Identification
Unisafe and other staff may call for reasonable
identification of any person within the building
at any time. Unisafe staff are specifically
authorised to require any student to produce
an identity card on request. A person unable
to produce satisfactory identification may be
required to leave the building.
Lockers
Lockers are available for use by students in
the building. Please contact the Auckland
University Engineering Society (AUES) for
information on renting a locker, rm. 2.306
Level 3 Engineering Building.
Noticeboards,
Communication, Student
Services Stall
Emails
Staff-student and student-student written
communication is affected by using email and
notice boards. Each student is allocated a
University email address. The University and
the Faculty use these addresses to contact
all postgraduate students with important
information about scholarships, submission
deadlines and other matters. You should check
your University email account regularly to
pick up such messages and, if you are using a
personal email address, set up your University
email Inbox to redirect such messages to the
personal address.
Notice Boards
There are notice boards in Level 3 of the
Engineering Building for engineering students.
There is also a notice board to announce job
vacancies. Other noticeboards in Level 3 are
for AUES (Auckland University Engineering
Society), WEN (Women in Engineering),
SPIES (South Pacific Indigenous Engineering
Students), KESA (Hong Kong Engineering
Students Association). Each department also
has a noticeboard near the Departmental
Office and there are others in various places
around the Faculty.
These are to display such things as results
of tests, worked solutions to problems,
job opportunities and information about
postgraduate study.
Computing Facilities
Postgraduate students starting their
programmes at the beginning of each
semester in Engineering will have a computer
account created for them as long as their
enrolment has been completed correctly.
Students should login to their account using
their UPI and NetAccount password. If
students commence mid semester, or for
some reason find their account has not been
created automatically, they should approach
their departmental computer administrators
to create an account. A list of computer
administrators can be found on the notice
boards in the general Faculty lab (rm 1.301)
or online at
http://www.engineering.auckland.ac.nz/
Studentinfo/ComputerResources/labstaff.htm
Some departments provide dedicated
computers to postgraduate students and again
your departmental administrators should be
able to advise students on available resources
at their disposal. Postgraduates are also
welcome to use the computers in the general
Faculty labs, especially the drop in areas, for
casual work, but these computers are not to
be tied up running unattended simulations
that take hours.
Swipe cards for 24 hour access to Faculty
labs can be obtained from the Engineering
reception
The use of computer resources is governed
by the Computer System Statute as set out
in the University of Auckland Calendar and
Information Security Policies at:
http://www.auckland.ac.nz/security/
PoliciesandStatutes.htm as well as those
displayed in the computer laboratories.
Failure to observe these rules may result in
withdrawal of access and disciplinary action
taken.
Rules Governing the Use
of the Faculty’s Computer
Laboratories
We endeavour to provide a productive
environment in all our Faculty laboratories,
and ask that all our users help us with
achieving this. We ask that everyone work
quietly, using only software provided from the
network, and that they restrict their work to
that relevant to their studies.
General group work and non computer
based work should not be done in any of
the computer labs but rather in the large
study areas provided within the Engineering
buildings.
Laboratory staff are keen to maintain a good
friendly atmosphere within the labs and we
would ask all users to conduct themselves
in a polite and courteous manner. Please
remember that the staff are not there merely
to respond immediately to your particular
problems, however serious they may appear
to you, but to facilitate the productivity of all
Faculty IT users.
All users of the laboratories are subject to the
‘Computer System Statute’ as set out in the
University of Auckland Calendar ‘Acceptable
Use Policies’ defined by the University, and any
conditions of use displayed in the computer
labs. Breaches of these or other specific
Engineering Computer Laboratory rules, as
listed below, may result in disciplinary action.
This could include the withdrawal of account
access and/or print balances as well as a ban
from the laboratories, loss of assignment
marks, or referral to the University Discipline
Committee with a possible consequent fine,
or expulsion from courses or the University.
• Food or drink MUST NOT be brought
into the labs for any reason.
• Users MUST keep the labs quiet and tidy
when they are working in the labs.
• Users MUST use computer facilities only
as instructed by lecturers.
• Computers MUST NOT be used
for anything other than Engineering
coursework.
• No-one is allowed to use, or attempt to
use, any computer accounts other than
their own.
• Users MUST NOT interfere with the
normal operational controls in the system
or try to alter the default system names
or settings. Systems must be left running in
the state in which they are found.
• Users MUST NOT attempt to overcome
any system imposed controls or limits.
• Unauthorised programs of any sort
MUST NOT be installed and run onto any
computers in the labs
• Software or data on Faculty computers
SHOULD NOT be copies, altered or
removed.
• Copies of other people’s files and
materials MUST NOT be made without
written authority subject to the Copyright
Act 1994.
