Dear Nuclear Medicine Professional,
As the molybdenum 99 (Mo 99) shortage continues, we remain focused on all aspects of the situation to
maximize patient access to the vital, daughter medical isotope of Mo 99 – technetium 99m (Tc 99m).
As a reminder, the High Flux Reactor (HFR) in the Netherlands remains down as scheduled through mid-
August 1 , and the National Research Universal reactor in Canada is not expected to return until late July 2 .
The BR2 reactor in Belgium is also offline during May for routine maintenance.
Based on updated supply estimates from the Maria, BR2, OSIRIS (France) and Safari (South Africa)
reactors, daily projection calendars for Tc 99m generators in the Americas are shown below through June.
As always, projections are subject to change.
Majority of generator standing orders met but no extra; some Tc 99m UD impact
Generator standing order shortage resulting in size reductions, Tc 99m shortage and UD impact
Significant shortage to generator standing orders, severe Tc 99m shortage and UD impact
X No Mo99 supply expected. Generator production canceled.
! Special production run due to timing of Mo 99 supply
It is important to remember the color coding reflects the day a generator is manufactured, with delivery the
next day. Use of the Tc 99m from that generator goes well beyond the original production date to supply
patient procedures.
A weekly view of our projected supply for July is also
shown on the calendar at left. While there are periods
of extreme shortage, the addition of the Maria reactor
will make an otherwise difficult month more
manageable. Note that the full weeks are shown with
anticipated supply levels over the course of the week;
Actual production days may be higher or lower than
the color indicates.
We also continue to increase production of thallium Tl 201 within our supply capacity for those procedures
where it can be a clinically appropriate substitute. You are encouraged to plan your thallium needs in
advance and contact your Covidien Customer Service representative to ensure those needs are known.
We are committed to frequent communication when new updates are available. To learn more about the
current Mo 99 supply situation and Maria, please visit www.covidien.com/Mo99supply.
