Annual
Report
From the Board Chair
The mission of the Tucson Jewish Community
Center is to cultivate and enrich Jewish
identity, ensure Jewish continuity, foster
wellness, and broaden communal harmony.
It’s truly an exciting time to be a part of the J. Not
only are we continuing to thrive programmatically
and fiscally, but we are exploring new avenues
of growth in all areas, including expanding the
Sports & Wellness area, developing a new space for
Special Needs Services, and enhancing the Jewish
Heritage Center with a retractable wall that opens
to the Sculpture Garden. The fact is, we are looking
for new and innovative ways to do the things that
we have always done, but do them better.
This past year welcomed new family events such
as Puttin’ on the Ritz…Cracker! and also continued
to build audiences for existing initiatives such
as the Third Annual Juried Sculpture Garden
Exhibition. We hope that you have taken advantage
of everything the JCC has to offer and maybe even
tried something new. Our hope is that we are
also reaching the greater Tucson community and
having a big impact on members of the community
that may not have heard about what we do or who
we are. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the J;
you just have to love being part of a full, robust
community that is open to everyone!
I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize those of you
who volunteered your time or money to ensure the
J’s future. Whether you give a few hours of time to
volunteer at our Film Festival or spend countless
hours as a Board Member or serve on a committee,
we couldn’t offer the breadth of activities without
you! Likewise, your donations to all our wonderful
programs from Send a Kid to Camp to the Big
Ticket Raffle plus commitments to the Legacy
Circle with planned gifts, are essential to keep
the daily activities up and running, but also
guarantee that we have the resources available to
continue to improve all our services and facilities
while ensuring the J will be here for many more
generations.
As the Board Chair, I am proud to be a part of all
this growth and ask you to continue to support the
J through participation in our programs, through
donations, through your service. You are the key
to “Building Our Future!”
Chair, Board of Directors
2011 Highlights
Sports & Wellness
• The cardio equipment (treadmills, elliptical
cross-trainers, upright and recumbent exercise
bikes) was upgraded with new machines, each
with a 17” widescreen TV that is ergonomically
designed to maximize sight lines and reduce
glare for people of various heights. They also
include iPod integration which allows users to
charge their iPod and manage their playlists.
Arts & Culture
• The Sundance Film Institute chose
our Media Arts Center as one of
a handful of venues around the
world to host their Film Forward
cultural exchange program, a
direct result of our partnership
with The Loft Cinema.
• More than 500 adults a month
continue to benefit from our
art classes, lectures and special
interest groups.
Children & Youth
• Family Programs offered a new event, Puttin’ On The
Ritz…Cracker! It was a fun, gala event specifically
planned to get families with children of all ages
together for a dress-up evening of food, dancing,
magic and entertainment. It was also a chance to
have party vendors showcase their services at the
vendor booths. The event was profitable and had
over 200 attendees.
Early Childhood
Education
•
The enthusiastic new co-directors hit the ground
running with building improvements–fresh
new paint in every classroom and upgraded
flooring. The teaching staff received extensive
training, including a field trip to observe several
Tucson preschools, learn from them, and adapt
best practices in their own classrooms.
Special Needs
Services
•
Special Needs Services received two grants
for the Winter Camp program: one from
the Sundt foundation; the other from the
Safeway Foundation. These grants allowed
us to provide dynamic programming and
send participants to exciting places such
as the Biosphere.
Arts & Culture
The Arts & Culture Department collaborated
with community agencies such as Tucson-Pima
Arts Council, Tucson Symphony Orchestra,
the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies and the
Holocaust Education Resource Center of the
Coalition for Jewish Education to bring dynamic,
multi-faceted programming to the JCC.
The Fine Art Gallery hosted 14 exhibitions in a
variety of media, including two traveling shows
and a special installation commemorating the
10th anniversary of September 11, 2001.
Art historian and critic, Dr. Elaine A. King of
Carnegie Mellon University, curated the 3rd
Annual Sculpture Garden Exhibition and chose
20 new pieces for installation in the Garden. The
permanent collection continues to grow with
generous donations of art.
The Tucson International Jewish Film Festival
celebrated two decades of entertaining, educating
and inspiring audiences with the magic and power
of cinema. More than 2,000 people attended film
screenings at four venues in Pima County and,
for the third year in a row, the Fabulous Faygeleh
Series offered LGBT-themed films of Jewish
content that would not otherwise find an audience
in our community.
