This project will build upon components of the ongoing Dona Bay Hydrologic Restoration - Weir Construction (N342) project to create/restore nearly 300 acres of freshwater wetlands. District staff are working with Sarasota County to evaluate the timing, design considerations and implementation of the overall Dona Bay Restoration components. Description This cooperative funding project is for the construction of the 300 acre West Pinelands wetland creation/restoration identified in the Dona Bay Watershed Management Plan (DBWMP). The project consists of the hydrologic restoration of wetland areas that have been impacted by the channelization of Cow Pen Slough, as well as wetland creation in upland areas, for a total of 300 acres of wetland creation/restoration. This will be achieved by creating breaches and hydraulic connections from Cow Pen Slough to the project area, which will allow water impounded by the Cow Pen Slough weir to flow into the wetland creation and restoration areas. The Cow Pen Slough weir (N342), which allows for the impoundment of water for the wetland creation/restoration as well as the diversion of water from the slough into a 72" pipeline for conveyance to the Venice Minerals Surface Water Storage Facility, was co-funded by the District in FY2012; design and permitting is complete and the weir project is anticipated to be under construction in 2012. This project will help meet the objectives of natural system restoration/creation and the improvement of water quality discharging to Dona Bay identified in the Dona Bay Watershed Management Plan. Benefits The proposed project will result in the creation of approximately 300 acres of freshwater wetlands adjacent to Cow Pen Slough. In addition to habitat creation, the created wetlands will also provide water quality enhancements to the flows which will eventually discharge to Dona Bay. Costs The estimated project cost for the construction of the wetland creation/restoration areas is $4,324,564, of which Sarasota County is requesting a match of $2,162,282 cooperative funding from the Governing Board. The County funded the design and permitting phases of the project separately. The funding request for FY2013 is $1,081,141, to be matched equally by the County, and will be used for construction only.
