Student News 2007-2008<br />

California St<strong>at</strong>e<br />
Emmanuel Y. Dotsey, B.S. Biological Sciences, 2007, Cal<br />
St<strong>at</strong>e LA, was a recipient <strong>of</strong> the Ford Found<strong>at</strong>ion Pre-Doctoral<br />
Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Diversity Fellowship which began his second<br />
year <strong>of</strong> Ph.D. study in molecular pharmacology <strong>at</strong> UC<br />
Irvine.<br />
Ameer Thompson, (B.S. Biological Sciences, 2005, Sacramento<br />
St<strong>at</strong>e) who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Cellular/<br />
Molecular Biology <strong>at</strong> UC Davis was awarded an NSF Gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />
Fellowship for the 2007-2008 academic year.<br />
Gabriel Rodriguez (B.S., Earth Systems Science & Policy,<br />
2008, Cal St<strong>at</strong>e Monterey Bay) received a Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Research<br />
Fellowship from the N<strong>at</strong>ional Science Found<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
to pursue his Ph.D. degree <strong>at</strong> UC Santa Barbara in the Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology.<br />
Illinois<br />
Kellen Marshall was accepted into the Leadership Conference<br />
<strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Illinois <strong>at</strong> Chicago (UIC). The<br />
forum was sponsored by the Conference <strong>of</strong> Women Legisl<strong>at</strong>ors<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Illinois General Assembly and the Institute<br />
<strong>of</strong> Government and Public Affairs <strong>at</strong> UIC on June 3 –<br />
June 8, 2008.<br />
Islands <strong>of</strong> Opportunity<br />
Makani Gregg, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hawaii <strong>at</strong> Hilo, was selected<br />
to do an oral present<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> the 2009 American Society<br />
<strong>of</strong> Limnology & Oceanography (ASLO) Conference in Nice,<br />
France.<br />
Michealene Iaukea-Lum, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hawaii, was selected<br />
to particip<strong>at</strong>e in NASA’s PIECES 2008-2009 program<br />
(includes a summer internship in 2009) <strong>at</strong> UH Hilo.<br />
Kentucky-West Virginia (KY-WV)<br />
Kentucky St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>University</strong> students Michael Somuah and<br />
Santhi Chilukuri received a third place award <strong>at</strong> the 2008<br />
KY-WV <strong>LSAMP</strong> Student Research Symposium.<br />
Mackendy Alcinvil, a junior inform<strong>at</strong>ion technology major<br />
(Kentucky St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>University</strong>) was named the 2008 GE African<br />
American Forum Scholar.<br />
Sabrina Anderson, a senior computer science major, placed<br />
third for the Mike Shinn NSBE Distinguished Member <strong>of</strong><br />
the Year Award. The award is given to student members<br />
who demonstr<strong>at</strong>e high scholastic performance and dedic<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
service to the society and other organiz<strong>at</strong>ions and<br />
possess high pr<strong>of</strong>essional promise.<br />
Louisiana (LS)<br />
Cacey Stevens, a Southern <strong>University</strong> LS-LAMP affili<strong>at</strong>e<br />
and a Timbuktu Academy Scholar, received a 2008 NSF<br />
Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Research Fellowship. Ms. Stevens began pursuing<br />
a Ph.D. in physics <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Chicago.<br />
Tiffany Brown <strong>of</strong> Chicago St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>University</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> 15<br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e recipients <strong>of</strong> the 2008 UNCF•Merck Science<br />
Initi<strong>at</strong>ive award. As an UNCF•Merck Fellow, she has<br />
received a full academic scholarship and she will spend her<br />
summers conducting research <strong>at</strong> Merck Research Labor<strong>at</strong>ories<br />
in Boston, MA. The program is supported through<br />
the Merck Institute for Science Educ<strong>at</strong>ion and Merck Research<br />
Labor<strong>at</strong>ories.<br />
Indiana<br />
Adetayo Adesanya, a sophomore in Electrical and Computer<br />
Engineering Technology <strong>at</strong> Purdue <strong>University</strong>, recently<br />
was honored with two awards for his work on a project<br />
with Purdue <strong>University</strong> assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
Jeffrey Evans. He won first place<br />
in the undergradu<strong>at</strong>e research poster<br />
competition <strong>at</strong> the 2007 <strong>LSAMP</strong>/AGEP<br />
Third Annual Joint Research Conference<br />
held <strong>at</strong> Indiana <strong>University</strong> in Bloomington,<br />
IN on November 9-10, 2007. Adesanya<br />
also won first place <strong>at</strong> the N<strong>at</strong>ional Society <strong>of</strong> Black<br />
Engineers conference in Orlando, FL in March 2008.<br />

Grambling St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>University</strong> (GSU), LS-LAMP scholar<br />
Johnte Bass presented research <strong>at</strong> the 82nd Annual Meeting<br />
<strong>of</strong> Louisiana Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences. Bass, sophomore<br />
physics major, placed second in the poster competition.<br />
In 2007-2008, BD scholar Monica Sylvain from Cohort III<br />
(our first cohort) received a Merck award in the amount <strong>of</strong><br />
$200,000 for tuition, fees, research support, etc., for the<br />
remaining few years <strong>of</strong> her Ph.D. studies in chemistry.<br />
