1.15 Due to the semi-arid climate, most<br />

rivers and streams in <strong>Botswana</strong> are<br />

ephemeral, most valleys are usually dry,<br />

except during the rains. Perennial rivers<br />

include the Okavango and Chobe, which<br />

have their sources outside the country. The<br />

Makgadikgadi Pans represent the inland<br />

drainage basins into which some rivers,<br />

such as the Mosetse, Nata and Boteti, flow<br />

during the wet seasons.<br />

Climate<br />

influences, rainfall is low and temperatures<br />

are high. There is high inter-annual<br />

variability <strong>of</strong> rainfall, and drought is a<br />

Drought adversely affects the already fragile<br />

food and agricultural situation in the country<br />

and seriously impairs the rural economy and<br />

socio-cultural structures. However, the<br />

<strong>Government</strong> has a well thought out and well<br />

tested way <strong>of</strong> coping with drought.<br />

1.16 Because <strong>of</strong> the country’s location in<br />

the sub-tropical high pressure belt <strong>of</strong> the<br />
