Bringing the Energy of the
“J” to the Community
Moving
• Punk Rope and Zumba classes were added to the already impressive
number of free classes offered to members.
• Membership numbers continued strong due in part to the popularity of
Silver Sneakers, and also the more than 600 new individuals and families
who joined.
Playing
• The Youth Lounge came to life offering kids in grades 6-12 state-of-theart
computers, electronic systems and games, and a great place to hang
out.
• The annual B’sghetti Bash fundraiser continued to be a strength from
both the financial aspect as well as the volunteer support.
Learning
• SeniorNet offered computer classes geared toward seniors, which included
significant upgrades to the JCC computer lab.
• Early Childhood Education expanded the supplemental afternoon enrichment
classes, enhancing the opportunities for the children in the
program.
Connecting
• Young Jewish Tucson joined the JCCA Gesher City Network online allowing
them to stay connected to other young Jewish adults in Tucson
and across the country.
• Thirty-one personal listening devices were added to all of the aerobic
machines in the fitness center. Members can now enjoy the four new 42”
plasma televisions with sound, or simply listen to music.

STATE OF THE J
Dear Friends,
In these economically challenging times it’s nice to know
that the J is still here offering quality programming. Don’t
get me wrong, the J still experiences the same challenges
facing individuals and businesses everywhere, yet we find
ourselves able to meet those challenges well and are optimistic
about the future of the Tucson Jewish Community
Center.
ECE and J-Care still provide the same excellent experience
for our youngsters. Dropping by the J in the afternoon,
you can’t miss kids playing and having fun! Unfortunately,
we’re losing children, and many youngsters who are still in
ECE and J-Care spend less time at the J. Parents losing jobs
is a key factor. We can only continue to provide an excellent
experience and ride out the tough times.
Our Sports and Wellness department has offered some
pleasant surprises. Usage is increasing. Recreational
leagues are growing, partly because of cutbacks in City of
Tucson offerings. Strength in sports and wellness helps the
bottom line with increased revenue from leagues and personal
training; more significantly, we benefit from having
our members use our facilities intensively. Nothing helps
membership retention more than having happy members
use the J to stay physically fit!
Arts & Culture is thriving at the J. We’ve just completed
another successful Film Festival. We’ve been reorganizing
our lay committee structure, looking to expand the engagement
of Film Festival volunteers into other areas. In the
meantime, we continue to provide quality programming
that nourishes the mind and spirit.

In 2008 we painted the building – first time in 20 years. We
also replaced boilers. Nothing glamorous, but all of it was
done with repair and replacement money set aside from operating
funds for these purposes.
Our management team and our lay leaders have always
complemented one another, providing the leadership that
makes our J great! In the past year, though, we recognized
that while our board has fulfilled its governance functions
very well, we need to expect more from our lay leaders in
these difficult times. We are asking our board members to
be more engaged with the J in ways that go beyond simply
showing up and making decisions. To have our board perform
at this higher level, we knew we needed to put more
effort and energy into selecting, training and supporting
board members. We committed lots of time and energy to
this project and we’re already seeing positive results.
We wish we were living in better times, for so many reasons,
and we appreciate your support as you face many
challenges. We also know we’ll all survive, that we’re better
off than many others, and that the J is doing its part to meet
our communities’ physical, mental, emotional and spiritual
needs. Through good times and bad the one thing that is a
constant is the positive energy you feel as you walk through
the TJCC. Thank you for a being a part of this wonderful
community!
Mark Rubin

Adult Life
Our Adult Life department continues to
build on the popularity of existing programs
such as Current Events; Young at
Heart; Memories, Music and Mishegoss;
Mah Jongg and Spouse Bereavement Support.
As the composition of the adult population
changes, exploring the interests of
this dynamic group prompted the establishment
of an adult task force. Comprised
of participants and non-participants of
varying ages, this task force has been challenged
to suggest new programming possibilities
that will complement and broaden
the range of options offered. The ultimate
goal is to increase participation and broaden
the age range of participants.
Arts & Culture
The JCC Art Gallery continues to be an
excellent venue to showcase talented artists.
The year was also filled with lectures,
workshops and classes on a variety of topics
– many in collaboration with other Jewish
agencies and the greater Tucson community.
2008 was an excellent year for the
Film Festival. Record-breaking audiences
came out to view the excellent array of independent
films from all over the world.
This event is becoming a staple in Tucson’s
cultural calendar. The Sculpture Garden
was created and is sure to be a premiere art
venue in Tucson.

