Bringing the Energy of the<br />

“J” to the <strong>Community</strong><br />

Moving<br />

• Punk Rope and Zumba classes were added to the already impressive<br />

number of free classes offered to members.<br />

• Membership numbers continued strong due in part to the popularity of<br />

Silver Sneakers, and also the more than 600 new individuals and families<br />

who joined.<br />

Playing<br />

• The Youth Lounge came to life offering kids in grades 6-12 state-of-theart<br />

computers, electronic systems and games, and a great place to hang<br />

out.<br />

• The annual B’sghetti Bash fundraiser continued to be a strength from<br />

both the financial aspect as well as the volunteer support.<br />

Learning<br />

• SeniorNet offered computer classes geared toward seniors, which included<br />

significant upgrades to the JCC computer lab.<br />

• Early Childhood Education expanded the supplemental afternoon enrichment<br />

classes, enhancing the opportunities for the children in the<br />

program.<br />

Connecting<br />

• Young <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Tucson</strong> joined the JCCA Gesher City Network online allowing<br />

them to stay connected to other young <strong>Jewish</strong> adults in <strong>Tucson</strong><br />

and across the country.<br />

• Thirty-one personal listening devices were added to all of the aerobic<br />

machines in the fitness center. Members can now enjoy the four new 42”<br />

plasma televisions with sound, or simply listen to music.


STATE OF THE J<br />

Dear Friends,<br />

In these economically challenging times it’s nice to know<br />

that the J is still here offering quality programming. Don’t<br />

get me wrong, the J still experiences the same challenges<br />

facing individuals and businesses everywhere, yet we find<br />

ourselves able to meet those challenges well and are optimistic<br />

about the future of the <strong>Tucson</strong> <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />

<strong>Center</strong>.<br />

ECE and J-Care still provide the same excellent experience<br />

for our youngsters. Dropping by the J in the afternoon,<br />

you can’t miss kids playing and having fun! Unfortunately,<br />

we’re losing children, and many youngsters who are still in<br />

ECE and J-Care spend less time at the J. Parents losing jobs<br />

is a key factor. We can only continue to provide an excellent<br />

experience and ride out the tough times.<br />

Our Sports and Wellness department has offered some<br />

pleasant surprises. Usage is increasing. Recreational<br />

leagues are growing, partly because of cutbacks in City of<br />

<strong>Tucson</strong> offerings. Strength in sports and wellness helps the<br />

bottom line with increased revenue from leagues and personal<br />

training; more significantly, we benefit from having<br />

our members use our facilities intensively. Nothing helps<br />

membership retention more than having happy members<br />

use the J to stay physically fit!<br />

Arts & Culture is thriving at the J. We’ve just completed<br />

another successful Film Festival. We’ve been reorganizing<br />

our lay committee structure, looking to expand the engagement<br />

of Film Festival volunteers into other areas. In the<br />

meantime, we continue to provide quality programming<br />

that nourishes the mind and spirit.


In <strong>2008</strong> we painted the building – first time in 20 years. We<br />

also replaced boilers. Nothing glamorous, but all of it was<br />

done with repair and replacement money set aside from operating<br />

funds for these purposes.<br />

Our management team and our lay leaders have always<br />

complemented one another, providing the leadership that<br />

makes our J great! In the past year, though, we recognized<br />

that while our board has fulfilled its governance functions<br />

very well, we need to expect more from our lay leaders in<br />

these difficult times. We are asking our board members to<br />

be more engaged with the J in ways that go beyond simply<br />

showing up and making decisions. To have our board perform<br />

at this higher level, we knew we needed to put more<br />

effort and energy into selecting, training and supporting<br />

board members. We committed lots of time and energy to<br />

this project and we’re already seeing positive results.<br />

We wish we were living in better times, for so many reasons,<br />

and we appreciate your support as you face many<br />

challenges. We also know we’ll all survive, that we’re better<br />

off than many others, and that the J is doing its part to meet<br />

our communities’ physical, mental, emotional and spiritual<br />

needs. Through good times and bad the one thing that is a<br />

constant is the positive energy you feel as you walk through<br />

the TJCC. Thank you for a being a part of this wonderful<br />

community!<br />

Mark Rubin


Adult Life<br />

Our Adult Life department continues to<br />

build on the popularity of existing programs<br />

such as Current Events; Young at<br />

Heart; Memories, Music and Mishegoss;<br />

Mah Jongg and Spouse Bereavement Support.<br />

As the composition of the adult population<br />

changes, exploring the interests of<br />

this dynamic group prompted the establishment<br />

of an adult task force. Comprised<br />

of participants and non-participants of<br />

varying ages, this task force has been challenged<br />

to suggest new programming possibilities<br />

that will complement and broaden<br />

the range of options offered. The ultimate<br />

goal is to increase participation and broaden<br />

the age range of participants.<br />

Arts & Culture<br />

The JCC Art Gallery continues to be an<br />

excellent venue to showcase talented artists.<br />

The year was also filled with lectures,<br />

workshops and classes on a variety of topics<br />

– many in collaboration with other <strong>Jewish</strong><br />

agencies and the greater <strong>Tucson</strong> community.<br />

<strong>2008</strong> was an excellent year for the<br />

Film Festival. Record-breaking audiences<br />

came out to view the excellent array of independent<br />

films from all over the world.<br />

This event is becoming a staple in <strong>Tucson</strong>’s<br />

cultural calendar. The Sculpture Garden<br />

was created and is sure to be a premiere art<br />

venue in <strong>Tucson</strong>.


