Native to eastern U.S., this tree is well adapted
to city conditions and wet soils. This is the
parent species of numerous cultivars.
The most highly rated and reliable of the Red
Maple cultivars, Red Sunset ® has become
the standard to which others are compared.
Developed by J. Frank Schmidt, Jr., it’s a
vigorous growing tree with a strong and
symmetrical branching pattern. Lustrous,
glossy green summer foliage changes to brilliant
shades of red and orange-red in the fall.

A strong upright branch pattern gives Scarlet
Sentinel ® an oval to rectangular outline and a
bold appearance that makes it an excellent tree
for streets and parking lots. Leaves are darker
green and larger than those of other Red Maples,
and they hold up well in summer heat.
A National Arboretum introduction, the seedless
Somerset resulted from crossing October Glory ®
with Autumn Flame ® . It has excellent form in the
nursery and consistent bright red fall color.

This U. S. National Arboretum introduction glows
in the fall with reliable bright red color. A hybrid
between Red Sunset ® and Autumn Flame ® , it is

Schlesinger’s form is unusual among the Red
Maples in that its strong upright spreading
branches form a broad vase shaped crown.
Also unique is the soft tone of its fall color.
Most good Red Maples’ fall color can be

termed pastel.
