CIED5132 Research in Middle Level Curriculum and Instruction (Fa) An<br />
introduction to inquiry and research in middle level curriculum and instruction. It examines the<br />
principles, strategies, and techniques <strong>of</strong> research, especially qualitative inquiry. Practicum in<br />
educational research and evaluation is done as part <strong>of</strong> the class. Prerequisite: Admission to<br />
the MAT program.<br />
CIED5143 Internship: Middle Level (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-6) The internship for middle<br />
level education is an extended field experience in which a pre-service teacher integrates<br />
knowledge and skills developed in education classes with practice in the field. Prerequisite:<br />
Admission to the M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5162 Applied Practicum (Fa) Provides laboratory experiences for RDNG 5123<br />
(Literacy Assessment) and RDNG 113 (Reading in Early Childhood Education). Corequisite:<br />
CIED 5183 and CIED 5173. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5173 Literacy Assessment and Intervention (Su, Fa) Focuses on assessment<br />
<strong>of</strong> young children’s literacy skills. Techniques discussed include informal observation,<br />
miscue analysis, and portfolio assessment. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate school.<br />
CIED5183 Readings in Early Childhood Education (Fa) Will continue to develop<br />
understandings <strong>of</strong> classic studies and will explore the impact these have had on the most<br />
recent issues in early childhood education. Prerequisite: Admission to the CHED M.A.T.<br />
CIED5193 Methods <strong>of</strong> Instruction for Middle School II (Fa) Second special methods<br />
course for teaching at the middle level. Emphasizes further refinement <strong>of</strong> teaching skills<br />
and methods; the integration <strong>of</strong> the sciences, mathematics, and technology; science, technology,<br />
and society (STS) issues; and the integration <strong>of</strong> social studies and English language arts.<br />
Prerequisite: CIED 5092 and admission to the M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5223 Issues and Principles <strong>of</strong> Secondary Education (Su) This course<br />
provides an introduction to the Secondary Education M.A.T. program. It provides the student<br />
with information about foundation issues in education, including history and philosophy <strong>of</strong><br />
American Education, current trends and issues in education, psychological and social theories<br />
<strong>of</strong> education, characteristics <strong>of</strong> learners, and learning processes. Prerequisite: Admission to<br />
M.A.T. degree program.<br />
CIED5232 Interdisciplinary <strong>Studies</strong> (Sp, Su, Fa) Introduction to the nature <strong>of</strong><br />
interdisciplinary study: curricular content, course planning (topics and themes), instructional<br />
strategies, and evaluation and assessment. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5243 Special Methods <strong>of</strong> Instruction I (Su) Study <strong>of</strong> the methods and materials<br />
in the special content areas. Includes philosophical, cognitive, and psychological dimensions<br />
<strong>of</strong> teaching the content area. The planning <strong>of</strong> instruction, microteaching, and the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> instructional materials are included. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5253 Special Methods <strong>of</strong> Instruction II (Fa) Study <strong>of</strong> the methods and materials<br />
in the special content areas. Classroom applications <strong>of</strong> teaching strategies with analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
teacher effectiveness in seminar settings. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5262 Special Methods <strong>of</strong> Instruction III (Sp) Study <strong>of</strong> the methods and materials<br />
in the special content areas. The focus is on student-centered and interdisciplinary teaching<br />
strategies. Extended content units are developed and implemented in the partnership school<br />
setting. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.A.T. Program.<br />
CIED5263 Measurement and Evaluation (Sp, Su, Fa) A study <strong>of</strong> measurement,<br />
testing, and evaluative procedures including types <strong>of</strong> tests, abuses <strong>of</strong> tests, test construction,<br />
scoring, analysis and interpretation, statistical methods, and alternative evaluation and assessment<br />
techniques. Prerequisite: Admission to the M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5273 Research in Curriculum and Instruction (Sp, Su, Fa) An introduction<br />
to inquiry and research in curriculum and instruction. It examines the principles, strategies, and<br />
techniques <strong>of</strong> research, especially qualitative inquiry. Qualitative method in assessment and<br />
evaluation are considered. Practicum in educational research and evaluation is done as part <strong>of</strong><br />

CIED528V Secondary Cohort Teaching Internship (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-6) May be<br />
repeated for up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> degree credit.<br />
CIED5293 Special Methods, Interdisciplinary Section (Sp) The third and final<br />
