2005 Estimated Water Use Report Industrial/Commercial Use = 62 mgd Industrial/Commercial Water Withdrawal/Use Industrial/Commercial water use in the District averaged approximately 62 mgd during 2005. The Industrial/Commercial water use category includes non-farm, non-mining businesses that have a self-supplied source of water; for example, hospitals, schools, and cement plants. This category does not include water use for Industrial/Commercial purposes that is purchased from Public Supply systems, because those amounts are an integral component of the Public Supply estimates. It also does not include seawater or reclaimed water, which is used for power generation purposes. Inserted tables in this text represent only a snapshot of data for this category of water use. For more information, refer to tables 6 and A-11. The “Product Manufacturing” category includes water use for chemical manufacturing in addition to cement, asphalt, and other general manufacturing processes. 2005 Data Table 6 presents county-level water use by industry groups. Regulatory database comparisons were performed as a check on the quantities listed under each industry classification. Industrial water use data by permittee is detailed in Table A-11. In 2005, as shown in Figure 18, Polk County is the largest user for Commercial/Industrial purposes, accounting for more than 36 mgd or 59 percent of this category. Hillsborough County shows 14 mgd of use or 23 percent of this category. The most predominant use of Industrial/Commercial water in Polk and Hillsborough was for product manufacturing purposes. Figure 19 illustrates Industrial/Commercial water use by category during 2005. Of the total 62 mgd, Product Manufacturing represents the highest amount of water used, approximately 29 mgd or more than 46 percent of the total. Power Generation consumed the second largest amount of water, withdrawing approximately 21 mgd or 33 percent. Food Processing, General Commercial and Other Uses were other significant water use categories collectively withdrawing 21 percent or more than 12 mgd of the total in 2005. Table A-12 summarizes estimated monthly Industrial/Commercial water use and rainfall data by county. The estimated District total Industrial/Commercial water use during each month of the 2005 is depicted in Figure 20. For comparison purposes, monthly rainfall data is also included in Figure 20.