We strive to be an
outstanding (perhaps
the pre-eminent)
Jewish Community
Center in America
as evidenced by:
• A steady increase in Jewish
Connections
• A hamish (comfortable, “at home”)
atmosphere with respect and a sense
of belonging
• Sound financial results
• Strong programs demonstrated by
quality, quantity, and fit with our
mission
• A state-of-the-art, clean, safe,
functional, well-maintained facility
• Present and developing leadership
comprised of energized staff,
volunteers, and members committed
to mission, vision, and high levels of
mutual satisfaction
• A place of esteem and respect as
viewed by the broader community,
including a commitment to expose
and share the richness and tradition
of Jewish culture with members of
the non-Jewish Community
Children & Youth
Catering & Rentals
The number of events and revenue totals increased and we welcomed a number of new clients
to our facility due in part to a new part-time outside sales coordinator. This person focused on
representing the JCC at various networking events and increasing our profile throughout Tucson.
We created a new marketing sales piece that was widely distributed at all the networking events we
attended. The Media Arts Center continued to be a great sales generator with many corporate and
private groups renting our Ballroom to use the state-of-the-art equipment.
The Children and Youth department exceeded budget
projections for 2011. We saw most of the higher
unit numbers with grades K-2 (ages 5-7), which is
encouraging for future growth.
Camp “J” continues to grow with an increase in total
numbers. For the first time, we reached over 100
children in the Camp Shalom program for grades
K-2. Overall, our increase was more than 15% of our
2011 projections. Part of the success of Camp “J” is the
return of nearly 85% of staff members from previous
years, whose enthusiasm, creativity and genuine
passion adds to the overall positive environment.
J-Care continues its upward slope of increasing
numbers. J-Care currently services 27 schools.
Early Childhood
Education
Early Childhood classes grew in 2011
and revenue increased. Now in its
second year, the kindergarten class also
continued to grow.
We have embraced participation in
the Quality First Early Education
program of Arizona’s First Things
First. Through the initiative, we receive
regular evaluations and feedback to
improve our program and funding to
make those improvements a reality.
Our 28th Annual B’sghetti Bash
fundraiser was a great success with
many volunteers and great auction
items available. Families joined the fun
of the event and we raised more than
$15,000.
The Tucson Jewish Community Center Values:
• Jewish roots, history,
tradition, rituals, and values
(i.e. Jewish Culture)
• Excellence in services and programs
• Physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being
• Democratic decision-making
• Financial responsibility and accountability
• Life-long learning • Creativity • Partnership • Community
Special Needs
Services
The Special Needs Services Department saw
an increase in participants with our yearround
Day Program for young adults, growing
from nine to 16 participants, and our Summer
Camp Taglit growing from 25 to 36.
The Taglit Summer Program was restructured
to offer a higher level of individualization to
accommodate a wider range of disabilities,
while remaining fun.
The Summer Inclusion program accepted
35 participants, including a young man
in the “Leadership in Training” program.
Additionally, we partnered with Building
Services to create a work-internship program
for a high school student during the academic
school year.
In the day program, we were lucky to have two
respected and well-known instructors teach
weekly tango and karate classes to all of our
participants.
Special Needs Services was awarded another
five-passenger wheelchair accessible vehicle
through a grant from the Arizona Department
of Transportation.
Sports & Wellness
Our numbers, in terms of usage, continued to grow in
2011. There were 128,073 total visits with 352 members
who checked in 100 times or more. Overall, 93,531
individuals used the Fitness Center, an increase of 6%
over 2010.
Tucson proudly represented the JCCA Maccabi Games
in Israel. They joined more than 1,200 athletes for this
two-week athletic celebration where they competed in
swimming, soccer, basketball and tennis.
Fund Development
The JCC gratefully acknowledges the following individuals, companies,
organizations and foundations for their support of our many programs and
offerings. Membership dues are not enough to maintain the excellent programming
we enjoy, maintain the building we love and serve the community. Donor support
dollars bridge the gap and we thank the following people for contributing to the
success of the JCC. Gifts of $250 or more are listed below.
For the many donors who supported the JCC with
gifts below the $250 level, too numerous to include
in this report, we thank you for the support. We
apologize for any inadvertent errors or omissions.
2011 Financial Highlights
Our strong financial performance in most
programs in 2011 allowed us to transfer the
budgeted amount into the Repair & Replacement
Fund and meet other obligations. Fundraising fell
short of budget in 2011.
We were able to give a small increment in February
2011 to most of our employees, but the 401K match
has not been reinstated.
As always, we express our genuine gratitude to our
wonderful donors who help make our programs
possible and affordable to scholarship recipients.
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Endowment
Fund provided $136,561 in 2011 for scholarships.
In 2011, JCC scholarships and discounts totaled
almost $587,000.
As scholarship needs increase, it is challenging
to provide families with the assistance they need
when contributions and fundraising dollars are
limited.
For more detailed information you can request a
copy of our 2011 audited financial statements from
the JCC accounting office. A copy of our 990 is
available through the Guide Star web site, or you
can also request that we provide you with a copy.
