Recommendation
Fund as High priority. This 4 MG reclaimed water storage tank project will help the City to provide reclaimed water for irrigation and
lessen need for potable water. The project is consistent with the District's objectives by using an alternative water source to offset
potable water use. This project is located in the Southern Water Use Caution Area (SWUCA). There was suffcient information
provided to evaluate the project. The project is within the District's statutory authority to fund and is not the result of a permit
requirement or enforcement action.
Description
The City of Venice proposes to construct an approximately 4 million gallon reclaimed water storage tank adding it to their system.
The City has a reclaimed water program to reduce the demand for potable withdrawals from water supply sources by treating
wastewater to reclaimed water standards. Wastewater is treated and disinfected then piped to neighborhoods and golf courses
and used for irrigation. The City plans to expand its reclaimed water system over the next decade to provide service to as many
homeowners as possible in the City. The system operates in conjunction with the City's Eastside Water Reclamation Facility
(WRF) and most of the effluent is utilized as reclaimed water within the City.
Benefits
This project will provide for the increasing customer demand and to lessen the need for existing potable water resources. The
construction of additional reclaimed water storage will allow the City to store additional reclaimed water for future use and provide
additional flow to customers during dry season periods, thereby furthering the City's water conservation efforts.
Costs
Total project cost for construction is estimated at $2,750,000. The City is requesting 50% match in the Manasota basin for
$1,375,000. The City is fully funding the engineering services for this project from the City's fiscal year 2012 budget. These services
are expected to exceed $200,000 and the City is not seeking Cooperative Funding for the design phase of the project.
Additional Information
There are approximately 38 miles of reclaimed water distribution mains and approximately 2,600 reclaimed water customers
billed monthly. The CIty of Venice has one of the lowest per capita water use rates in the region. This is due to a combination of the
City's tiered water rate structure and its reclaimed water distribution system which has been in place for many years.
