for Underutilised Crops, University of Southampton, UK, for offering this
prestigious assignment to write a book on Adansonia digitata, considered as
the most valued tree by the rural populations in the semi-arid lowlands of
West Africa. I am greatly indebted to John Sheuring, Foundation Syngenta
and to Dr. Amadou Niang, Co-ordinator of the ICRAF Sahel program for the
provision of data on baobab. My special thanks to Mauro Ottaviani and all of
