(Su) This course will serve as an introduction to the athletic training clinical program.<br />

Procedures and policies <strong>of</strong> the clinical program and application <strong>of</strong> athletic preventive devices<br />

will be included as well. Prerequisite: Admission to the graduate program in athletic training.<br />

KINS5222 Athletic Training Clinical II - Evaluation Lab - Lower Extremity<br />

(Fa) This course will serve as a process for monitoring student’s progression <strong>of</strong> athletic<br />

training pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies, acquire clinical hours under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> a certified athletic<br />

trainer, and reinforce the evaluation skills <strong>of</strong> gait, lower extremity, and spine/pelvis. Prerequisite:<br />

KINS 5212.<br />

KINS5232 Athletic Training Clinical III - Evaluation - Upper Extremity (Sp)<br />

This course will serve as a process for monitoring student’s progression <strong>of</strong> athletic training<br />

competencies, acquire clinical hours under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> a certified athletic trainer,<br />

and reinforce the evaluation skills <strong>of</strong> the upper extremities, head, neck, and posture. Prerequisite:<br />

KINS 5222.<br />

KINS5242 Athletic Training Clinical IV - Emergency Procedures/Modality<br />

Lab (Su) This course will serve as a process for monitoring student’s progression <strong>of</strong> athletic<br />

training competencies, acquire clinical hours under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> a certified athletic<br />

trainer, and reinforce and instruct new emergency procedures and serve as a lab for therapeutic<br />

modalities. Prerequisite: KINS 5232.<br />

KINS5252 Athletic Training Clinical V - Rehabilitation Lab (Fa) This course will<br />

serve as a process for monitoring student’s progression <strong>of</strong> athletic training competencies, acquire<br />

clinical hours under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> a certified athletic trainer, and reinforce techniques<br />

and applications <strong>of</strong> therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation. Prerequisite: KINS 5242<br />

KINS5262 Athletic Training Clinical VI - Athletic Training Seminar (Sp) This<br />

course will serve as a process for monitoring student’s progression <strong>of</strong> athletic training competencies,<br />

acquire clinical hours under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> a certified athletic trainer, and<br />

serve as a capstone course validating the athletic training clinical pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies and prepare<br />

students for the NATABOC certification exam and future employment. Prerequisite: KINS<br />

5252.<br />

KINS5323 Biomechanics I (Fa) Intended to serve as in introduction to biomechanics<br />

and focuses on scientific principles involved in understanding and analyzing human motion.<br />

KINS5333 Instrumentation in Biomechanics (Odd years, Sp) The application<br />

<strong>of</strong> knowledge and skills necessary for data collection for sports analysis. Provides valuable<br />

information on instrumentation used specifically in biomechanics. Prerequisite: KINS 5323.<br />

KINS5363 Evaluation Techniques <strong>of</strong> Athletic Injuries - Upper Extremity (Sp)<br />

Use <strong>of</strong> scientific assessment methods to recognize and evaluate the nature and severity <strong>of</strong><br />

athletic injuries to the upper extremities, trunk, and head. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate<br />

athletic training program.<br />

KINS5373 Evaluation Techniques <strong>of</strong> Athletic Injuries - Lower Extremity (Fa)<br />

Use <strong>of</strong> scientific assessment methods to recognize and evaluate the nature and severity <strong>of</strong><br />

athletic injuries to the hip and lower extremities. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate athletic<br />

training program.<br />

KINS5423 Assessment and Prescriptive Programming in Adapted KINS<br />

(Odd years, Sp) Instruction in the assessment, prescription, and use <strong>of</strong> instruction methods,<br />

materials, and equipment relevant to specific handicapping conditions in the adapted physical<br />

education setting.<br />

KINS5453 Therapeutic Modalities in Athletic Training (Su) Contemporary therapeutic<br />

modalities used in managing athletic injuries. Modalities covered are classified as thermal<br />

agents, electrical agents, or mechanical agents. Emphasis is placed on their physiological<br />

effects, therapeutic indications (and contraindications), and clinical application. Prerequisite:<br />

Admission to graduate athletic training program.<br />

KINS5463 Therapeutic Exercise and Rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> Athletic Injuries (Fa) A<br />

systematic approach to exercise program development, techniques, indications and contraindications<br />

<strong>of</strong> exercise, and progression as related to athletic injury, prevention, and return to play<br />

guidelines. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate athletic training program.<br />

KINS5473 Administration in Athletic Training (Su) Administrative components<br />

<strong>of</strong> athletic training. Basic concepts <strong>of</strong> legal liability, leadership and management principles,<br />

financial management, day to day scheduling and supervision, maintenance, and general<br />

administration. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate athletic training program.<br />

KINS5483 Medical Conditions in Athletic Training (Fa) This course will provide<br />

a collection <strong>of</strong> knowledge, skills, and values that the entry-level certified athletic trainer must<br />

possess to recognize, treat, and refer, when appropriate, the general medical conditions and<br />

disabilities <strong>of</strong> athletes and others involved in physical activity. Prerequisite: Admission to the<br />

graduate athletic training program or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />

KINS5493 Practicum in Adapted Physical Education (Irregular) Deals with the<br />

application <strong>of</strong> skills, knowledge and concepts necessary for planning, organizing and conducting<br />

adapted physical education programs through supervised field experiences.<br />

KINS5513 Physiology Exercise I (Fa) A study <strong>of</strong> the foundation literature in exercise<br />

physiology. Emphasis is placed on the muscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems.<br />

KINS5523 Muscle Metabolism in Exercise (Sp) A study <strong>of</strong> the metabolic changes<br />

that occur in muscle as a result <strong>of</strong> exercise, exercise training, and other stressors. Prerequisite:<br />

