as a second language (ESL), language arts, mathematics, science, children’s<br />
literature, social studies, early childhood education, reading, special education, or<br />
general elementary education; 3 hours <strong>of</strong> electives; and 9 core hours, including<br />
ESRM 5013 Research Methods in Education and three hours from each <strong>of</strong> the<br />
areas listed below. The required research course (ESRM 5013) is to be taken<br />
during the first 12 hours <strong>of</strong> degree coursework. (The major adviser must approve<br />

All candidates who receive the master’s degree in elementary education must<br />
pass the master’s comprehensive examination. The M.Ed. is designed for experienced<br />
teachers who have the goal <strong>of</strong> expanding pr<strong>of</strong>essional competence. The<br />
M.Ed. program does not meet requirements for state licensure. Students seeking<br />
state licensure should pursue enrollment in the M.A.T. program in Childhood<br />
Education (preK – Grade 4) or Middle Level Education (Grade 4 – Grade 8).<br />
Teachers having the goal <strong>of</strong> improving pr<strong>of</strong>essional competence in reading<br />
and <strong>of</strong> qualifying for the Arkansas Reading Specialist Licensure Endorsement,<br />
Grades P – 8 and 7 – 12 may take graduate courses in reading as part <strong>of</strong> their<br />

Additional Licensure: The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Arkansas <strong>of</strong>fers additional<br />
licensure in Middle-Level Education. This program allows individuals with<br />
an Arkansas teaching license in P-4 or 7-12 to add a teaching license in grades<br />
5 and 6.<br />
Prerequisites to the Middle-Level ALP Program: Students will be selected<br />
if they are licensed childhood education or secondary education teachers<br />
who wish to add a teaching license in grades 5 and 6. Students must first be<br />
admitted to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School.<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree program in Middle Level<br />
Education is a 34-semester hour program. The M.A.T. degree is the initial<br />
licensure program for students at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Arkansas, Fayetteville. The<br />
program will no longer be accepting students, but will continue to hold classes<br />
until May 2011.<br />
Admission Requirements:<br />
1. Completion <strong>of</strong> a B.S.E. in Middle Level Education (Social <strong>Studies</strong>/English,<br />
English/Social <strong>Studies</strong>, Math/Science or Science/Math)<br />
2. Passing Scores on Praxis I and Praxis II Middle Level Content<br />