part <strong>of</strong> the middle level special methods course. Provides interns with the knowledge, dispositions,<br />
and skills for developing an interdisciplinary course <strong>of</strong> study in conjunction with the<br />
members <strong>of</strong> their interdisciplinary team. Prerequisite: CIED 5092 and CIED 5913 and admission<br />
to M.A.T. program.<br />
CIED5323 Transition Planning for Persons with Disabilities (Sp) Prepares<br />
students to plan, evaluate, and implement transition programs within both regular and special<br />
classrooms at the elementary, middle and secondary school levels.<br />
CIED532V Practicum in Special Education (Irregular) (1-6) Supervised field experiences<br />
in special education programs, schools, institutions, and other facilities for exceptional<br />
children.<br />
CIED5343 Applied Classroom Management (Fa) An advanced course in managing<br />
behaviors in students with exceptionalities. Students are provided with experiences in applying<br />
theoretical bases <strong>of</strong> classroom management through identifying, assessing graphing, and<br />
analyzing behavioral data and implementing management plans. Ethical issues in classroom<br />
management are addressed.<br />
CIED5353 Teaching Students with Diverse Needs in Middle Education Settings<br />
(Irregular) To provide future scholar-practitioners with a knowledge base concerning<br />
the issues involved in the successful instruction <strong>of</strong> persons with special learning needs during<br />
middle school years.<br />
CIED5403 Early Childhood Education: Rationale and Curriculum (Irregular)<br />
Rationale and curriculum <strong>of</strong> an early childhood education program, with special attention given<br />
curricular frameworks and pr<strong>of</strong>essional organization policies.<br />
CIED5413 Early Childhood Education: Methods and Materials (Irregular) An<br />
interdisciplinary approach to methods and materials used in early childhood education with<br />
emphasis on developmental literacy. Prerequisite: PSYC 3093 and CIED 5403.<br />
CIED5423 Curriculum Reconstruction (Sp, Su, Fa) Changes in curriculum<br />
development and design as related to changing social/economic/political arenas. Theories <strong>of</strong><br />
curriculum development, implementation and evaluation are researched.<br />
CIED5433 Methods and Materials for Teaching Children’s and Adolescent<br />
Literature (Sp, Su, Fa) Issues and trends in children’s literature. Contemporary works are<br />
evaluated and reviewed based on changing social political conditions. Multicultural approach to<br />

CIED5453 Evaluation Techniques (Irregular) Evaluation <strong>of</strong> learning using traditional<br />
means <strong>of</strong> assessment as well as alternative or authentic assessment techniques.<br />
CIED5473 Advanced Course in Children’s Literature (Irregular) Compares and<br />
contrasts contemporary award winning books with children’s classics, analyzing elements <strong>of</strong><br />
style. Focuses on use <strong>of</strong> rhetorical devices. Prerequisite: CIED 3103 and CIED 5433.<br />
CIED5483 Teaching Mathematics (Irregular) Content, methods, and materials for<br />
teaching multiple strands <strong>of</strong> elementary school mathematics. Emphasis on principles and<br />
procedures <strong>of</strong> a conceptual and integrated approach to learning mathematics. Prerequisite:<br />
Undergrad coursework in teaching elementary or early childhood mathematics.<br />
CIED5493 Teaching Social <strong>Studies</strong> (Irregular) Purpose, content, psychology,<br />
materials, and methods for teaching the social sciences in the elementary school. Emphasis on<br />
principles and procedures for combining the social studies with other areas <strong>of</strong> the curriculum in<br />
broad unit instruction. Prerequisite: Undergraduate coursework in teaching elementary or early<br />
childhood social studies.<br />
CIED5503 Teaching Science (Sp, Su, Fa) The influence <strong>of</strong> science on the community,<br />
on the home, and the child. Use <strong>of</strong> science in the living and learning <strong>of</strong> the child at school.<br />
CIED5533 Teaching Language Arts (Sp, Su, Fa) The place <strong>of</strong> the language arts in<br />
the elementary curriculum. Exploration <strong>of</strong> materials, content, practices, and methods, used in<br />
reading, speaking, listening, and writing experiences.<br />
CIED5573 Foundations <strong>of</strong> Literacy (Sp, Su, Fa) Teaching <strong>of</strong> reading to children;<br />
techniques, research, and modern practices.<br />
CIED5583 Correlates <strong>of</strong> Reading Process (Sp, Su, Fa) The developmental program<br />
is emphasized through a student <strong>of</strong> the reading process. Learning theory and research<br />
are related to reading instruction and materials through the development and application <strong>of</strong><br />
evaluative criteria based on an understanding <strong>of</strong> reading process. Prerequisite: CIED 5573.<br />
CIED5593 Advance Diagnosis and Intervention (Sp, Su, Fa) Emphasizes the<br />
diagnosis and remediation <strong>of</strong> reading difficulties in the classroom setting. Students are expected<br />
to become familiar with cause <strong>of</strong> reading failure, diagnosis instruments and procedures,<br />
principles <strong>of</strong> report writing, and corrective instructional methods and materials. The course<br />
