before the state racing and athletics hearing
board here March 7 on appeals, including
those from theatre owners, against
the recent authorization of night racing
at Rhode Island's two pari-mutuel race
The racing commission has given Narragansett
Park and Lincoln Downs permission
to conduct races on 24 nights each,
racing schedules.
The first witness at the hearing, which
was chairman Testa of the racing commission,
night racing, had considered its effect on
theatres, recreation, industrial development,
retail sales, bowling alleys, discount
houses and nearby residents. He expressed
the belief that the overall effect of night
racing will be good.
North Shore Shopping Center.
PEABODY. MASS.—Ground was broken
at the North Shore Shopping Center here
recently for the construction of a $2,000.-
000 project, a 1.200-seat theatre. 32-lane,
ten-pin bowling center and luxury restaui'ant,
by General Drive-In Corp. of
Boston, national theatre-re.staurant-bowling
chain.
Plans call for the bowling centei' to be
completed by early August and the theatre.
"Cinema at Northshore." and the restaurant.
"Yankee Beefeater," to be in operation
about Labor Day.
Dignitaries from Peabody and executives
of Allied Stores, owners of Northshore. and
officials of General Di'ive-In Corp. of Boston
participated in ground-breaking ceremonies.
Richard A. Smith, president of
General Drive-In Coit>.: Nick Lavidor.
drive-in division manager: Melvin R. Wintman,
general manager; Howard Spiess. assistant
bowling division; Mayor Edward T. Meaney
of Peabody; Andrew L. Mm'phy, vice-president
of Alstores, realty division of Allied
Stores Coi-p., were among those participating.
Designed for the convenience and leisui'e
enjoyment of the vast North Shore communities,
the theatre will be known as the
"Cinema at Northshore." and is the second
Cinema to be built in New England.
The first was built at Shoppers World.
Fi-amingham. in 1951. The bowling center
will have the name of "Holiday Lanes."
as do most others in General's circuit.
Present plans call for the theatre to feature
the latest and finest in appointments,
including the largest screen in New England.
64x30-feet. covering the entire front
wall of the theatre. The comfort and convenience
of the public have detennined
the design and equipment. President Smith
said.
For example, he pointed out. pushback
se?ting will pemrit patrons to pass between
rows without causing anyone to rise and
staggered seating on an inclined floor will
give an unobstructed view of the screen
from any seat in the theatre.
The air conditioning system has been
engineered to change thermostatically from
cooling to heating as needed and the theatre
structure will be acoustically treated
throughout. Stereophonic hi-fi speakers,
concealed in the walls, surrounding the
auditorium will virtually immerse the audience
in sound.
The Northshore Shopping Center's 8.000-
car free parking area will be available to
patrons at the Cinema. A popular feature
of all General's Shopping Center theatres
is a lobby art gallery, which will be included
in the new Northshore "Cinema." The projection
and sound equipment will represent
the latest develoi>ments from the field
of electronic research and engineering.
The Holiday Lanes bowling center will
be in keeping with General's policy of providing
ten-pin bowling in an atmosphere of
luxury. The new center will be completely
air conditioned and provided with the latest
and finest in automatic equipment. For
the bowler's convenience, there will be a
free nm-sery and civic organizations. Free
instruction, a well stocked pro shop, and
the ultimate in service will be among the
features of the new center.
In addition to featuring a superb dinner
menu for leisure dining enjoyment,
the restam-ant will specialize in shoppers'
luncheons to accommodate the thousands
of visitors to the popular Northshore Shop-