Catering & Rentals<br />

Catering & rentals contribute a significant<br />

amount of revenue to the annual budget<br />

through a smooth arrangement of a wide<br />

variety of special occasions – professional<br />

conferences, fundraisers, and other events<br />

that occupy the auditorium and meeting<br />

rooms throughout the year. Continual upgrades<br />

to the facilities allow us more opportunities<br />

for rentals. This year the major<br />

improvement was upgrading the sound<br />

system in the auditorium.<br />

Children, Youth &<br />

Camping<br />

Summer camp was a success, both in quality<br />

and overall enrollment. In <strong>2008</strong>, Camp<br />

Shalom saw an increase in total numbers.<br />

Family events included the “All Chocolate<br />

Seder,” entertaining and educating 30 families<br />

about the joys and history of Passover.<br />

Our “Dive N’ Dine” series was well received<br />

bringing in 86 people. “Homework Hangout”,<br />

the J-Care homework program, led by<br />

a Masters Education Major, has developed<br />

into one of the highest quality tutoring<br />

programs in <strong>Tucson</strong>. Saturday Nights Out<br />

provides opportunities for parents to enjoy<br />

a night out on the town while their children<br />

spend an evening at the “J”. We have<br />

seen a steady increase in enrollment and<br />

now offer programs for pre-K – 5th grades.<br />

The J-Care program had higher enrollment<br />

numbers than in past years for the first half<br />

of <strong>2008</strong>; however the second half saw decreased<br />

numbers due to national economic<br />

changes.


Early Childhood<br />

Education<br />

Our Early Childhood Education is accredited<br />

through the National Association for<br />

the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)<br />

and provides a vibrant environment of playbased<br />

learning and development for infants,<br />

toddlers and preschool-aged children. ECE<br />

recognizes parents as their children’s first<br />

and best teacher and they are encouraged<br />

to participate in all ECE activities, both in<br />

and out of their child’s classroom experience.<br />

Parent volunteers are invaluable to<br />

the program and many parents volunteer<br />

well beyond the program’s annual 10-hour<br />

requirement.<br />

A new focus for us this year was the expansion<br />

of our supplemental afternoon enrichment<br />

classes. By using the talents of some<br />

of our full-time teachers, we added new<br />

offerings such as Spanish, sign language,<br />

puppet making and art.<br />

Membership<br />

During <strong>2008</strong>, we offered over 250 membership scholarships to make participation affordable<br />

to those who need it most, serving both new and existing members. Membership<br />

revenue continued strong in <strong>2008</strong>, with a 3.9% increase over 2007, and, within $1,500<br />

of budget, with no dues increase. Membership dollars support and sustain a full range<br />

of ac tivities that include sports, fitness, and wellness initiatives, Camp J offerings, Early<br />

Childhood Education programs, rich cultural arts programs, educational lectures, enrichment<br />

classes, and wonderful opportunities for socializing. From our greater visibility<br />

on Alvernon, to the reputation of our programs, our presence and quality brought over<br />

600 new individuals and families into our community. The ongoing evolution of the “Face<br />

of the J”, both in physical improvements, program diversity, and a consistent marketing<br />

image, will make us the place where members want to stay awhile, chat, relax, and connect<br />

with others.


Special Needs Services<br />

Special Needs Services is a new department<br />

that was created to serve children and young<br />

adults with special needs. The “Taglit” program,<br />

which serves young adults (16-25),<br />

provides monthly socials and summer and<br />

winter camp inclusion programs. These<br />

programs offer opportunities for children<br />

with special needs to participate fully in<br />

camp and other activities.<br />

Sports & Wellness<br />

Our personal training department has<br />

reached all time highs in numbers of members<br />

using the service, keeping the seven<br />

trainers busy. The adult and youth leagues<br />

are well attended with new people joining<br />

each season. Our leagues include basketball,<br />

volleyball, softball and flag football.<br />

Our youth swim teams have reached all<br />

time highs in registration and performance.<br />

The Master Swim team had an all<br />

time high registration of over 24 members.<br />

We took 22 athletes who competed in seven<br />

different sports at the annual JCC Maccabi<br />

Games in San Diego. We won medals<br />

in each sport and returned home with 19<br />

medals. We’ve added four new giant circulating<br />

fans to the Marmis Gym – a huge<br />

improvement! The addition of the fans has<br />

immensely lowered the temperature in the<br />

gym and is pleasant year-round.

are not enough to maintain the excellent programming we enjoy, maintain the building<br />

we love and serve the community. Donor support dollars bridge the gap and we thank the<br />

<strong>2008</strong> Financial Highlights<br />

What can we say about the challenges of the economy, and its effects on our <strong>2008</strong> financial<br />

picture? Each one of you reading this has probably seen your retirement plans and other<br />

investments decline in value. You may have experienced a loss in income as the economy<br />

suffered and the JCC is not immune to the repercussions of an economy in crisis.<br />

Our endowment funds had a significant decline in value (about 29%), reducing the income<br />

available to provide services and scholarships. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg<br />

Fund, the largest of our endowments, was reduced by $882,000 in value due to market<br />

conditions. Many of our donors were unable to be as generous to us in <strong>2008</strong>, and this also<br />

hurt our financial health.<br />

Some program participants cut back or dropped for financial reasons. As a result of reduced<br />

income, we were not able to transfer the full budgeted amount into our repair and<br />

replacement fund. We instituted a salary freeze, and reduced the contribution made to<br />

our employees’ pension plan accounts for 2009.<br />

On the positive side, we are still here every day, providing the quality services our members<br />

depend on.<br />

Our core areas of Early Childhood and Membership are doing well. Our Finance Committee<br />

and Board work alongside staff in monitoring the financial situation and recommending<br />

changes as needed. We are optimistic that for 2009, the Financial Highlights will<br />

improve.<br />

As always, we express our genuine gratitude to our wonderful donors who help make our<br />

programs possible and affordable to scholarship recipients. Scholarships and discounts<br />

totaled almost $450,000 in <strong>2008</strong>.
