'M'othing short of a furor marked the opening<br />

of "Guys and Dolls" at the Chicago Theatre<br />

Armistice Day. Manager Thompson said<br />

more than 25.000 people attended. In the<br />

evening, when Howard Miller emceed a special<br />

WBBM broadcast in the theatre lobby, 10,000<br />

persons were on the streets outside trying to<br />

gain entrance. Bedlam broke loose as Marlon<br />

Brando drove up to the theatre front in a<br />

limousine. At the same time limousines<br />

brought Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Goldwyn, Jean<br />

Simmons, director Joseph Mankiewicz. Stubby<br />

Kaye, six Goldwyn Girls, Gov. and Mrs.<br />

Stratton, and Secretary of State Charles<br />

Carpentier . During the "Guys and Dolls"<br />

run at the Chicago, the 98-cent admission for<br />

children remains the same. For adults there<br />

w 11 be a graduating price scale, with $1.80<br />

the tops at night. Usual top boxoffice rate<br />

is $1.25.<br />

Immediately following the hectic days of<br />

the recent convention, Ralph Smltha. general<br />

manager of Essaness Theatres, left for a Hot<br />

Springs vacation . Wisniewski,<br />

secretary to RKO office manager O'Brien,<br />

was married November 12 to Edward Wiorski<br />

. . . Another Filmrow wedding will take<br />

place Tuesday (29) when Erwin Lang of<br />

Walt Disney's office here and Anita Rosenthal,<br />

secretary to J. H. Stevens of Paramount,<br />

will be married.<br />

Charles Teltel, sales manager of A. Teitel<br />

Film Co., predicted that "Girl From the<br />

Marshes" is to become one of the top foreign<br />

film grossers of the year. The film grossed<br />

over $6,000 in its first week at the World<br />

Playhouse . . . Walt Disney's "Music Land"<br />

grossed so well at the Monroe that it was<br />

held over for another w-eek . . . The Esquire<br />

is the site of services conducted by the First<br />

Divine Science Church of Chicago, every<br />

Sunday morning at 11.<br />

While Stanley Leseritz, Esquire Theatre<br />

manager, is on a Florida vacation, John Shaffer<br />

is handling managerial duties . . . Paul<br />

Muni stopped over to say "hello" to friends<br />

before going on to New York . . . Bell & Howell<br />

has supplemented their movie camera<br />

equ pment with a line of high fidelity instruments<br />

which are now on display in leading<br />

music stores.<br />

The Better Films Council of Chicago sent<br />

out over 2.000 invitations to PTA officers<br />

and others in like groups for a preview<br />

showing of "Good Morning, Miss Etove" at<br />

the Century Theatre. 20th-Fox publicist Ted<br />

Todd is handling additional previews of the<br />

film in Milwaukee, Fort Wayne, IndianapolLs<br />

and Louisville within the next two weeks . . .<br />

RKO publicist Ralph Banghart left for some<br />

exploiteering trips in connection with "Tennessee's<br />

Partner" and "The Treasure of<br />

Pancho Villa." The latter fUm will follow<br />

""iTrial" at the Woods Theatre.<br />

Irwin Joseph, president of Modern Film<br />

Distributors, had to miss the convention because<br />

of a west coast bus'ness trip. While<br />

there, he conferred with Kroger Babb of<br />

Hallmark Productions about "Monika," which<br />

Modern Film Distributors is handling in this<br />

area. . . . Nathan Joseph, Irwin's father, was<br />

hospitalized because of a heart attack. The<br />

elder Mr. Joseph, now 76 years of age, operates<br />

the States Theatre . Cooper<br />

was elected Illinois Variety delegate to the<br />

international convention.<br />

New Drive-In Starting<br />

At Junction City, Kas.<br />

JUNCTION CITY KAS.—Mid-Central Theatres,<br />

Inc., will start immediately the construction<br />

of a new drive-in theatre to be located<br />

east of Junction City, across the bridge<br />

on Highway 40, one and a half miles from<br />

the city limits.<br />

Tlie new drive-in will be one of the most<br />

modern in the state w'hen finished and will<br />

have a capacity of 700 cars. It will be named<br />

the Plaza Drive-In Theatre inasmuch as it<br />

will be located in the Plaza area. Mid-Central<br />

also operates two indoor theatres in Junction<br />

City, the Colonial and the Junction.<br />

Board Meeting Nov. 30<br />

KANSAS CITY—Ed Harris, president of<br />

the Kansas-Missouri Theatre Ass'n, has<br />

called for a combined November and December<br />

meeting of the board November 30.<br />

This will avoid conflict with holiday activities<br />

and events. The meeting will be held in the<br />

offices in the Paramount building, with a<br />

catered luncheon.<br />

Thanksgiving Reopening<br />

POPLAR BLUFF, MO.—Thanksgiving Day<br />

has been selected for the reopening of the<br />

Jewell Theatre by its new owner, Charles<br />

Whittenburg who also operates the Strand<br />

here. The Jewell formerly was part of the<br />

Rodgers Theatres circuit, but has been closed<br />

for some time.<br />

Cast as toppers in 20th-Fox's "The Proud<br />

Ones," were Robert Ryan, Guy Madison and<br />

Virginia Mayo.<br />
