CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS 2
Dear Colleagues:
This is a toolkit for physicians and the health care teams with whom they work each day. In it we
will answer three very important questions:
1: What’s the difference between communicating directly with a patient vs.
using an interpreter with a patient?
2: What’s the difference between a trained and an untrained interpreter?
3: Why can’t we just use friends and family as interpreters?
This toolkit presents a systems approach to re-designing your office practice to provide the highest
quality care possible to patients who speak limited English.
It is a guide, not a mandate, and will assist you in taking small steps toward a complete
language access system.
We welcome your comments and applaud your commitment to ensuring language access
for your patients.
Best regards,
