Spiral Bevel Contact Patterns-Right<br />

<strong>the</strong> first Time<br />

What's <strong>the</strong> key piece of Arrow's highly accurate, closed-locp sys·<br />

tem for mak<strong>in</strong>g spiral bevel gears?<br />

"All <strong>the</strong> software," gear eng<strong>in</strong>eer Tom Miffl<strong>in</strong> says. R.AII that soft·<br />

ware is what makes everyth<strong>in</strong>g work."<br />

Miffl<strong>in</strong> should know; he manufactures spiral bevel gear teeth<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> system, which can create aerospace-quality spiral bevel<br />

gears with contact patterns that are right <strong>the</strong> first time.<br />

A.31·year employee, Miffl<strong>in</strong> is <strong>in</strong> charge of gear-tooth manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and contact pattern design for Arrow.<br />

The system itself consists of two Gleason Corp. mach<strong>in</strong>es, 6'<br />

Phoenix® gear cutter and a Phoenix gear gr<strong>in</strong>der, and a Zeiss/Hofler<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ate measur<strong>in</strong>g system. These blue and gray mach<strong>in</strong>es are<br />

scattered throughout <strong>the</strong> factory, sitt<strong>in</strong>g among green gear generators<br />

and gear checkers,<br />

Also, <strong>the</strong> system uses Gleason's CAGE,HOO f<strong>in</strong>ite 'element analysis<br />

[FEAt and G-AGE<strong>in</strong>spection analysis software.<br />

The software br<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong> scattered mach<strong>in</strong>es toge<strong>the</strong>r off <strong>the</strong> factory's<br />

cement floor, to computer screens <strong>in</strong> Miffl<strong>in</strong>'s carpeted office.<br />

Arrow bought <strong>the</strong> system's pieces over about 10 years. The last<br />

piece, <strong>the</strong> FEAsoftware, was bought <strong>in</strong> 2001. Before <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>the</strong> system<br />

had been operational for years, us<strong>in</strong>g loaded tooth contact analysis<br />

(TCA) software to design contact patterns.<br />

Even without <strong>the</strong> FEA software,though, Arrow twice manufactured<br />

spiral bevel gears with first-time, right-on contact patterns for a<br />

iet eng<strong>in</strong>e project <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1990s.<br />

The project started <strong>in</strong> 1998. Arrow had to manufacture two spiral<br />

bevel gear sets for <strong>the</strong> commercial aircraft jet eng<strong>in</strong>e, One set was for<br />

<strong>the</strong> tower shaft, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong> accessory gearbox.<br />

"The bevel gears manufactured by Arrow <strong>Gear</strong> performed excellently,"<br />

Roger Lev<strong>in</strong>e says. "The contact pattern was excellent, right<br />

where it was supposed to be:<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> project, Lev<strong>in</strong>e was II staff eng<strong>in</strong>eer on mechanical<br />

systems at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft <strong>in</strong> East Hartford, CT. He was also<br />

leader of <strong>the</strong> team for <strong>the</strong> project's tower shaft and ma<strong>in</strong> gearbox and<br />

was ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> spiral bevel gea.rs.<br />

lev<strong>in</strong>e says <strong>the</strong> contact pattern was "right on <strong>the</strong> money with <strong>the</strong><br />

first set of gears.R He adds that gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pattern right <strong>the</strong> first time<br />

isn't a normal th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his experience. lev<strong>in</strong>e has helped design and<br />

build five spiral bevel gear sets tor aircraft jet eng<strong>in</strong>e projects dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his 30-year career.<br />

Arrow also manufactured <strong>the</strong> spiral bevel g.earsfor <strong>the</strong> accsssory<br />

gearbox. That gearbox was be<strong>in</strong>g provided by Sundstrand Corp.<br />
