2005 Estimated Water Use Report Recreational/Aesthetic Water Use = 69 mgd Recreational/Aesthetic Water Withdrawal/Use Recreational/Aesthetic water use within the District was estimated to be 69 mgd during 2005 (Table 3). Recreational/Aesthetic category examines the self-supplied freshwater used for the irrigation of golf courses, cemeteries, parks and other large landscape. It does not include reclaimed water that is used for those same purposes. In addition to the amounts estimated in this category, it should be noted that freshwater is also used for similar purposes as integral components of other use categories, especially Public Supply. For example, it is common for the Public Supply permits associated with a new residential development to also serve the development's golf course. Also, there are Recreational/Aesthetic freshwater users that are too small to need a District permit. General Information For the purposes of this report, Recreational/Aesthetic use is divided into three major use types: golf courses, cemeteries/parks/playgrounds, and other uses. Water use permit data were collected and sorted by predominant use type for permits that are required to regularly report pumpage. 2005 Data Recreational/Aesthetic water use within the District was estimated to be 69 mgd during 2005. Of this amount approximately 54 mgd was withdrawn from ground water sources, the remaining 15 mgd was withdrawn from surface water sources. As stated earlier, these amounts do not include reuse, use associated with Public Supply permits, and small selfsupplied entities. Table 3 provides county-level use data for each major type within the Recreational/Aesthetic category. Regulatory database comparisons were performed as a check on the quantities listed under each type. This information is illustrated in Figure 9. Hillsborough County Southwest Florida Water Management District had the highest county-level use, with approximately 20 percent or 14 mgd of freshwater use estimated in this category. Sarasota and Polk counties each consumed approximately 13 percent or 9 mgd of water for Recreational/Aesthetic use. Golf Courses Water Use= 36 mgd From a different perspective, Figure 10 examines water use for different categories. It indicates that golf courses constitute the largest water use within the Recreational/Aesthetic category, representing approximately 36 mgd or 52 percent of the total. Cemeteries/Parks/Playgrounds was also a significant water use within this category using nearly 25 mgd or 36 percent of the total. Table A-5 provides permit-specific water use data in detail for this category, grouped by county. The table contains Water Use Permits (WUP) number, permittee name, average mount of water used per day, permitted use, withdrawal source, and type of major use. The District's estimated monthly Recreational/Aesthetic water use compared to rainfall is presented in Figure 11. Estimated monthly Recreational/Aesthetic water use at the county level can be obtained from Table A- 6. Several golf courses within the District receive reclaimed water from local wastewater treatment facilities. A description of reclaimed water sources and demands can be found in the District's 2003 Annual Reuse Report. In addition, a complete description of reclaimed water projects funded by the District, in cooperation with local governments, can be found in the annual Retrofit Programs, Reuse Projects, and Outdoor Water Conservation Efforts Summary Report.
