5. Shipboard Recreation Programs. The variety of shipboard<br />

recreation activities <strong>and</strong> programs is limited only by the<br />

resources of the comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the imagination of the crew. A<br />

short list of common shipboard programs include the following:<br />

a. Intramural team sports such as interdivisional softball.<br />

b. Individual sports competition such as a racquetball<br />

tournament.<br />

c. Ticket rebate program whereby a crewmember participates<br />

in the recreation event of their choice <strong>and</strong> submits a ticket stub<br />

or receipt for reimbursement, in whole or in part, from the<br />

Recreation Fund.<br />

d. Tours ashore.<br />

e. Unit social activities such as divisional parties or<br />

ship’s picnic.<br />

f. Recreation education programs where sailors learn<br />

leisure skills such as outdoor adventure programs.<br />

g. Recreation equipment checkout.<br />

h. Bingo.<br />

Local Fleet Recreation Coordinators can provide details <strong>and</strong><br />

assistance in establishing or improving shipboard recreation<br />

programs. The BUPERS triannual publication "Fleet Edition" also<br />

highlights successful shipboard recreation programs.<br />

6. Shore-Based Recreation<br />

a. Local MWR departments offer a wide variety of sports,<br />

recreation <strong>and</strong> club activities. Local Fleet Recreation<br />

Coordinators sponsor special programs <strong>and</strong> activities specifically<br />

for fleet sailors in major fleet concentration areas. When<br />

inport, the recreation program should be centered around<br />

activities sponsored by the MWR department <strong>and</strong> the Fleet<br />

Recreation Coordinator.<br />

b. Individual ships frequently host competitions <strong>and</strong> offer<br />

challenges to other comm<strong>and</strong>s. Many ISICs, especially at the<br />

squadron <strong>and</strong> group level, will sponsor recreational <strong>and</strong> sporting<br />

events.<br />
