Trees are the Answer
J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. has known and stated
for many years that “Trees are the Answer.” While
most people recognize the aesthetic value of trees,
only recently have scientists been documenting the
fact that trees are the answer to many problems
that beset our society.
Tree scientists have documented how many pounds
of particulates an urban tree removes from the air
we breathe, how much CO 2
is converted to lifegiving
oxygen, how many gallons of potential
stormwater runoff are captured, and how many
dollars are saved in heating and cooling costs.
Collectively, our urban forests save our communities
billions of dollars each year.
Social scientists and health scientists have determined
that shoppers linger longer and spend more
money in stores shaded by street trees. Children
learn better when their classrooms view trees and
open spaces. Neighbors are more neighborly, and
crime is reduced in neighborhoods planted with
trees. A view of trees helps hospital patients recover
faster, and gardens are an important tool in the
healing process.
