Tameka Walker, a University of Alabama in Huntsville
(UAH) student, received a one year $26,000 Fellowship
from the American Chemical Society. She completed her
M.S. degree in Chemistry as BD Fellow from 2004-06, and
is currently in the Biotechnology Science and Engineering
Ph.D. Program at UAH.
Lucy Kehinde, University of Alabama at Birmingham
(UAB) student, was the first place winner and the recipient
of $1,000.00 in the Minority Access, Inc. National Role
Model and Student Researcher Conference. The Annual
Role Models and Student Research Conference is an opportunity
to focus the national spotlight on institutions
and individuals that have excelled in producing and supporting
minority researchers.
Briana Merkerson, UAH student, attended the National
Society of Black Engineers Fall Regional Conference in November
2008. She participated in the Undergraduate Research
Regional Showcase Competition, where she placed
second with her research project entitled; “Application of
the Design for Six Sigma to Increase Industrial Engineering
Enrollment.”
Thomas Adams, UAH student, received the Motivating Undergraduates
in Science and Technology (MUST) project
scholarship. MUST, funded by NASA, is a joint partnership
between the Hispanic College Fund, the United Negro
College Fund Special Programs and the Society for Hispanic
Professional Engineers. The MUST program awards
scholarships and internships in STEM fields.
All Nations
Two students from Tribal Colleges, Salish Kootenai College
(SKC) and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute
(SIPI) were successful at the 2008 AISES conference. Katie
McDonald, a sophomore in the Environmental Science
program at SKC, tied for second place in oral competition
with her presentation, “Mercury Concentrations in Osprey

UC San Diego Structural Engineering majors Carolina
Margarito, Jorge Ortiz, and Ruben Soto won First Place in
the Fifth Annual National Seismic Design Competition in
New Orleans, Feb. 9, 2008. They competed with undergraduates
from 16 institutions nationwide. The students
constructed a balsa-wood structure that would perform
well under the 1940 El Centro, the 1994 Northridge, and
the 1995 Kobe Earthquake simulations. Also at UC San
Diego, Mechanical Engineering major Eva Gabriela Baylon
was selected Scholar of the Week (Spring 2008), at HE-
NAAC, Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards
Conference. Baylon is also the SHPE, Society of Hispanic
Professional Engineers, Region
2 Vice Regional Student Representative.
BD fellow Moses Tataw (Cohort
III, UCSD), has received
a five-year IGERT Fellowship
through the Department of
Computer Science. Tataw completed his first two years of
graduate study at UCSD and continues his doctoral work at
UC Riverside, where he is studying chemical genomics.
Eight UC-Irvine Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering and
Computer Science majors won $2,500 awards from the
Mazda North American Foundation in collaboration with
the National Hispanic Fund. Awardees: Andrew Marquez,
Jose Gallegos, Frank Jimenez, Julie Cojulun, Jorge De Paz,
Aaron Botello, Nery Chapeton-Lamas and Martin Tajiboy
(sophomore).
Ten UC LSAMP students won awards at the Society for the
Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science
(SACNAS) 2008 national conference held in Salt Lake City.
