Puttin’ on the
Ritz…Cracker
A Huge Success!
Our first annual “Puttin’ On The Ritz… Cracker!” on
November 12 was wonderful, fun-filled night. Families,
kids included, came dressed up in their fancy clothes,
ready to dance and have a great time. The sparkling
decorations, lighting, music and balloons gave the
JCC Auditorium a festive backdrop for this great new
event. Participants were treated to a magic show and
danced the night away with upbeat tunes from very
our D.J. Eric Smith.
The Ritz Crackers schmears were skillfully served by
UA fraternity ZBT waiters, along with a smorgasbord
of food and a children’s drink bar. Kids enjoyed balloon
animals and face painting by a clown, while others got
their pictures taken and put on picture magnets, while
still others made special top hats at the children’s activity
table. It was a magical night for all, and we look
forward to the next one in 2012.
We especially thank all the people and vendors
whose support made our event as special as
it was:
Come and enjoy the
JCC Sculpture Garden
An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision.
-James Whistler
Tucked away on the south side of the JCC is a true Tucson treasure, the
Sculpture Garden. Now in its third year, the Garden continues to grow
and thrive with new pieces being added to the Garden as well as an-ever
growing permanent collection.
The Sculpture Garden was created during tough economic times and
was brought to life by generous donations, allowing the JCC to become
home to arts from across the world.
This year, there are 21 new pieces in the exhibition; one on loan from
artist Tidi Ozieri. Seven pieces have been extended from last year’s
exhibit and there are 20 in the permanent collection, bringing the total
sculpture count to an impressive 48.
The outdoor setting of the Garden is the perfect place to take out-oftown
guests, hold a special event, or simply spend time
taking a stroll and enjoying the art. So step outside the
J into the Garden and feel the energy.
Let’s Stay in Touch
One of our biggest challenges at
the J is letting you, our members,
know when something fabulous is
happening, whether it is an event,
a program or maybe just something
interesting about us. With
so many new ways to communicate
electronically, we are excited
to try innovate ways to reach you.
But don’t worry, we won’t abandon
our traditional forms of communication.
We only hope that you
take a chance and try a new way of
Communicating with your friends
at the J!
Join the
Conversation
Facebook: The JCC has been on
Facebook for a few years and we
love it! This is our opportunity to
share tidbits of information with
you and get your immediate responses.
We also share informal
pictures here: a Zumba class that
looks fun, bright colored birds sitting
on sculptures in the Garden
and so on. We love our Facebook
fans and hope to continue to build
that fan base. If you aren’t already
a fan, you can become one at www.
span? Then Twitter is the best way
for you to communicate with us.
In 140 characters or less we share
QR Codes: Have you seen these
bar codes everywhere and wondered
what they are? You’re not
alone. Recently we read an article
that said QR Codes are not used
as much as they should be used
mainly because people don’t know
how to use them. So here’s the
scoop: if you have a smart phone
you need to visit a site that allows
you to download a QR code scanner.
One of those sites is www.
mobile-barcodes.com/qr-codesoftware/
Once you have the application
installed on your phone, you can
simply open the app at the barcode
and scan it. Need practice? Turn
this Center View over and scan
the code on the upper-right-hand
corner to visit our website. It’s just
that simple!
E-Blasts: We send out eblasts on
a regular basis, which are simply
electronic newsletters. If you have
provided the membership department
with your email address,
then you will receive our eblasts. If
you haven’t done that yet, feel free
to stop by the Welcome Desk and
give them your email address or
email dsutton@tucsonjcc.org and
he will update your information.
JCC Website: Our website was
redesigned just over a year ago
and it is chock full of information
about the J and our programs.
The best part about it is that it is
updated frequently. You can see
what’s happening on any given day
as well as pay for tickets to events,
renew your membership and so
much more.
We will continue to send you this
newsletter five times a year and
you can always call us or stop by to
ask questions. We just want to give
you as many ways to speak to us as
possible. We would love to speak
with you.
Fitness Forum
Troy Pearson,
Director of Personal Training
“What is the best way to get the
most out of a cardiovascular
workout when you have a busy
schedule and limited time to go to
the gym?”
The best way to maximize your
results is to do intervals. Intervals
can be done on any cardio machine.
Whether you goal is weight loss or
to improve your cardiovascular
fitness, intervals are the most
effective.
The duration of an interval is
usually one to four minutes. On a
Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
scale of one to 10, the intensity of
an interval should be nine or 10.
Recovery between intervals is 30
seconds to a minute. Then, repeat.
Depending on the duration of the
interval, you should perform three
to 10 intervals during a 40-minute
cardio workout. The high intensity
of intervals burns more calories
and expands your cardiovascular
fitness in the shortest amount of
time, which is ideal for people with
a busy schedule.
