has taken a keen <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> a<br />
Swiss mounta<strong>in</strong>. Be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
Addendum team. we haven't<br />
been <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> !h,is rocky, fissured<br />
mounta<strong>in</strong> for its natural majesty.<br />
We've been <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> its geared<br />
rail,way, il very steep geared railway.<br />
The mounta<strong>in</strong> is Mount Pilanrs, ill<br />
central Switzerland, near Lake Lucerne.<br />
The railway is <strong>the</strong> Pilatusbahn. It climbs<br />
1,689 vertical meters at an average grade<br />
of 42percellt and a maximum grade of<br />
48 percent, At<strong>the</strong> higher grade,lhe railway'<br />
cars ri e a1mo t one meter for<br />
every I[WO meters run.<br />
For cars to makeihe climb, <strong>the</strong> railway<br />
uses a peeially designed Fa.ck and<br />
cogwheel assembly. The design was so<br />
