About the Author:<br />

Cynthia Roat is a consultant and tra<strong>in</strong>er on issues related to language access <strong>in</strong> health care. She has been a tra<strong>in</strong>er<br />

<strong>for</strong> more than 23 years, start<strong>in</strong>g her career work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rural development programs <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America, after which<br />

she earned a Masters degree <strong>in</strong> International Public Health from the University of Wash<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>in</strong> Seattle. Certified<br />

by the Wash<strong>in</strong>gton State Department of Social and Health Services <strong>for</strong> both medical and social service <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

she has been a medical <strong>in</strong>terpreter s<strong>in</strong>ce 1992. She has made significant contributions <strong>in</strong> the areas of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, program<br />

development, policy <strong>for</strong>mulation, advocacy and organizational outreach. Cynthia is the pr<strong>in</strong>ciple author of<br />

Bridg<strong>in</strong>g the Gap, currently the most widely offered tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> medical <strong>in</strong>terpreters <strong>in</strong> the United States. She is a<br />

found<strong>in</strong>g member of the Society of Medical Interpreters <strong>in</strong> Seattle and Co-chair of the Advisory Committee of the<br />

National Council on Interpret<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Health Care and is known nationally as an energetic advocate <strong>for</strong> the field of<br />

health care <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpreters <strong>in</strong> general.<br />

The Cali<strong>for</strong>nia Academy of Family Physicians, established <strong>in</strong> 1948, is the largest s<strong>in</strong>gle medical specialty society <strong>in</strong><br />

Cali<strong>for</strong>nia with more than 7,000 family physician, family medic<strong>in</strong>e resident, and medical student members.<br />

The mission of the Cali<strong>for</strong>nia Academy of Family Physicians is:<br />

• To enhance, strengthen and promote the specialty of family medic<strong>in</strong>e;<br />

• To promote professional and personal growth <strong>for</strong> its members; and<br />
