There are many opportunities for the classroom teacher to <strong>in</strong>corporate daily physical<br />

activity <strong>in</strong> an exist<strong>in</strong>g schedule. A teacher can use a variety of strategies, such as:<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g physical activity to help re<strong>in</strong>force literacy and numeracy skills. This<br />

strategy provides students with active, hands-on opportunities to develop a deeper<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g of the concepts and strategies taught <strong>in</strong> the literacy and numeracy<br />

programs;<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g material from other subject areas <strong>in</strong>to daily physical activity. This<br />

strategy provides students with opportunities to learn through physical activity<br />

some of the concepts taught <strong>in</strong> other areas of the curriculum;<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g curriculum expectations from the health and physical education<br />

curriculum with those from one or more other subject areas. This strategy<br />

provides students with an opportunity to participate <strong>in</strong> physical activities with<strong>in</strong><br />

an <strong>in</strong>tegrated unit or lesson and to have achievement of expectations from both<br />

subject areas assessed;<br />

dedicat<strong>in</strong>g time for daily physical activity as a separate activity. This strategy may<br />

provide the classroom teacher with greater flexibility to provide the required daily<br />

physical activity.<br />

SAMPLE LESSON PLAN<br />

20-m<strong>in</strong>ute Session<br />

Warm-up: 2–3 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

Moderate to vigorous activity: 15–16 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

Cool-down: 2–3 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

School-Wide <strong>Daily</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Activity</strong><br />

<strong>Daily</strong> physical activity can be <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to the schedule of the whole school <strong>in</strong> a<br />

variety of ways, such as the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

It can take place <strong>in</strong> all classrooms after morn<strong>in</strong>g or afternoon announcements.<br />

It can take place with the entire school together, outdoors or <strong>in</strong> the gymnasium,<br />

as appropriate, at regularly scheduled times.<br />

It can be set up <strong>in</strong> a rotat<strong>in</strong>g schedule so that the same subject is not always affected.<br />

It can be a made part of special events tak<strong>in</strong>g place dur<strong>in</strong>g the school day<br />

(e.g., seasonal celebrations, school spirit days, community events).<br />
