Falls and collisions with objects (both 32%) were the major causes of ED presentations. Open wounds (26%) and sprains and strains (21%) were the most frequent injury diagnoses and the lower extremity (32%) and upper extremity (26%) the most common body regions injured. The most common specific injuries among ED presentations were open wound to the face or head (14% of all recreational boating-related injury ED presentations), shoulder dislocation and ankle sprains (each 3%). 5.5 Ranking of recreational boating-related activities for injury The boating-related recreational activities most frequently related to fatalities and hospital-treated injury are shown in Table 14, ranked on injury frequency. The ranking is tentative because case frequency data for hospital admissions and ED presentations underestimate the size of the problem due to under-reporting.
