Democracy and Planning
Council provides democratic local decision-making and action by, and on behalf of our District’s
many communities. We are focused on meeting the current and future needs of communities for
good-quality local infrastructure, local public services, and performance of regulatory functions
in a way that is most cost-effective for households and businesses.
Leadership, Governance and
Advocacy services
What we do
Council acts as the District’s advocate with regional and
national governments to ensure that the needs of our
communities are considered when policies and plans
are being developed. We have a major programme of
engagement with residents and ratepayers that includes
a wide range of committee work and a communications
programme.
What we plan for 2013/14
• Conduct elections for the District’s Mayor, Council and
the Turangi-Tongariro Community Board.
• Participate in the Waikato regional growth, planning and
efficiency project. ($70,000).
What’s different from the LTP
Services under this activity are the same as in the LTP
2012.
Council works collaboratively with a wide range of other
governing bodies, including central government, other
local government (such as Waikato Regional Council), iwi
authorities (such as the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board)
and local hapu, district health boards, and many others.
Council meetings are webcast, and Council papers are
available prior to meetings, to promote transparency and
accountability of decision-making.
