Safety<br />

Rem<strong>in</strong>d students to be cautious when mov<strong>in</strong>g and to be aware of the personal space of others.<br />

Warm-up<br />

Have students beg<strong>in</strong> by walk<strong>in</strong>g on the spot or around the activity area with a partner while discuss<strong>in</strong>g the components of physical activity,<br />

slowly <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g their speed.<br />

Lead, or have a student lead, a stretch<strong>in</strong>g rout<strong>in</strong>e (see the Appendix for sample stretches).<br />

<strong>Activity</strong>: Cross Country Canada<br />

Have students perform each of the follow<strong>in</strong>g activities for 45 seconds. Have them repeat the circuit, perform<strong>in</strong>g it a total of four times.<br />

Climb<strong>in</strong>g the mounta<strong>in</strong>: Have students pretend they are climb<strong>in</strong>g a mounta<strong>in</strong>.They can pretend they are us<strong>in</strong>g a rope or just climb<strong>in</strong>g up a<br />

slope. Make sure they are us<strong>in</strong>g their legs.<br />

Ski<strong>in</strong>g the Rockies: Have students do side-to-side steps with twists as if they are do<strong>in</strong>g a slalom down the Rocky Mounta<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

Bik<strong>in</strong>g the pla<strong>in</strong>s: Have students pretend to be sitt<strong>in</strong>g on a bicycle, while they are sitt<strong>in</strong>g either at their desks or at a specific location.<br />

Have them move their legs as if they are cycl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Ski<strong>in</strong>g the north: Have students place their feet on pieces of paper.Without tak<strong>in</strong>g their feet off the floor, they slide their feet <strong>in</strong> a ski<strong>in</strong>g<br />

motion either side-to-side or front-to-back as if they are cross-country ski<strong>in</strong>g (either Nordic-style or skate ski<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

Paddl<strong>in</strong>g the St. Lawrence: Have students pretend they are paddl<strong>in</strong>g a kayak on the St. Lawrence. Have them sit straight up, either on the<br />

floor or <strong>in</strong> a chair. Students need to paddle on both sides, as a kayak paddle has blades on both sides.<br />

Cool-down<br />

Have students walk on the spot, slowly reduc<strong>in</strong>g their speed.<br />

Lead, or have a student lead, a stretch<strong>in</strong>g rout<strong>in</strong>e (see the Appendix for sample stretches).<br />

Variations<br />

Encourage students to add their own examples of activities that they have already done or would like to do.<br />

Make references to various Canadian and world landforms referred to <strong>in</strong> the Grade 7 Patterns <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> Geography strand.<br />

Notes for Teachers<br />

Discuss with students geographical differences found <strong>in</strong> Canada and<br />

ways <strong>in</strong> which these can <strong>in</strong>fluence physical activity levels.<br />
