London as the place where crime and hunger cast<br />

modern writer, Dennis Hird, states : "For sheer putrid<br />
rottenness London fashionable life beats a disused<br />
graveyard." It was stated in September, 1923, that<br />
the London Council for the promotion of public<br />
Morality presided over by the Bishop of London, had<br />
sent out special observers to Hyde Park with the<br />
result that ten days' observation desclosed 746 cases of<br />
impropriety, indecencey or immorality in the park.<br />
The Bishop of Zanzibar has very recently given it as<br />
his deliberate opinion that "London is a glorious city,<br />
but it is terribly in the hands of Satan." The condition<br />
of other great cities in Christendom is even<br />
worse.<br />
The life that is often led by work-people, operatives<br />
and menials in the Christian cities reflects great shame<br />
on Christianity itself. Those who have looked closely<br />
into the private life of the workers at the great docks<br />
or in the mines have a very sad story to tell. A highclass<br />
English lady has just stated in the columns of<br />
the Morning Post her personal experience of life as a<br />
waitress and "Kitchen hand" at a restaurant. She<br />
states<br />
that what she saw was shocking and she found,<br />
"the needless obscenity,<br />
filth and confusion very<br />
trying."<br />
A strange feature of the Christian life came into<br />
prominence in Europe during the Great War. The<br />
Bystander stated that the plain fact was that the<br />
raising of $ huge army for which no immediate occu-
