Los Angeles Moves Forward
on Plan for Stadium Adjacent
to Convention Center
Exposition
& Conference
Los Angeles, CA – Plans for a new downtown
football stadium that would be
joined at the hip with the Los Angeles
Convention Center took a step forward
August 9 when the city council unanimously
approved a non-binding agreement
with the developers.
The 12-0 vote gave the preliminary
green light to the concept in which the
west wing of the center will be torn down
and rebuilt on another corner of the
center. The vacant lot would become part
of the site of Farmers Field, a 72,000-
seat stadium that could also be used for
exhibit space.
The city council vote opens the door
for further negotiations between the city
and AEG and the launch of an environmental
impact study. The discussions are
expected to run about nine months. AEG
has pledged to finance the construction
of the stadium and the city would issue
$275 million in bonds for the convention
center portion of the project.
“It is time to take the next brave step
forward,” City Council President Eric
Garcetti said during the meeting.
The $1.2 billion stadium is the
brainchild of AEG Entertainment, which
is seeking to lure an NFL team to Los
Angeles. The stadium is projected for
completion by 2016. The rebuilding of
West Hall would be completed before the
stadium, and construction would likely
not disrupt operations at the center.
The new West Hall is expected to
be approximately the same size as the
current hall, about 210,000 square feet
overall. The stadium, however, would
add significant floor space that could
be used for exhibits and expand the
center from its current 720,000 square
feet of prime exhibit space (18th in
the Trade Show Executive World’s Top
Convention Center rankings) to somewhere
around 1.4 million square feet,
about the same capacity as the Georgia
World Congress Center.
The prospect of Los Angeles moving
north of 1 million square feet was a
selling point for project supporters who
predicted the city would be able to attract
top-tier trade shows that don’t fit inside
the current building.
