p26-29.qxd 09/05/2006 11:27 Page 3 TECHNOLOGY ELECTRONIC CHARTS UKHO one step closer to global ENC coverage The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has signed a collaboration agreement with the Japanese Hydrographic Association (JHA) that will enable it to provide Admiralty customers with over 600 new electronic navigational charts (ENCs) of Japanese waters and the Malacca Strait. This agreement comes on the back of a number of other significant moves for the UKHO, which in addition to signing with Japan, has recently secured distribution arrangements with several other nations in Asia. Together, these deals will provide extensive ENC coverage of Asian waters and bring the UKHO a major step closer to providing its customers with a single source for all their official ENC needs. "When the UKHO launched the Admiralty ECDIS service just over a year ago, it included nine countries' ENCs supported by comprehensive ARCS coverage," said Andy Criddle, the UKHO's product manager. "In the last year, coverage from the original nine nations has grown significantly, a further 16 nations' data has been added and agreements to incorporate five more nation's ENCs have also been secured," he added. Admiralty ECDIS service customers will pay a fixed subscription fee up front and are automatically supplied with new ENCs, as they become available during their subscription period, without extra charge. Therefore, customers opting for the Admiralty ECDIS service - particularly those trading in the Baltic and the Mediterranean where growth over the last 12 months has been most significant for UKHO - have already received the benefits from this new UKHO service, and customers trading in Asia will receive similar benefits in the months to come. The new ENCs supplied by the JHA provide comprehensive coverage of Japanese waters at overview, general, coastal, approach and harbour scales, including the key ports of Kobe, Nagoya and Tokyo. In addition, ENCs of the busy Malacca Strait - reported to carry approximately 60,000 vessels a year between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea - are provided via the same agreement. • Norway also signs agreement with JHA The Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS), operator of the Primar Stavanger electronic navigational chart (ENC) service, has also signed a distribution agreement for Japanese ENCs with the Japan Hydrographic Association (JHA). Japan has full coverage of ENCs in usage bands from harbour to general. In addition, oceans around the country are covered with ENCs in overview scales. The Japanese coverage spans from Indonesia in the south to the Kamchatka Peninsula in the north, North Korea in the west and the Pacific as far as Hawaii in the east - close to 600 ENCs. In the Pacific, the ENCs meet seamlessly with the American NOAA ENCs, which are also available from Primar Stavanger. In addition, Primar will be able to distribute ENCs of the Malacca and Singapore Straits under this agreement. Spreading ENCs to all parts of the world via efficient and secure distribution mechanisms is essential for the safety of navigation and the progress of paperless navigation, the JHA said. Frode Klepsvik, director of the Norwegian Hydrographic Service added: "Including the Japanese ENCs in Primar Stavanger is a major step towards creating a worldwide one-stop-shop for such official charts." All ENCs from Japan will be available together with the rest of Primar Stavanger's comprehensive coverage through tools such as the Primar Chart Catalogue and the Primar Online service. Meanwhile, fellow Norwegian concern C-MAP reported significant interest in its products in the Asia/Pacific region. According to Borge Hetland, C-MAP's sales manager, the company's growth strategy in Asia was beginning to pay off. C-MAP opened a subsidiary office in Tokyo in 1999. Sales in Japan last year were up by 30% compared with the year before. So far this year, sales are up 50% on the first quarter 2005. Asians prefer Vector charts Hetland said he believed that C-MAP's success was partly due to the fact that Asian shipping companies were willing to embrace vector charts. "The market realises what C-MAP has always stated - vector charts are the only solution for full ECDIS functionality", he said. "We have learned that shipowners are less responsive to aggressive marketing efforts to promote raster charts. In the end, shipowners will choose the best solution and increasingly, that solution is vector charts," he added. C-MAP's Japanese president Isao Sagara is a former staff member at the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo. He said: "We are seeing that the market is responding to well to C- MAP's online chart updating service, which is free of charge to subscribers. "With the daily updating of the worldwide chart database and the availability to download compressed small data files, this is a convenient and cost effective way of getting the electronic charts updated," he continued. Hetland was confident that C-MAP Norway Asian sales will continue to rise. "C-MAP is a dominant market leader in Europe and with our recent success in Asia, we are now seeing the results of our long term strategy to co-operate and work in close relation with the hydrographic offices and the leading ECS and ECDIS manufacturers," he said. p26-29.qxd 09/05/2006 11:28 Page 4 Transas kits out Odfjell Transas Scandinavia's Norwegian office based in Horten recently secured the contract to fit 24 Transas simplified voyage data recorders (S-VDRs) and 19 dual electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) to Odfjell's tanker fleet, starting from March. Transas Norway, which relocated to Horten last year, was specifically chosen by Odfjell, whose primary focus is the transportation of chemical cargoes and other high spec bulk liquids. As well as the S-VDRs, some of the vessels will be fitted with a Transas Navi-Sailor 3000 ECDIS system. service. Sales & marketing director Lars Wallerstedt along with sales manager Captain Andreas Arvidsson, commented: "Transas are extremely pleased that Odfjell have chosen our safety systems on board their vessels. We feel that this contract demonstrates how effectively our S- VDR and ECDIS systems work together in producing what is essentially a superb navigational tool for any shipowner, of any size. Having officially signed the contract on the 24th March, it was agreed that the 24 Transas S-VDRs and 19 Dual ECDIS will be fitted to Odfjell vessels over the next two to three years. Odfjell's specialised fleet consists of 123 ships including newbuildings, with a total capacity of about 3.4 mill dwt. TO Transas has met with considerable success with its ECDIS. One of the latest orders calls for the delivery of 19 systems to Odfjell. The installation of 24 dual ECDIS systems forms part of Odfjell's preparation towards sailing totally 'paperless' in line with IMO guidelines.
