MONTH IN REVIEW CEIR to Discuss Industry Performance at Predict Conference BY HIL ANDERSON, senior editor New York, NY – The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) will have some good news to share with trade show industry executives at Predict, its annual economic forecast conference, on September 15. CEIR announced in late August that the numbers for the first half of 2011 showed the trade show industry outperforming the overall U.S. economy. According to CEIR, the exhibition industry grew 2.4% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period of 2010. The overall economy grew only 1.9%. The three major show metrics – attendance, number of exhibitors and exhibit space sold – all reversed course from their 2010 declines. Growth, however, was relatively modest with a 2.8% increase in exhibit space, 1.0% for attendance and 0.5% for exhibitors. “Like the economy, exhibitions are showing strong signs of life through 2010 into 2011,” said CEIR economist Jeffrey Werling. “Can robust recovery continue despite anemic employment growth?” That question and other issues related to trade shows will be explored by Werling, fellow CEIR economist Allen Shaw and other high-powered speakers at Predict, which will take place at the Time Warner Center in New York City. The agenda includes presentations by David Loechner, president of Nielsen Exhibitions; Thomas Kemp, chairman and CEO of Northstar Travel Media LLC, Freeman Executive Vice President Robert Priest-Heck, and Nancy Walsh, executive vice president of Reed Exhibitions. ExhibitMatch is a matchmaking service similar to eBay in which buyers and sellers make contact and strike deals online. The result is a fast and transparent means for exhibitors to find the vendors who will meet their needs and their price points without phoning every number in industry directories. The Las Vegas company launched last year and recently went live, offering exhibitors a convenient place to look for the right talent. “We’re looking to shake things up in the trade show industry,” said Exhibit- Match President Tim Sullivan. “It seems there was a need for more competition and greater price transparency for exhibitors, and that is the need we went after with our online bidding platform.” ExhibitMatch is developing a data base of vetted and qualified contractors around the world that can handle any and all aspects of booth design and construction as well as other needs such as furniture rental or audio-visual services. The contractors pay a fee to join ExhibitMatch. Exhibitors are charged $9.95 to post their RFP. An exhibitor fills out the online RFP proposal and is matched with three vendors who provide bids on the project. The proposal provides the bidders with the details of the project, including everything from the size and goals of the exhibit to the company’s logos and preferred colors. Once the exhibitor is introduced to the vendors, ExhibitManager steps aside and lets the two sides proceed. “We’re not brokering anything because we are not involved in transferring any funds,” Sullivan told Trade Show Executive. “We aren’t trying to reinvent the process and we don’t obligate anyone to work with anyone else.” Exhibitors can, in fact, invite vendors they have worked with in the past to bid on a job even if they are not part of ExhibitMatch’s growing roster of approved contractors. The service accommodates exhibitors of any size and experience level. It also works well for companies looking to exhibit at trade shows overseas that do not have the contacts in a particular region they need. “The contractors we have now are based primarily in the U.S., but we are looking to serve every market so we do literally have contractors on every continent except Antarctica,” Sullivan said. Anaheim Convention Center to Expand Outdoor Event Space BY HIL ANDERSON, senior editor Anaheim, CA – The Anaheim Convention Center will increase its event space by 100,000 square feet with a new outdoor plaza that will be completed in 2012. The Grand Plaza project does not include any dedicated indoor exhibit space, but it will greatly overhaul and increase the outdoor multi-function area that is available year-round. “Our excellent weather is the perfect backdrop for this space,” said Charles Ahlers, president of the Anaheim Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau. “Groups can dine al fresco, listen to concerts, or attend receptions and exhibitions.” The design enhances the ability of trade show attendees to stroll between the convention center and the adjacent hotels. It also includes concessions and areas where shuttle buses can pick up and drop Santos, Brazil – Reed Exhibitions Brazil added the Santos Offshore Oil & Gas Expo to its portfolio of energy events. Details of the acquisition between Reed and AGS3 Promocoes e Eventos LTDA were not disclosed; however the deal gives Reed a new presence in a key city in the South American energy market. “We will strive to make Santos Offshore a special part of our global energy portfolio, helping customers from around the world to discover a new market in Santos,” said Juan Pablo de Vera, president of Reed Exhibitions Brazil. Santos is a port city that serves as a base for the development of Brazil’s huge Santos Basin oil-and-gas reserves. Santos Offshore Oil & Gas Expo was off passengers. The project footprint runs along the main entrance to the convention center on Convention Way between the Anaheim Marriott and Hilton Anaheim hotels. It then curves around to the center’s Exhibit Hall D. Construction will begin in the Spring and will be completed before the end of 2012. The Anaheim Convention Center is the largest convention facility in California. It offers 842,000 square feet of prime exhibit space and is ranked #13 in size in Trade Show Executive’s World’s Top Convention Centers directory.