KINS 5513 or equivalent.<br />

KINS5533 Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (Odd years, Fa) An examination <strong>of</strong><br />

the concepts, design, and implementation <strong>of</strong> cardiac rehabilitation programs. Emphasis on<br />

exercise programs but reference to nutrition, psychology, and other lifestyle interventions.<br />

KINS5543 Cardiovascular Function in Exercise (Fa) Study <strong>of</strong> the effects <strong>of</strong><br />

exercise training and other stressors on the cardiovascular system. Detailed study <strong>of</strong> the components<br />

<strong>of</strong> the cardiovascular system and the responses and adaptations <strong>of</strong> those components<br />

to selected stimuli. Prerequisite: KINS 5513 or equivalent.<br />

KINS5593 Practicum in Laboratory Instrumentation (Su, Fa) Practical experience<br />

in testing physical fitness utilizing laboratory equipment. Objective is to quantify physiological<br />

parameters, leading to the individualized exercise prescription.<br />

KINS5643 Motor Learning (Sp) Concepts <strong>of</strong> motor learning and control are presented.<br />

Attention is given to an analysis <strong>of</strong> the literature in movement control, motor behavior, and<br />

motor learning.<br />

KINS574V Internship (Sp) (1-6) May be repeated for up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> degree credit.<br />

KINS5753 Sport Psychology (Su) Investigation <strong>of</strong> historical and contemporary<br />

research in sport psychology. Prerequisite: HKRD 5353.<br />

KINS5773 Performance and Drugs (Sp) The pharmacological and physiological<br />

effects <strong>of</strong> ergogenic aids upon the athlete and performance coupled with the ethical and moralistic<br />

viewpoints <strong>of</strong> drug taking. Practical laboratory experiences are provided with pertinent<br />

statistical surveys <strong>of</strong> athletes; their drug taking habits and relevant psychological impact on<br />

performance. Prerequisite: BIOL 2213 and BIOL 2211L or equivalent.<br />

KINS589V Independent Research (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-3) Development, implementation,<br />

and completion <strong>of</strong> basic or applied research project. Prerequisite: M.S. degree program in<br />

exercise and movement sciences and HKRD 5353 and EDFD 5393.<br />

KINS605V Independent Study (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-3) Provides students with an opportunity<br />

to pursue special study <strong>of</strong> educational problems. May be repeated for up to 3 hours<br />

KINS6323 Biomechanics II (Odd years, Su) Analysis <strong>of</strong> human movement with<br />

emphasis on sports skills by application <strong>of</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> anatomy, kinesiology, and cinematographical<br />

analysis. Prerequisite: KINS 5323.<br />

KINS6343 Physiology <strong>of</strong> Exercise II (Even years, Su) Detailed study <strong>of</strong> the body<br />

systems affected by exercise, the functions <strong>of</strong> these systems during exercise, the effects <strong>of</strong><br />

age, sex, body type, and nutrition on capacity for exercise, the techniques <strong>of</strong> assessing work<br />

capacity, and a critical analysis <strong>of</strong> research literature in this area.<br />

HKRD5353 Research in Health Science, Kinesiology, Recreation and Dance<br />

and recreation including an analysis <strong>of</strong> examples <strong>of</strong> their use and practice in their application to<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> interest to the student.<br />

HKRD5873 Leadership in HKRD Services (Su) Considers research, theory, and<br />

practical applications <strong>of</strong> leadership principles utilized in the provision <strong>of</strong> HKRD services. Focus<br />

is on motivation, attitude, communication, group dynamics, and problem solving.<br />

HKRD5883 Sports Facilities Management (Sp) Considers basic elements and<br />

procedures in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance <strong>of</strong> sport facilities;<br />

management considerations in conducting various types <strong>of</strong> events.<br />

HKRD5893 Public and Private Finance in HKRD (Fa) Develops an understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> both public and private finance management for students in public and private management<br />

positions. Provides an understanding <strong>of</strong> the budgeting processes and techniques used<br />

in obtaining and controlling funds, including private sector finance problems in areas <strong>of</strong> credit,<br />

pricing, indexing, and debt management.<br />

HKRD6133 Issues in HKRD (Irregular) A review <strong>of</strong> the significant social, demographic,<br />

behavioral, developmental, and technological issues that influence health, kinesiology, and<br />

recreation programs. Pre- or Corequisite: for doctoral level students only.<br />

HKRD6233 Management in HKRD (Irregular) Deals with principles, procedures,<br />

relationships, problems, and current practices in the supervision <strong>of</strong> health education and kinesiology.<br />

Includes management <strong>of</strong> facilities, programs, personnel, and processes.<br />

HKRD689V Directed Research (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-6) Laboratory investigations, in basic<br />

and applied research.<br />

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PHED) (M.A.T., M.Ed.)<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree program is a 33-semesterhour<br />

degree program <strong>of</strong>fered in consecutive fall and spring semesters. Initial<br />

enrollment will be only in the fall semester. The M.A.T. degree is the initial<br />

teaching certification program for students at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Arkansas.<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> Concentration for the M.A.T.: Childhood education and<br />

secondary education.<br />

Prerequisites to M.A.T. Degree Program: Students will be selected up to<br />

the maximum number designated for each cohort area <strong>of</strong> emphasis. Admission<br />

requirements for the M.A.T. degree program for initial certification are<br />

as follows:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate undergraduate degree program<br />

2. Admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School<br />

3. Admission to Teacher Education Program<br />

4. Completion <strong>of</strong> the pre-education core with a minimum <strong>of</strong> “C” in<br />

all courses<br />

5. Completion <strong>of</strong> all prerequisite courses in teaching field<br />

6. Payment <strong>of</strong> internship fee.<br />
