Vanessa Yazzie from SIPI with her present<strong>at</strong>ion, “The effect<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thinning Tre<strong>at</strong>ments on Resin Production in Southwestern<br />

Ponderosa Pine.”<br />

Tameka Walker, a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> in Huntsville<br />

(UAH) student, received a one year $26,000 Fellowship<br />

from the American Chemical Society. She completed her<br />

M.S. degree in Chemistry as BD Fellow from 2004-06, and<br />

is currently in the Biotechnology Science and Engineering<br />

Ph.D. Program <strong>at</strong> UAH.<br />

Lucy Kehinde, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Birmingham</strong><br />

(UAB) student, was the first place winner and the recipient<br />

<strong>of</strong> $1,000.00 in the Minority Access, Inc. N<strong>at</strong>ional Role<br />

Model and Student Researcher Conference. The Annual<br />

Role Models and Student Research Conference is an opportunity<br />

to focus the n<strong>at</strong>ional spotlight on institutions<br />

and individuals th<strong>at</strong> have excelled in producing and supporting<br />

minority researchers.<br />

Briana Merkerson, UAH student, <strong>at</strong>tended the N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Society <strong>of</strong> Black Engineers Fall Regional Conference in November<br />

2008. She particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the Undergradu<strong>at</strong>e Research<br />

Regional Showcase Competition, where she placed<br />

second with her research project entitled; “Applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

the Design for Six Sigma to Increase Industrial Engineering<br />

Enrollment.”<br />

Thomas Adams, UAH student, received the Motiv<strong>at</strong>ing Undergradu<strong>at</strong>es<br />

in Science and Technology (MUST) project<br />

scholarship. MUST, funded by NASA, is a joint partnership<br />

between the Hispanic College Fund, the United Negro<br />

College Fund Special Programs and the Society for Hispanic<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Engineers. The MUST program awards<br />

scholarships and internships in STEM fields.<br />

All N<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

Two students from Tribal Colleges, Salish Kootenai College<br />

(SKC) and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute<br />

(SIPI) were successful <strong>at</strong> the 2008 AISES conference. K<strong>at</strong>ie<br />

McDonald, a sophomore in the Environmental Science<br />

program <strong>at</strong> SKC, tied for second place in oral competition<br />

with her present<strong>at</strong>ion, “Mercury Concentr<strong>at</strong>ions in Osprey<br />

UC San Diego Structural Engineering majors Carolina<br />

Margarito, Jorge Ortiz, and Ruben Soto won First Place in<br />

the Fifth Annual N<strong>at</strong>ional Seismic Design Competition in<br />

New Orleans, Feb. 9, 2008. They competed with undergradu<strong>at</strong>es<br />

from 16 institutions n<strong>at</strong>ionwide. The students<br />

constructed a balsa-wood structure th<strong>at</strong> would perform<br />

well under the 1940 El Centro, the 1994 Northridge, and<br />

the 1995 Kobe Earthquake simul<strong>at</strong>ions. Also <strong>at</strong> UC San<br />

Diego, Mechanical Engineering major Eva Gabriela Baylon<br />

was selected Scholar <strong>of</strong> the Week (Spring 2008), <strong>at</strong> HE-<br />

NAAC, Hispanic Engineer N<strong>at</strong>ional Achievement Awards<br />

Conference. Baylon is also the SHPE, Society <strong>of</strong> Hispanic<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Engineers, Region<br />

2 Vice Regional Student Represent<strong>at</strong>ive.<br />

BD fellow Moses T<strong>at</strong>aw (Cohort<br />

III, UCSD), has received<br />

a five-year IGERT Fellowship<br />

through the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Computer Science. T<strong>at</strong>aw completed his first two years <strong>of</strong><br />

gradu<strong>at</strong>e study <strong>at</strong> UCSD and continues his doctoral work <strong>at</strong><br />

UC Riverside, where he is studying chemical genomics.<br />

Eight UC-Irvine Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering and<br />

Computer Science majors won $2,500 awards from the<br />

Mazda North American Found<strong>at</strong>ion in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with<br />

the N<strong>at</strong>ional Hispanic Fund. Awardees: Andrew Marquez,<br />

Jose Gallegos, Frank Jimenez, Julie Cojulun, Jorge De Paz,<br />

Aaron Botello, Nery Chapeton-Lamas and Martin Tajiboy<br />

(sophomore).<br />

Ten UC <strong>LSAMP</strong> students won awards <strong>at</strong> the Society for the<br />

Advancement <strong>of</strong> Chicanos and N<strong>at</strong>ive Americans in Science<br />

(SACNAS) 2008 n<strong>at</strong>ional conference held in Salt Lake City.<br />
