IMPLEMENTATION CHECKLIST<br />

Before the activity<br />

Discuss the purpose and benefits of daily physical activity with students.<br />

Students should understand that regular physical activity, <strong>in</strong> addition to be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beneficial, can also be enjoyable.<br />

Ensure that students become familiar with safety rules and procedures.<br />

Involve students <strong>in</strong> the plann<strong>in</strong>g and implementation of the daily physical<br />

activity program.<br />

Plan opportunities to <strong>in</strong>tegrate physical activity <strong>in</strong>to other subject areas.<br />

Help students develop the skills necessary to participate fully <strong>in</strong> daily physical<br />

activity and potentially to lead activities <strong>in</strong> the class.<br />

Establish a safe and motivat<strong>in</strong>g environment for physical activity.<br />

Expla<strong>in</strong> to students how to monitor their personal physical activity levels<br />

(e.g., describe the talk test).<br />

Ensure that the equipment to be used is easily accessible and appropriate for<br />

the facility (e.g., classroom, school gymnasium) and for the age and ability of<br />

the students.<br />

Ensure that all activities and facilities enable every student to participate.<br />

Ensure that all activities and activity areas are safe for students.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the activity<br />

Ensure that students have a proper warm-up.<br />

Ensure that students are engaged <strong>in</strong> moderate to vigorous physical activity<br />

throughout the activity time.<br />

Ensure that students have a proper cool-down.<br />

After the activity<br />

Reflect on the physical activity, and make notes on ways of modify<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

activity for later use.<br />

Talk about ways <strong>in</strong> which students can <strong>in</strong>corporate physical activity <strong>in</strong>to their<br />

daily lives on a lifelong basis.<br />