is open to graduate students with instructor’s consent. Enrollment limited to 20. Prerequisite:<br />
CIED 5573.<br />
CIED5613 Contemporary Issues in Education (Sp, Su, Fa) A study <strong>of</strong> issues<br />
pertaining to the goals, objectives, organization, and curriculum <strong>of</strong> the schools with an analysis<br />
<strong>of</strong> the teacher’s role in dealing with current concerns in these areas.<br />
CIED5623 The School Curriculum (Sp, Su, Fa) General principles and techniques<br />
<strong>of</strong> selecting and organizing curricular materials.<br />
CIED5633 Analysis <strong>of</strong> Instruction (Sp, Su, Fa) A survey <strong>of</strong> the research and literature<br />
related to the systematic study <strong>of</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> teaching. An examination <strong>of</strong> the definitions <strong>of</strong><br />
teaching and the knowledge base on which teaching is predicated. A study <strong>of</strong> the implications<br />
<strong>of</strong> the research <strong>of</strong> effective teaching and the key curricular and instructional issues.<br />
CIED5653 Methods <strong>of</strong> Middle School Instruction (Sp, Su, Fa) Philosophy, rationale,<br />
and instructional practices <strong>of</strong> middle school instruction. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> standing.<br />
CIED567V Teaching Foreign Cultures in Social <strong>Studies</strong> Curricula (Sp, Su,<br />
Fa) (1-6) Extensive examination <strong>of</strong> foreign cultures (West Europe, USSR, China, Latin<br />
America) and methods <strong>of</strong> teaching about them in secondary school social studies.<br />
CIED5683 Adolescent Literature (Sp, Su, Fa) Content course in adolescent literature<br />
including selection, reading, evaluation, and psychological basis <strong>of</strong> classic and contemporary<br />
works. Prerequisite: PSYC 3093 or equivalent.<br />
CIED5723 Nature and Needs <strong>of</strong> Persons with Mild Disabilities (Fa) Educational,<br />
psychological, and social characteristics <strong>of</strong> individuals who have mild disabilities with emphasis<br />
on educational methods and modifications. Prerequisite: CIED 3023.<br />
CIED5733 Inclusive Practices for Diverse Populations (Su) An advanced study<br />
<strong>of</strong> the characteristics <strong>of</strong> persons with exceptional learning needs and the provision <strong>of</strong> appropriate<br />
instruction in the general education classroom. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> status.<br />
CIED5743 Teaching Persons With Physical and Health Disabilities (Sp)<br />
This course is an advanced course at the master’s level in the specialty studies. The Scholar<br />
Practitioner model at this level will pursue an in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the characteristics, needs, and<br />
methods for teaching <strong>of</strong> persons with physical and health disabilities while emphasizing advance<br />
learning in the specialty studies and the social and behavioral studies in the substantive<br />
areas. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> status.<br />
CIED5753 Nature and Needs <strong>of</strong> Persons with Serious Emotional Disorders<br />
(Irregular) A survey <strong>of</strong> the educational, psychological, and social characteristics <strong>of</strong> individuals<br />
with serious emotional disorders. Four major categories <strong>of</strong> behaviors (personality disorders,<br />
pervasive developmental disorders, and learning/behavior disorders) are reviewed in relationship<br />
to identification, assessment, and program intervention within the public school setting.<br />
Prerequisite: CIED 3023.<br />
CIED5763 Teaching Severely Handicapped Children (Sp) Methods and materials<br />
for teaching students with severe handicaps, including severe mental retardation, serious<br />
emotional disturbance, and severe physical disabilities.<br />
CIED5773 Methods for Young Children with Disabilities (Irregular) This course<br />
is one <strong>of</strong> the substantive core courses required <strong>of</strong> all students being recommended for the<br />
P-4 Instructional Specialist license. The Scholar-Practitioner Model at this level provides an<br />
introduction to the education <strong>of</strong> young children with special learning needs and a foundation for<br />
the developing pr<strong>of</strong>essional.<br />
CIED5783 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional and Family Partnerships (Sp) This course is an advanced<br />
course at the master’s level in the specialty studies. The Scholar Practitioner model at this<br />
level will pursue an in-depth study <strong>of</strong> family-school partnerships from early childhood through<br />
the transition to adulthood while emphasizing advance learning in the specialty studies and the<br />
social and behavioral studies in the substantive areas. Prerequisite: Admission to graduate<br />
school.<br />
CIED5793 Practicum in Literacy (Sp, Su, Fa) Laboratory experience in which<br />
students diagnose reading difficulties and practice remedial measures under the direct<br />
supervision <strong>of</strong> the instructor. Emphasis is given to continuous diagnosis and to the use <strong>of</strong><br />
commercially produced materials and trade books in remediation. Enrollment limited to 15.<br />
