• Before leaving a machine work should
be saved and the user logged off. It will
be assumed that any machine found
unattended has been finished with and
it will be shut down or passed over to
another user where people are waiting for
access. No attempt will be made to save
any current work.
Laptop computers that are connected into
the network MUST only be used in specifically
designated areas. No existing equipment
may be unplugged from the network for any
reason, and nor may laptop computers be
plugged into sockets intended for existing lab
equipment.
Users MUST provide proof of identity if
requested by laboratory staff, and promptly
comply with all reasonable requests made
individually or to a group.
Please refer to the Computer Resources
pages of the Undergraduate section of the
Faculty website www.engineering,.auckland.
ac.nz and to the Technical Support section
in the Current Students area of the central
University website for more information these
and other issues surrounding computer use.
Lab Opening Hours and
Availability
Student work areas open 8am-6pm Mon. to
Fri. during semesters except Public holidays,
8am-5pm at other times.
Teaching labs open 8.30am-5pm Mon. to Fri.
Card access available for Labs 1.301, 1.306,
3.409 and 3.412. An Access Card can be
obtained through Engineering Administration
Office on the 4th floor in Building 402. The
card controls ENTRY AND EXIT to and
from the computer labs and Engineering
buildings. The access restriction times are
defined on the Card Application form.
Teaching Labs are unavailable for general
student use when classes are scheduled.
Please refer to notice boards or lab doors
for such times. Multimedia Room available
only by prebooking through Shane Thomson
in room 1.303. Staff members are available
8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday except public
and University holidays. It is important to note
that the labs can become extremely busy,
especially at peak times such as immediately
prior to assignment completion dates. Please
be considerate of others by not undertaking
unnecessary or frivolous activities, especially
while there are others waiting for a computer.
Please also note that no special consideration
can be given regarding lab use to students
who are behind on deadlines, so make sure
you organise your IT work in good time. We
would expect that all people using labs treat
them and the equipment they contain with
due respect, and leave everything in a neat
and working state.
Computer Accounts
Each student should have two login accounts,
which will normally use the same ID and
password.
Engineering Network Account (Novell
Account):
After login, a student should have access to
the software provided by the Engineering
Network and work on their assignments. Most
students will get at least 100 pages of free
printing per year from this account and extra
credit may be purchased from the Engineering
Administration Office, 4th floor in Building
402. The login to this account is your UPI and
the password syncs with the NetAccount
password. Note that password changes should
be made using NetAccount.
Net Account
Also called NetLogin. Every student will have
an account created. With NetAccount, a
student will be able to access their Webmail,
some university libraries’ databases, and the
Internet. They will also be able to print to
NetAccount printers. There are two separate
balances associated with NetAccount. One
balance is for internet and Webmail use, the
other is for NetAccount printing. Students
have to keep these balances positive to be
able to use these services. Extra credit can be
purchased from the Information Commons
Helpdesk. Note that NetAccount printing
is separate from the system used by most
Engineering departments, and balances are
non-transferable. ‘Netaccount’ printers are
available in the main Engineering computer
labs. Part I students who have enquiries about
their accounts should approach the laboratory
supervisors in room 3.410, 1.303 or 1.308. All
other students should refer to their respective
departmental administrators, a list of whom
are displayed on notice boards in the labs.
Printing To Engineering
Printers
Departments may allocate a certain amount
of credit on the network print system to be
used solely for the printing of engineering
coursework. It must be emphasised that this
is provided to allow normal coursework to
be completed. This credit is non-refundable
and any misuse of this allocation, including the
removal of paper from the labs ‘in lieu of
credits’, will be regarded as serious misconduct
and could result in the withdrawal of this
facility. Additional credit may be purchased
from the counter at the Engineering
Administration Office, and the receipt taken
to the appropriate department computer
representative. Alternatively it may be posted
in the Receipt Post Box in 1.301 next to the
notice board for entry into the system. This
box is only cleared twice a day, so please
check your printing credit in advance.
External Email and Web
Access
An Internet and email system is available
which allows free access to data across the
campus and allows students to pre-pay for
the use of external access. This access is
centrally administered; help and additional
information can be obtained from the
Electronic Campus HelpDesk in the Kate
Edgar Information Commons building on
level 4. Please read the information regarding
Netaccount on the notices in the labs, and
also check the information in the Student
IT Guide [see below] No one is to attempt
to make use of such external facilities from
a Faculty Laboratory computer except via
those systems through which they have
authorised access. Use of email and the Web
from Faculty laboratories must be confined
to work related activities. In particular, any
sending of obscene, defamatory or offensive
email material or messages, or the transfer
of non work related material to or from any
web site or newsgroup is expressly forbidden.
Any attempt to contact any other user or
site using a false or incorrect identity will be
considered an extremely serious offence. If
in doubt – check the website or ask Current
information regarding all of the above facilities
can be found in the ‘Undergraduates’ section
of the Faculty Website at www.engineering.
auckland.ac.nz, under ‘Computer Resources’.
Also ensure you are familiar with the Student
IT Guide. This is a document which is
distributed at the start of each year, and can
be obtained from the Library. It is also on the
main University website – look under ‘Current
Students’, in the ‘Technical Support’ section.
Safety Instruction
Students who are working in laboratories will
receive safety instructions. A copy of a Safety
Manual is held in every laboratory. First Aid
supplies are available in laboratories and from
the Engineering Student Centre.
A copy of the Safety Manual is available to all
new students. If you have not received your
copy by mid-March call at the Engineering