Catering & Rentals
Catering & rentals contribute a significant
amount of revenue to the annual budget
through a smooth arrangement of a wide
variety of special occasions – professional
conferences, fundraisers, and other events
that occupy the auditorium and meeting
rooms throughout the year. Continual upgrades
to the facilities allow us more opportunities
for rentals. This year the major
improvement was upgrading the sound
system in the auditorium.
Children, Youth &
Camping
Summer camp was a success, both in quality
and overall enrollment. In 2008, Camp
Shalom saw an increase in total numbers.
Family events included the “All Chocolate
Seder,” entertaining and educating 30 families
about the joys and history of Passover.
Our “Dive N’ Dine” series was well received
bringing in 86 people. “Homework Hangout”,
the J-Care homework program, led by
a Masters Education Major, has developed
into one of the highest quality tutoring
programs in Tucson. Saturday Nights Out
provides opportunities for parents to enjoy
a night out on the town while their children
spend an evening at the “J”. We have
seen a steady increase in enrollment and
now offer programs for pre-K – 5th grades.
The J-Care program had higher enrollment
numbers than in past years for the first half
of 2008; however the second half saw decreased
numbers due to national economic
changes.

Early Childhood
Education
Our Early Childhood Education is accredited
through the National Association for
the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)
and provides a vibrant environment of playbased
learning and development for infants,
toddlers and preschool-aged children. ECE
recognizes parents as their children’s first
and best teacher and they are encouraged
to participate in all ECE activities, both in
and out of their child’s classroom experience.
Parent volunteers are invaluable to
the program and many parents volunteer
well beyond the program’s annual 10-hour
requirement.
A new focus for us this year was the expansion
of our supplemental afternoon enrichment
classes. By using the talents of some
of our full-time teachers, we added new
offerings such as Spanish, sign language,
puppet making and art.
Membership
During 2008, we offered over 250 membership scholarships to make participation affordable
to those who need it most, serving both new and existing members. Membership
revenue continued strong in 2008, with a 3.9% increase over 2007, and, within $1,500
of budget, with no dues increase. Membership dollars support and sustain a full range
of ac tivities that include sports, fitness, and wellness initiatives, Camp J offerings, Early
Childhood Education programs, rich cultural arts programs, educational lectures, enrichment
classes, and wonderful opportunities for socializing. From our greater visibility
on Alvernon, to the reputation of our programs, our presence and quality brought over
600 new individuals and families into our community. The ongoing evolution of the “Face
of the J”, both in physical improvements, program diversity, and a consistent marketing
image, will make us the place where members want to stay awhile, chat, relax, and connect
with others.

Special Needs Services
Special Needs Services is a new department
that was created to serve children and young
adults with special needs. The “Taglit” program,
which serves young adults (16-25),
provides monthly socials and summer and
winter camp inclusion programs. These
programs offer opportunities for children
with special needs to participate fully in
camp and other activities.
Sports & Wellness
Our personal training department has
reached all time highs in numbers of members
using the service, keeping the seven
trainers busy. The adult and youth leagues
are well attended with new people joining
each season. Our leagues include basketball,
volleyball, softball and flag football.
Our youth swim teams have reached all
time highs in registration and performance.
The Master Swim team had an all
time high registration of over 24 members.
We took 22 athletes who competed in seven
different sports at the annual JCC Maccabi
Games in San Diego. We won medals
in each sport and returned home with 19
medals. We’ve added four new giant circulating
fans to the Marmis Gym – a huge
improvement! The addition of the fans has
immensely lowered the temperature in the
gym and is pleasant year-round.

FUND DEVELOPMENT
The JCC gratefully acknowledges the following individuals, companies, organizations
and foundations for their support of our many programs and offerings. Membership dues
are not enough to maintain the excellent programming we enjoy, maintain the building
we love and serve the community. Donor support dollars bridge the gap and we thank the
following people for contributing to the success of the JCC.
Community Partners
These partnerships are essential to
thank you for your support. We apologize
2008 Financial Highlights
What can we say about the challenges of the economy, and its effects on our 2008 financial
picture? Each one of you reading this has probably seen your retirement plans and other
investments decline in value. You may have experienced a loss in income as the economy
suffered and the JCC is not immune to the repercussions of an economy in crisis.
Our endowment funds had a significant decline in value (about 29%), reducing the income
available to provide services and scholarships. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg
Fund, the largest of our endowments, was reduced by $882,000 in value due to market
conditions. Many of our donors were unable to be as generous to us in 2008, and this also
hurt our financial health.
Some program participants cut back or dropped for financial reasons. As a result of reduced
income, we were not able to transfer the full budgeted amount into our repair and
replacement fund. We instituted a salary freeze, and reduced the contribution made to
our employees’ pension plan accounts for 2009.
On the positive side, we are still here every day, providing the quality services our members
depend on.
Our core areas of Early Childhood and Membership are doing well. Our Finance Committee
and Board work alongside staff in monitoring the financial situation and recommending
changes as needed. We are optimistic that for 2009, the Financial Highlights will
improve.
For more detailed information you can request a copy of our 2008 audited financial statements
from the JCC accounting office. A copy of our 990 is available through a link on our
web site or through the Guide Star web site.
As always, we express our genuine gratitude to our wonderful donors who help make our
programs possible and affordable to scholarship recipients. Scholarships and discounts
totaled almost $450,000 in 2008.
