br />

differences in people, places, objects,<br />

materials, living things &<br />

environments.<br />

Observe animals, plants & change.<br />

Be aware of & select a range of<br />

technology.<br />

Activities planned include visiting the<br />

Junior’s pond; caring for the EYFS<br />

caterpillars & environment; learning<br />

about change though non-fiction<br />

books; making insect pictures using<br />

ICT; lifecycle, insect & frog small world<br />

and puzzles; sand and water play;<br />

sequencing lifecycles with pictures &<br />

props; making a wormery; exploring<br />

magnification and texture.<br />

Expressive Arts & Design<br />

The ELGs are to:<br />

Sing, make music & change songs<br />

& music.<br />

Explore materials, tools &<br />

techniques.<br />

Use what they have learnt in<br />

original ways.<br />

Represent ideas through design &<br />

technology, art, music, dance, role<br />

-play & stories.<br />

Activities planned include making<br />

insect paintings, spider web and<br />

worm trail patterns, stuffed tights<br />

caterpillars, dragonfly models, role<br />

play masks, honeycomb printing,<br />

handprint butterfly pictures, snail<br />

spiral pictures and insect headbands<br />

as well as singing insect<br />

songs and using the Garden<br />

Centre, Grocers & Jungle Role Play<br />

Areas.
